It’s been 15 years since I last set foot on the Edward Kienle Memorial Field as a member of the Lindenhurst Class of 2000. Fifteen years of living and learning and building a life based on the foundation set forth in the schools of good old Lindy, from the playgrounds of Daniel Street Elementary School all the way on up to the hallways of Lindenhurst High School. Each year, on Homecoming weekend, I return to the site where it all began – to reminisce, to reflect, and to soak in the autumn sun with some fellow alumni. Funny thing is, I rarely run into

anyone from my own class; mostly faculty, coaches, the occasional younger sibling of someone I went to school with… I suppose the novelty wears off after the first year or two, certainly once college has been completed and “real” life begins. But for me, it is and always will be, home. The field, the bleachers, the school… the crisp fall air that signals the start of football season, Homecoming floats parading down the street and the scent of concession stand goodies wafting through the air. Lindy pride on display in all its green and white glory, indeed. Sure, there is college Homecoming and all the

festivities that come along with it as well – but the connection is not nearly as strong as the one forged in the district I called home for 13 years, 13 formative years of discovering my passions in life and gaining the confidence to pursue them. Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog, as they say in Lindy. And so I will continue to sit on those bleachers and smile, and remember all the good times. I will cheer on the home team, no matter if I recognize the faces, and find comfort in the unique bond that we all share. I will reflect upon those friendships forged and those many special moments enjoyed through the years. Go Bulldogs!

The auditorium at Amityville Memorial High School was full of energy on September 15th, as the school kicked off Hispanic Heritage Month with flair. The entire student body gathered to celebrate Spanish culture through song, dance and video presentations. The Hispanic Heritage Club performed a flag dance, paying tribute to the many nations with significant Latino

populations. A video featured famous Hispanics in history, including politicians, scientists and entertainers. Drawing the biggest ovation from students was a performance by singer Raffi, who highlighted different types of Spanish music such as salsa and tango, while accompanied by student dancers. Hispanic Heritage Month, which runs from Sept. 15 through Oct. 15, will be celebrated during assembly programs at other schools throughout the Amityville Union Free School District. At the high school, there will also be class discussions about different Hispanics who have made significant contributions in the United States.

Amityville Memorial High School students joined together on September 21st to celebrate the 2016 International Day of Peace, supporting the cause by forming a human peace sign on the school’s front lawn. Partnering with organizations Peace One Day and Pinwheels for Peace, students from art classes, the National Art Honor Society and the Warriors Awareness Program, also known as the Wac Pac, took part in a 45-minute ceremony on a sunny morning. It was the seventh year that Amityville has participated in the international movement. The program featured song and poetry performances by students, who also shared quotes about peace from historical figures. The Wac Pac presented five peace

Brittney Walsh Memorial Bowling Fundraiser The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is holding its 4th annual Bowling Fundraiser at Farmindale Lanes in Farmingdale on October 22nd. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund is a non-profit organization established to honor the memory of Brittney Walsh. On June 24th, 2012, just two days after Brittney’s high school graduation, she was killed by a drunk driver. This tragic incident has left her family and friends in a great deal of pain. Long Islanders as a whole who have viewed the facts of this horrible event on television and through the newspapers have expressed their grief, shock and sympathy. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund has been designed to assist children just like Brittney - young people who excel in academics, push

themselves to give 100% in sports and are active in school clubs. The goal is to provide three high school seniors each year with scholorships to help make their futures a little brighter. What Are Your Going To Do With The Ashes

One of the growing problems with cremation is what to do with the cremated remains (ashes) after the cremation has taken place. The Catholic Church simply states that the cremated remains of the person should be treated the same as the body. Ashes should be placed in an urn and interred in a family cemetery plot or placed in an above ground niche. Each cemetery has its own set of rules regarding cremated remains. One will say that the cremated remains constitute the equivalent of a body. Thus interring ashes in some cemeteries are equivalent in interring a casket. Some cemeteries allow three interments of ashes in each gravesite. Some cemeteries insist on an urn or cement urn vault for cremated remains. Cemeteries in this area have very liberal rules concerning the interment of cremated remains. Each cemetery has a different set of rules and you should check with your cemetery regarding their rules and regulations. The Westhampton Presbyterian Church has a memorial garden where cremated remains can be interred and name of the deceased can be placed on the monument in the garden. St. Mark’s Episcopal Church has above ground niches behind the church also in a memorial garden. Calverton National Cemetery provides above ground niches for ashes. Long Island National Cemetery uses small graves which are too near a tree or road to inter a full size casket for interring ashes. Providing both parties agree to be cremated. If only the husband wants to be cremated and the wife does not, then the ashes are interred in a full size grave so that the wife can be buried at a later date. Many people opt to have their ashes spread in the ocean. The law is that the ashes must be spread at a distance of three miles from the shoreline. The reality is, there are more ashes on shorelines than there are in any cemetery. Some people like to keep their loved ones ashes home with them. There is special jewelry that has been designed so that some of the ashes can be kept in a pendant or key chain or in a ring so that they are always near. Funeral homes are only required to hold ashes for two years. After that time and after proper notification funeral homes are allowed to inter the ashes in marked graves. However, I have had people come back to me after 20 years and say that mom has passed and now they need dads ashes so they can be buried together. My reason for writing this column is to make you aware of the fact that something has to be done with the ashes after the cremation takes place.
