Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District has a special connection with the military. For the past year, students have been sending items to a Joint Task Force of members of the Army, Navy, Marines and Air Force. On September 9th, the favor was returned in a big way. Naval Petty Officer First Class Josh Candon visited the school and presented a folded American flag that had flown during several of Task Force’s overseas missions, along with a certificate. It was to thank Northeast for an effort spearheaded by Maria Lievano, who teaches the bilingual kindergarten class, in which students sent hot chocolate, Girl Scout cookies, candy, cards, artwork and pictures to the troops. The Task Force also sent some

pictures from its missions in Afghanistan and Africa, along with carved wooden animals, all of which are on display in the school’s lobby. Kindergarten students, dressed in red, white and blue, saluted and then applauded as Petty Officer Candon entered the gymnasium for a small assembly. After reciting the Pledge of Allegiance and singing “My County, ‘Tis of Thee,” Principal Dr. Pauline Collins spoke to students about the role that the military plays in the United States. “We’re teaching them about patriotism and to honor our troops,” Dr. Collins said, noting that a few kindergartners have parents serving in the military. “We try to educate kids about the global community. They’re not too young to learn that there’s a bigger world outside their home

and school.” Petty Officer Candon’s visit coincided with Patriot Day. That afternoon, to commemorate the 15th anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks, students placed small American flags in front of the school.

It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Gone is the time when having a new “best friend” every year of elementary school was the norm, replaced instead by a handful of fairly close friends and an infinite number of what can only be classified as acquaintances; those you may travel in similar circles with but, once the circle is broken, severed is the superficial connection forged as well. Even among those close friends, there are breakdowns. There are those who you may only see sporadically to grab dinner or catch a movie with, yet when you do get together, it’s like no time has elapsed at all. Then there are the friends you embark on daylong

adventures with, aimlessly wandering the streets of New York City, the beaches of Long Island and everything in between. These are the days of memories made, of endless photographs snapped… the days you will fondly recall years from now, and smile. I recently came across a quote: “Photographs are proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.” Not only does it speak to my personal love of photography as a whole, but to that notion of reflecting upon moments and savoring them. Sure, it is equally important to be present in the moment and experience it fully; but pictures have the ability to preserve an instant in a way that memory alone cannot always fulfill. Hence, my albums full of fun and silliness, of candid

moments and scenic shores. Of friends, both the lifelong variety and those who may only make a guest appearance along the way. And of course, Buddy, my very special finned friend, who holds a unique place in my heart the way that only a pet can. He may be contained in a bowl, but his personality shines through, and the connection is just as real as those established with friends of the “Human” variety. Month after month, I celebrate his “birthday,” the anniversary of his time in my home, along with the standard holidays that we have been fortunate to share with him. Friends may come and go, and the memories may fade over time; but in the many heartbeats in between, perfection can be found. You need only know where to look.
