Paul Duguay, a teacher in the Amityville Union Free School District for more than a decade, has been named assistant principal of Edmund W. Miles Middle School. He joins the administrative
team of Principal Edward Plaia and fellow Assistant Principal Earl Mitchell. Mr. Duguay, a Merrick resident, was a social studies teacher at Amityville Memorial High School for three years and at the middle school for eight years. He was the middle school’s social studies department chairman in the 201718 school year, and has also coached the varsity girls track team and the middle school baseball team. His responsibilities as assistant principal will include master schedule
educational leadership from the College of Saint Rose. Additionally, she obtained a Master of Social Work degree from Adelphi University, a Master of Science degree in school counseling from Long Island University and a Master of Science degree in secondary education from Dowling College. The Most Interesting Person in the Room Who you were, who you are, and who you will be are three different people.” - Unknown In my early twenties I transitioned from self-avowed tomboy to ultra-feminine girly girl, seemingly overnight, thanks to nature taking its course and queuing in to the fact that my appearance brought me attention. My visage not only brought compliments, but also some much-needed pocket money, both during and after college, when I found work as a model. I can even recall on one occasion, literally stopping traffic. No, I’m not kidding. A gentleman stopped his car in the middle of a busy street in Brooklyn to attempt to flirt with me as I was crossing the bustling thoroughfare, bringing the traffic behind him to a midafternoon crawl. That was twentythree years ago. I was twenty-one years old. When I look back on those years that seem like a lifetime ago, the shell may have been spectacular, but inside, I’m afraid, things were not. Had you asked me who I was back then, I likely would have
struggled to answer. Had you asked if I could write, I would have shrugged my shoulders and given you an “I dunno” glance. Younger women in our culture are often conditioned to believe that our value lies in youth and beauty. It’s an unfortunate societal ill that keeps so many young women from developing a richness of character, a boldness of spirit, and from nurturing our most precious abilities. Shortly after turning thirty, I conducted one of my first interviews as an entertainment journalist, with The View co-host, Joy Behar. Here I was, thinking I was a mature adult, when Joy said to me, “You know, your thirties is a great time to be honest with yourself so that your forties can be wonderful.” I realized that, to her, I was but a child. I was perplexed by her statement then, but I understand it now. It was in my thirties that I began to write professionally, I began to delve into reading, and I read everything I could get my hands on. I started keeping a journal, and I set about the business of getting to know myself, because
I had been a virtual stranger to myself in my twenties. It was also in my thirties that I got married, had my son, lost my grandparents, got divorced, and had to pick myself up and dust myself off. Life happened, and it stripped away the varnish and revealed character, humor, creativity, compassion and depth. In my twenties I gleaned satisfaction from being considered the hottest person in the room. In my mid-thirties, I began to experience a feeling of insecurity at the realization that I will never be twenty-one again and will most likely never be the hottest one in the room. Now, when I enter a room, I am aware that my skin is not quite as flawless, my waist not quite as tiny, and I have a few wrinkles under my belt; not to mention my broken nose (Long story! It involves a six-year old, a Shih Tzu and a toy). But if you were to ask me how I feel now, my feeling is that I would much rather be the most interesting person in the room.

Reclaimed timber A house sided with clapboard, or a log cabin-inspired look, is iconic. These types of siding are typically made from insect-repellant pine, cedar, cypress, or redwood. While lumber certified by the Forest Stewardship Council is environmentally friendly, homeowners may want to seek out reclaimed lumber. This wood has history and causes very little environmental impact. Plus, timber salvaged from old buildings or fallen trees may be superior to new wood because it likely came from slow-growing, old trees with dense grain. Brick Avoid any negative environmental impact by choosing locally produced or reclaimed bricks — or those made from postconsumer content. The longevity of bricks can often offset the energy expenditure in their manufacture. Plus, many bricks are
made from natural clay, which can be an excellent insulator. Stucco HouseLogic says traditional stucco is made from sand and Portland cement mixed with water to make a usable plaster. It’s tough and durable — often lasting the life of the house. Eco-friendly variants include stucco made with an earth-and-lime mixture, offsetting the CO2 emissions associated with cement production. Stucco can reduce air infiltration that causes drafts in a home. Fiber-cement Fiber-cement is similar to stucco in that it is made from sand, Portland cement, clay, and wood pulp fibers. It can be fire-resistant and insect-proof and will not rot. It’s a stable material that can recover
almost 80 percent of the initial cost, according to the National Association of Realtors®. Stone This nonrenewable resource can be beautiful on a home and durable, but mining it can impact the environment. If homeowners can use reclaimed or displaced stone, those are more sustainable options. Manufactured stone, which is cement and other materials molded to look like stone, is also aesthetically appealing and more ecofriendly. Replacing siding is a significant undertaking. Homeowners can consider sustainability when selecting replacement siding materials.

When we lived in much simpler times, the immediate family decided who controlled the funeral service. The order of who controlled the funeral was the following: First and foremost it was the spouse who decided on the method of final disposition, cremation, burial, church service, etc. If there was no spouse, it was the children over 18 of the deceased who decided and usually they agreed with each other, if the individual was not married the parents made the decisions, if no parents the brothers and sisters and last on the list were aunts, uncles or cousins. If there weren’t any living relatives or executors of the will, the Public Administrator made the decision. The Law has changed. NYS Public Health Law 4201(2) provides for the designation in a written instrument of a person who shall control the disposition of the remains of a deceased person. A person who has married for second time can appoint his or her children as agents for their funeral. If it is your intent to have someone other than your immediate next of kin to have control of your final disposition or if you want a specific child, parent or sibling to be in absolute control of your funeral - speak to an attorney and fi ll out the necessary paperwork.
