positive. Researchers found that tiny pieces of mulched leaves eventually sifted down through the turf and provided the lawn with essential nutrients. Mulched leaves also served to control future weed growth by covering up bare spots between turf plants. Such spots typically provided openings for weed seeds to germinate and ultimately infect lawns. In fact, researchers found that

mulching leaves for just three years could produce a nearly 100 percent decrease in dandelion and crabgrass growth. Homeowners with mulching mowers that also have bags can even help their gardens by alternating using the mower with and without the bag on once leaves begin to fall. When mowing with the bag on, mulched leaves can then be used as mulch in landscape beds and vegetable gardens.

The West Islip Breast Cancer Coalition for Long Island, Inc. (WIBCC) is a non-profit grassroots organization that was founded in 1992. They work to eradicate Breast Cancer and gynecological cancers. Their mission is to provide support services to women undergoing treatment and requiring postmastectomy care with their “Lead A Helping Hand” program, and to actively promote cancer and environmental awareness with education, advocacy and outreach throughout the community.

WIBCC has remained open throughout the pandemic and are truly here to serve our community. This coalition serves all of Long Island, not just West Islip. As like many other non-profit organizations, WIBCC holds various fundraising events throughout the year to gain awareness and collect funds in support of their mission. This September they are part of Stop & Shop’s Community Bag Program. WIBCC will receive a $1 donation every time a $2.50 reusable Community Bag is purchased at 400 Union Blvd in West Islip, unless otherwise directed by the customer through the Giving Tag attached to the bag. Additionally, they are participating in John’s Crazy Socks Giving Back Program, which started September 1st and will run through October 31st. John’s Crazy Socks is a fatherson social enterprise that was inspired by John Lee Cronin, a young man with Down Syndrome and his love of colorful and fun socks, or what he calls his “crazy socks”. John’s Crazy Socks has agreed to donate 10% of their net sales to WIBCC for every pair of socks purchased from their website, www. johnscrazysocks.com, when you enter the

Next month they will present Pink Flags of October, a month-long event to honor and remember those affected by Breast Cancer. Hundreds of pink flags will be placed at the entrance of Good Samaritan Hospital. You have the opportunity to purchase a ribbon in honor of or in memory of someone whose life has been affected by Breast Cancer. These ribbons will be tied to the flags and together the flags and ribbons will fly for the entire month of October. On Sunday, September 27 from 12-2PM at The Cancer Institute (111 Beach Drive in West Islip), there will be a ceremony to celebrate this month-long event, which will include health information, light refreshments and more. If you purchase a ribbon, you can attend the event and place the name of whom it is in honor of or in memory of right on the ribbon itself. If you cannot attend, it will be placed for you. If you would simply like to make a donation directly to this coalition, you can securely do so online at www.wibcc.org. Sometimes we forget the really important things in life. Last week, I took my grandchildren to a restaurant. My six-year-old asked if he could say grace. As we bowed our heads he said, “God is good, God is great. Thank you for the food, and I would even thank you more if Nana gets us ice cream for dessert. And liberty and justice for all! Amen!” Along with the laughter from the other customers nearby, I heard a woman remark, “That’s what’s wrong with this country. Kids today don’t even know how to pray. Asking God for ice cream! Why, I never!” Hearing this, my grandson burst into tears and asked me, “Did I do it wrong? Is God mad at me?” As I held him and assured him that he had done a terrific job, and God was certainly not mad at him, an elderly gentleman approached the table. He winked at my grandson and said, “I happen to know that God thought that was a great prayer.” “Really?” my grandson asked. “Cross my heart,” the man replied. Then, in a theatrical whisper, he added (indicating the woman whose remark had started this whole thing), “Too bad she never asks God for ice cream. A little ice cream is good for the soul sometimes.” Naturally, I bought my grandchildren ice cream at the end of the meal. My grandson stared at his for moment, and then did something I will remember the rest of my life. He picked up his sundae and, without a word, walked over and placed it in front of the woman. Rosh Hashanah is an important holiday on the Jewish calendar. According to the Jewish National Fund, Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish New Year and is a celebration of the anniversary of the creation of Adam and Eve. Adherents to the Jewish faith wish each other a good, sweet year ahead on Rosh Hashanah, a day that is steeped in tradition. One such tradition is the sounding of the shofar, which the JNF notes is representative of the trumpet blast that sounded the coronation of kings. The sounding of the shofar also symbolizes a call to repentance. The shofar itself is a ram’s horn that calls to mind the story of the Blinding of Isaac, an event that occurred on Rosh Hashanah and involved a ram taking Isaac’s place as an offering to God. Of course, no celebration of Rosh Hashanah, which takes place over two days, is complete without a festive meal. Foods served during Rosh Hashanah celebrations tend to be sweet and are meant to symbolize hopes for an enjoyable year ahead. In addition, the JNF says it is customary on Rosh Hashanah to eat foods with names that allude to blessing and prosperity. In 2020, Rosh Hashanah begins on the evening of Friday, September 18 and ends on the evening of Sunday, September 20.

Fall is a great time to tackle projects around the house. The weather each fall allows homeowners to make improvements to their homes’ exteriors without worrying about extreme heat or cold, while interior projects like painting are made easier because homeowners can open the windows to allow for proper ventilation. Fall also marks a great time to prepare for upcoming projects that can make winter work that much easier. For example, fall is a great time to take stock of your gutters so you can address any issues before leaves begin to fall or the first snowstorm touches down. Compromised gutters can contribute to water issues in basements and adversely affect a home’s foundation if not addressed immediately, so it behooves homeowners to learn the signs that gutters are in need of repair or replacement. • Gutters hanging off the home: Gutters were once installed predominantly with spikes. However, many industry professionals now install gutters with hanger brackets. Why the change? Spikes loosen over time, leading to the gutters hanging off the home. That can contribute to serious issues if left untreated. Gutters hanging off the home need not necessarily be replaced, but rather secured to the home, ideally with hanger brackets instead of spikes. These appliances are particularly coveted in the cooler months when people spend more time indoors. Maintenance is necessary in order for fireplaces and stoves to function safely, and that upkeep must include paying close attention to the functionality of the chimney. Chimneys are designed to last for decades. Cracks and spalling in brick chimneys are common concerns that can cause significant damage if left unchecked. Chimney maintenance involves more than cleaning the flue. Rather than running the risk of costly repairs, which can cost several thousand dollars, homeowners can take some simple steps to keep their chimneys in tip-top shape. Certain components of chimney maintenance are doit-yourself tasks, while others may be better left to the professionals. • Start from the inside and ensure that dampers are working properly. When using fireplaces and other appliances, dampers need to be open to allow smoke to vent outside; otherwise, smoke will be trapped in the home and could lead to carbon monoxide buildup. Dampers need to be fixed or replaced if they are not operational. Replacement fireplace dampers should be snug and not have any gaps, states Vertical Chimney Care. • Conduct a visual inspection of the chimney to check for any cracks or spalling. Obituary Jeremiah F. Anglim, longtime resident of Amityville, died September 2, 2020 at the home of his son in Massapequa. He was 88 years old. Jerry was born January 13, 1932 in Brooklyn to Francis Aloysius and Anne Elizabeth (Mehegan) Anglim. Mr. Anglim joined the United States Marine Corps in February 1952, later transferring to Reserves and subsequently retiring as a Captain. Jerry joined the ranks of the NY Police Department in 1956, served until 1977 when he retired. He was a 53 year member of the Massapequa Fire Department, an ex-

captain of Engine Co. #4. He was predeceased by his wife Ann in June 2017 and also his sons Frank and Paul. Survivors include his children Kristine Cantrell, Celeste Kusmierski (Walter), Nancy Burnham (Joel), Peter Anglim (Diane); seventeen (17) grandchildren, twenty-one (21) great grandchildren and two (2) great great grandchildren, and a sister Francis Franzo. He was also predeceased by four (4) brothers and three (3) sisters. Deacon Rich Ferri conducted a prayer service on the evening of Tuesday, September 8th. Father Gerard Gordon,

pastor St. Martin of Tours R.C. Church celebrated a Mass of Christian Burial at St. Martin’s assisted by the Consolation Ministry and members of the family. Interment followed with military honors in St. Charles Cemetery. Fire Dept. conducted Last Alarm and members of both the Fired Dept. and NYPD acted as escorts and honor guard. Donations in memory of Jerry may be made to St. Martin of Tours Parish Outreach. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

National Assisted Living Week highlights the incredible care provided by caregivers in assisted living facilities. It is a way to celebrate the dedication of staff, the individuality of residents, and the deep connections formed in these settings.” While adhering to safety requirements and precautions in place for COVID, activities that were offered at Dominican Village included: Happy Hour & Pizza party at each resident’s apartment doorway and additional activities pertaining to the theme of the day. To celebrate diversity each day of the week there was a different ethnic themed meal prepared by experienced chefs. The week ended with a Classic Car Parade giving the resident’s the opportunity to reminisce about the good ole days and their classic cars.

NEW YEAR, NEW SPACE AT NORTHWEST ELEMENTARY - As the finishing touches were put on the new wing at Northwest Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District, kindergarten teacher Mackenzie Reddin spent some time setting up her classroom in anticipation of the first day of school on Sept. 10. All seven kindergarten classrooms in the wing have different combinations of blue, green and yellow paint, floor tiles and furniture. The construction is one of the final pieces of the voter-approved bond referendum from March 2016, and Northwest’s new space also includes a gymnasium and several small instruction rooms.
