Individuals tend to learn about dental hygiene at an early age. On the recommendation of their children’s pediatricians, parents may begin brushing their youngsters’ teeth the moment the first tooth breaks through the gums. While proper dental hygiene is vital to oral health, it also can have a profound effect on the rest of the body. According to the Mayo Clinic, poor oral health might contribute to various diseases and conditions. Periodontitis is a severe yet preventable gum infection that can lead to tooth loss if left untreated, but the threat of periodontitis doesn’t end in the mouth. The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition

For Long Island, Inc.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring post-mastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip, and has remained open throughout the pandemic. They helped serve those in need during this pandemic by giving them food and gas gift cards, as well as assistance with living expenses. They are grateful for involvement from local businesses that have held fundrasier events for them and even donated goods to their organization. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program, where they will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a father-son social enterprise that was

Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. Town of Babylon Marks 19th Anniversary of 9/11

Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Town Board join the Town of Babylon Fire Chiefs Association to welcome other elected officials, first responders and residents to the town’s hometown 9/11 memorial to mark the 19th anniversary of the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 that claimed the lives of 48 town residents.

The hometown memorial is located at Overlook Beach, which allowed the town to hold a sociallydistanced service in light of the COVID-19 outbreak. Attendees wore face coverings for the entirety of the event. The service was also live-streamed to the town’s Facebook page for those who could not attend in-person. Supervisor Schaffer spoke about the importance

of remembering not only the victims of that terrible day, but also the brave first responders who have lost their lives to illnesses linked to their work at Ground Zero as they sifted through the rubble. The names of the 48 residents killed during the attacks were read aloud, each followed by a single bell tolling.

A Generous Donation Restoration Kitchen & Cocktails is one of many new eating establishments which recently set up shop in the Village of Lindenhurst. While their unique blend of scrumptious appetizers, entrees and libations is certainly worthy of regular visits, what truly sets Restoration apart is their commitment to community. When Billy Miller and wife Nicole decided to open a restaurant, they did so with a purpose: to restore faith in humanity, one person at a time. Toward that end, Restoration’s motto - “Be the Good You Want to See in the World” - is accomplished by donating 100% of the net profits to local charities, foundations and families in

need. After learning of the wonderful work that the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst does for children in the community, Billy and Nicole met with the club’s board and were convinced that those works and the Kiwanis motto “To Improve the World One Child and One Community at a Time” - was well-suited to Restoration’s purpose. And so in January they selected Lindenhurst Kiwanis as a recipient of their fundraising efforts. Then the world changed. After the shutdown in March due to the coronavirus, Billy, Nicole, and the entire staff at Restoration, worked tirelessly - at first offering

take-out to patrons and then by setting up tables in what was their parking lot so that diners could safely enjoy the Restoration experience. And thankfully, the community responded by supporting Restoration. As a result of and as payback for that support, on Tuesday Billy and Nicole presented the Kiwanis Club of Lindenhurst with a check for $14,262.00 that will be used for years to come to help send children to Kamp Kiwanis in upstate New York for a week of summer fun and adventure. Even in trying times such as these, it’s refreshing to know that we can still “Be the Good You Want to See in the World”.

Fall and winter are often characterized by cold, dry weather, which can make these times of year particularly challenging for people with dry or sensitive skin. The Spencer Foundation’s 1st Annual ‘Fishing for a Cause’ Raises Funds The Spencer Foundation, in partnership with KiDS NEED MORE, held its first fishing fundraiser “Fishing for a Cause,” on Saturday September 12th from 4 to 8 pm, on the Captain Eddie B III in Captree State Park in Oak Beach. Thirty-five attendees went aboard in search of fluke, enjoying catered lunch on the way. The group landed a catch of $1280 that The Spencer Foundation will use to bring fun to kids with cancer and their families. The Spencer Foundation, founded in 2016, was created to provide resources for children and their families coping with cancer. The Spencer Foundation wishes to thank all who participated, especially to the captain and crew that made it all possible. The Spencer Foundation was founded by Jean and Jeanine Spencer, who believed in always making a positive impact by their

presence. Jean and Jeanine Spencer were partners for 30 years and married in 2015. Jean was a lover of life, loving anything outdoors, including being an avid skier and a horsewoman. She loved children and was considered a big kid herself. Jean was known for her positive attitude and her smile. Jean worked for almost 40 years at UL LLC striving to make the world a safer place. She retired and became a nutritionist, studying and fascinated by homotoxicology and natural healing. She was armed with two Master Degrees and was going for her Doctorate when she was diagnosed with Stage 3 Ovarian cancer in 1995. Jean found the positive in everything, even while dealing with cancer. Being the forever optimist, she believed that by living with cancer and dealing with all its challenges, she would be better enabled to help others. She lost her long fought battle after 10 years, due to complications with not being able to make her own viable blood. But during those 10 years, she touched many lives with

her smile and profound optimism and her ability to find sunshine in any cloudy day. In early 2015 Jeanine was also diagnosed with Stage 1 Ovarian Cancer. During their cancer journey, Jean and Jeanine’s hearts ached for the children whose youth was interrupted by their illness. They saw the stress, fear and toll of the diagnosis and treatment that families endure as well as the life interrupted of these young souls. Before Jean died, they decided to create a foundation to provide resources for children and their families. By founding The Spencer Foundation in March 2016, Jeanine fulfilled Jean’s final wish.
