Planning For Tomorrow

of eight runners each traversing a 50-mile scenic course stretching from the South Shore to the North Shore of Long Island. This will be the fourth consecutive year Bethpage has sponsored the event. Nearly 1,000 runners are expected to participate in the relay, which will benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. Dedicated to funding blood cancer research, education and patient services, money raised from the relay will go directly to support the organization’s Long Island Chapter. Long Island runner Alan End, who founded the relay back in 1985, is the relay director. According to Greater Long Island Running Club President Mike Polansky, “The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay is an exciting race for both runners and spectators. We invite you to come down and cheer on your family, friends and neighbors sprinting across Long Island.” The Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay starts at Jones Beach State Park and finishes on the grounds of the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park in Oyster Bay. 120 eight-person teams will navigate their way through 15 different Long Island townships starting in Wantagh, traveling through Seaford, Massapequa Park, Massapequa, Farmingdale, Old Bethpage, Plainview, Woodbury, West Hills, crossing into Huntington and hitting the Long Island Sound in Lloyd Harbor, returning to Nassau County via Cold Spring Harbor and Syosset, reaching Oyster Bay Cove, and finally hitting Oyster Bay. “The Ocean to Sound Relay is one of the most unique and anticipated events of every year, attracting runners from the entire tri-state area,” said Linda Armyn, Senior Vice President, Bethpage. “We’re happy to participate again, and witness some

amazing athletic abilities, organized impeccably by the Greater Long Island Running Club, and all for a deserving cause.” There are 15 different categories for runners including men’s, women’s, mixed open, men’s masters, women’s masters, mixed masters, men’s seniors masters, women’s seniors masters, men’s super seniors, women’s super seniors, corporate, law enforcement/firefighter, physically challenged, one person team, and running for Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. A gala post race party affectionately called the “Best Post-Race Party in the Northeast” will take place immediately following the relay at the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park on the shoreline of beautiful Oyster Bay Harbor near the finish line, where awards will be presented in each of the individual categories to each member of the top three teams in each category. “The Leukemia & Lymphoma Society (LLS) is extremely grateful for the generous support of the Greater Long Island Running Club and Bethpage Federal Credit Union,” said Sara Lipsky, Executive Director of the Long Island Chapter. “It is because of organizations like them, LLS can continue to fulfill its mission - to find cures for leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin’s disease and myeloma and improve the quality of life for patients and their families.” The entry fee for the Bethpage Ocean to Sound Relay is $400 per team ($50 per runner) through September 16th, 2013, which covers entry into the race, a special commemorative t-shirt for each runner, and entry into the postrace party. Fading Fast By: Jamie Lynn Ryan It’s official. Autumn has arrived, and with it, quickly fading are those last golden rays of summer sunshine, any lingering tan lines, the prospect of wearing flip flops and short sleeves … and, as of this printing, the Yankees’ playoff hopes. Just like that. What a difference one week can make, right? I know, I know … get over it. Seasons come and go, weather changes and we all had just better get used to it – and quickly. Each month brings with it its own unique excitement, and there are those who far prefer the

winter cold to any number of days spent lounging on the beach. (I would not be one of them, in case you couldn’t tell.) But here we are, at any rate, on the verge of October, with the holiday season lurking right over the horizon. Tis’ the season for Oktoberfest and Fall Festivals, high school and college Homecoming parades and games, pumpkin picking and Halloween costume parties. Before you know it, we’ll be making our shopping lists for Black Friday. And, just like that, summer will be a distant memory.

So time to dig out the fall sweaters, store the bathing suits away for another season, and embrace the crunch of the leaves beneath your boots. School is back, football is gearing up and the new fall TV season is in full premiere mode. Doesn’t sound so bad after all, does it? Not bad at all... QUESTION: How prevalent is oral cancer? ANSWER: Oral cancer will attack 25,000 people this year. Nine thousand will die, needlessly, from cancer of the mouth, lips and/or tongue. Needlessly, that is, because all of these areas are easily accessible to visual examination. Each time you come in for an exam, we’ll check you for possible symptoms. Sometimes, our examination of a suspicious area will lead to a conclusion that it is nothing more serious than an irritated patch of tissue. We may take a sample of this tissue for microscopic examination, or refer you to an oral surgeon. Signs of oral cancer include: Lumps in the mouth, jaws, or neck; white patches; red spots; or difficulty in swallowing. White patches are significant warnings that cancer may soon develop. While it may be impossible to entirely prevent oral cancer, regular exams can help detect it early when treatment will be effective.

Legislator Lou D’Amaro is alerting local residents about the Suffolk County Office for the Aging’s Fall 2013 Senior Advocate Schedule. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out to the local community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies. “Nobody should ever have to go without food, medical attention or other necessities, which is why our senior advocates literally bring these vital programs and services directly to our seniors in their own communities,” D’Amaro said. You could hear squeals of joy and terror, from children and their parents alike when Jungle Bob of Jungle Bob’s Reptile World took the ring with many of his reptilian friends his Live Animal educational show. On Saturday there was also a fashion show held by Corky’s International Haute Couture Canine, and on Sunday a ‘Parade of Breeds’ which included dogs breeds such as: Chinese Crested, Beauceron; Leonberger; Shiba Inu; Skye Terrier; Old English Sheepdog to name a few. “We had a fantastic turnout this year and were thrilled to see so many people attend with their children and their pets. Many aspects of the Pet Expo in the Park are an educational and hands on

experience for children to learn about many different animals, and meet all kinds of pets. We love that the Long Island Family Festival has invited us back year after year, and that the event has grown in popularity,” said Karen Garetano of the Long Island Pet Expo. In addition to the pet talent and entertainment in the main ring, there was a petting zoo, many pet vendors, and adoptable pets available through area rescue and adoption agencies that participated throughout the weekend. This past weekend on Saturday, September 14th and Sunday, September 15th, over 3,000 pet owners attended the 6th Annual Long Island Pet Expo In The Park that was held in conjunction with the Long Island Family Festival, hosted by the Copiague Chamber of Commerce, at Tanner Park in Copiague. New legislation requires ALL homeowners receiving a Basic STAR exemption to register with the New York State Tax Department THIS year in order to continue receiving the exemption in 2014 and subsequent years. This is part of a new initiative to protect tax dollars from being lost to fraud. The New York State Department of Taxation & Finance will be mailing instructions to Long Island homeowners who currently receive the Basic STAR exemption between September 16 and October 4 on how to register, along with a STAR code that they will need to register.
