On September 22nd, the Hemendinger family of Amity Harbor, will walk as a family, step by step, to the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro in Tanzania, Africa. that sounds, that is the reality of being parents or a family member of someone with an eating disorder. Suffering with an eating disorder is like being engulfed into a smothering darkness. It is a tug of war between hiding in the shadows and being isolated by the illness, while loved ones try to pull you back to life. The only way out of the deep, dark hole is to battle through and climb up to recovery. One step at a time. The family’s hope is to help those suffering with eating disorders by raising money for research in prevention and evidence-based treatments. Their goal is to raise $19,341, which is one dollar for every step they take above sea level towards the summit of Mt. Kilimanjaro (19,341ft). The contributions

will go directly to the National Eating Disorders Association’s Feeding Hope Fund for Clinical Research, which provides grants to top-level researchers in the eating disorders ﬁeld.

Stufﬁng the Bus United Way’s StuffA-Bus pulled up to Copiague School District’s administrative building packed with boxes of school supplies for the students of Copiague on September 11th. More than 75 boxes were ﬁlled with supplies including backpacks, pens and pencils, notebooks, lunch boxes, rulers, scissors, glue and more. United Way’s Stuff-A-Bus campaign, now in its ninth year, collects donations and also has support from corporate partners. Members of the Copiague Middle School Builders Club, the junior version of the Key Club, were on hand to help unload the boxes when Educational Bus Transportation delivered the packed boxes. The Builders Club, along with adviser Maria Ostrofsky, will help unpack and sort the boxes to be delivered to the different schools in the next week.

“Necessity never made a good bargain.” - Benjamin Franklin For over 25 years we have advocated if at all possible that people make funeral arrangements in advance of their need. Making funeral arrangements at the time of need is one of the most difficult things you will ever have to do. You have a limited time to make emotional decisions, economic decisions, and personal decisions that may effect you and your family well into the future. “Necessity”, or limited time to make decisions as Ben Franklin says, never made for a good bargain - meaning that you make economic decisions that will cost more than it would if you had more time to contemplate the cost of a funeral including cemetery, cremation, caskets, etc. This saying may well refer to emotional decisions as well as personal decisions. Making emotional decisions under undue stress and strain may skew your thinking thus offending someone unintentionally or making the funeral unnecessarily difficult for you and your family because of interference from someone outside your immediate family. In legal terms, if someone else forces you to make a decision such as this, it is called duress and the decision can be rendered null and void. If you make such a decision on your own, unfortunately, you will have to live with it. Pre-need funeral arrangements allow individuals and families to examine their options, and the opportunity to discuss with each other the type of funeral they want for each other. Although you can pay for a funeral in advance if you desire, you do not need to pay to have the type of funeral you wish on record. Simply give us a call and we can discuss your options over the phone or you and members of your family can come into the funeral home and we will gladly explain all your options. We can show you caskets and discuss costs with you so that you will be prepared. Our funeral directors are always prepared to help you. You need to be prepared to deal with funeral directors. Take our word for it - it is better to deal with them in advance before the “Necessity” than it is to deal with them under emotional and personal strain.

And with that, summer’s ﬁnal swan song is upon us, as the autumnal air seems to have taken up residence across this long island that we call home. Some will say the summer months ﬂew by in the blink of an eye; others will say they dragged on unbearably. How drastic are the differences in perception from one person to another. It’s funny how things seem to move in fast forward once the school year gets underway. Halloween decorations have been out in full force for weeks, with Christmas not far behind. That spring cleaning that we’ve been putting off until fall is now begging for our attention. As the leaves begin to turn, can outdoor cleanups be far behind as well? In the entertainment world, gone are the evenings of summer concerts under the stars, replaced instead by nights spent in front of

the television as many of our favorite shows return from hiatus. That baseball season which once seemed endless on opening day in April is now nearing its ﬁnal stretch, as playoff pictures begin to take shape. All this, while football season takes over, and each Sunday’s activities become dictated by the game schedule of your favorite team. Soon enough, all roads heading eastward will be jammed with trafﬁc as the masses scramble to take advantage of each beautiful autumn weekend. Pumpkin picking, apple picking, hayrides, corn mazes… so much to accomplish in so little time. And yet, there is always precisely the same amount of time. It’s all in how we choose to use it. A good family friend of mine recently commented that we all tend to live as though we have this list of obligations

to complete, rather than taking a step back and simply experiencing each moment as it happens. There is very little we actually have to do; in fact, almost nothing is required within a particular time frame. And so, we can afford to relax a bit, to take our time transitioning, whether it is from one season to the next or something larger and more signiﬁcant to our personal lives. So, while the calendar may indicate autumn just a few days from now, that doesn’t mean we need to give up enjoying the warmth of the sun, or throw away our remaining summer plants in favor of mums and pumpkins. All in good time. Autumn is a season of transition in itself, a cross-section of weather and activities, even fashion. A season of plenty. Plenty to appreciate. Plenty to embrace. Plenty to enjoy.
