early 3,200 students filled the hallways and classrooms of Amityville’s five schools on September 6th, marking the start of the 2016-2017 school year. As students arrived on foot and by bus, they sported new backpacks and toted bags filled with school supplies. The Long Island Junior Soccer League (LIJSL) is one of the world’s largest soccer leagues, and the largest league in the Eastern New York Youth Soccer Association (ENYYSA), with 1,600 travel teams - equally divided between boys and girls - in Suffolk, Nassau and Queens. In 1965, Pat Ryder became President of the Long Island Soccer Football League (LISFL) and he made a concerted effort to have adult league teams assist in the development of youth soccer. Although some LISFL clubs responded, it was not until Jack Maher of the Deer Park Celtics wrote to Ryder to request the formal formation of the LIJSL that the ball really started rolling. Buddy here, checking in on behalf of my Human, who has just returned from one of those “vacation” outings I detest so much. You would think, after over 18 months of residence, I would have earned the right to tag along on a trip; but alas, Buddy the Betta was abandoned yet again, left to my own devices. Don’t get me wrong, the solitude is nice on occasion. No Human faces pressed up against the glass making fishy faces, no incessant tapping on the counter to get my attention, no bath times to contend with… but eventually, a fish does become lonely. Every morning, I would wake from my slumber expecting to be greeted with the usual love and adoration – and breakfast, of course. But nothing. Days passed, and all I found was a measly dissolving chalk-like thing with ﬂakes embedded in it. At first, I thought it was a pillow; but eventually, I realized this was the best option on the menu for me for the time being. Speaking of bizarre sleeping

choices, it seems that every time my Human overhauls the tank to clean my gravel and my beloved plant, she never puts things quite back where she found them. Gone are my cozy nooks to snuggle in; replaced instead by mounds of pebbles. This has forced me to explore other options, among them, the top of the filter, where one strong current can send me sailing to a spot of rest just below the water line. Comfy indeed. Of course, when my Human forgets to replenish my water from time to time, I find myself hanging off the side, seemingly in a state of unrest. But not to worry, I can sleep just about anywhere, in any position. That includes laying on a leaf, wrapped around the filter tube, or just about vertical, face pressed against the gravel. Just turn my light off and “Do Not Disturb” – a fish needs his beauty rest, especially one as lovely as me. The last time I had nestled in for the night – or morning, as it were – I was rudely awakened by calls of “bath time for Buddy!”

To this day, after every LIJSL regular season game, the match referee grades teams based on cooperation of players, coaches and fans, overall game conduct and player appearance. The team in each division with the most points at the end of the Spring and Fall Seasons receives the highly-regarded LIJSL Sportsmanship Award and their players proudly wear a LIJSL Sportsmanship patch on their shirt as a symbol of this achievement. The first high school all-star competition, the Exceptional Senior Games, was started by the LIJSL in 1981. The games continue every November on Long Island although the LIJSL has passed the torch to organizing the competition to the high school associations in Suffolk and Nassau counties. In 1983, the LIJSL Convention started and it attracts 10,000 soccer fans every March to the Huntington Hilton. The convention, high school all-star competition, sportsmanship program and TOPSoccer Program have since been copied by other leagues across the country and even outside the United States. Imitation being the sincerest form of ﬂattery! For his 27 years volunteering as LIJSL President, Peter Collins was inducted into the US Soccer Hall of Fame in 1998. Collins and Amoroso, who died this past May, also received the Life Member Award from US Soccer, the organization’s version of the Lifetime Achievement Award. On the player development front, seven LIJSL teams have won the national championship: Girls-Under-16 Sachem Tomahawks, Girls-

Staff Readies for School To kick off the 20162017 school year, Copiague School District’s administrators, board of education members, teachers and staff gathered prior to opening day for Superintendent’s Conference Day on September 1st. After reconnecting during a welcome back breakfast in Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School’s library, the staff gathered in the high school’s auditorium for presentations from district administrators and board of education members. Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon welcomed everyone and noted the district’s Regents graduation rate of 91 percent. “Every one of you in the this room had some part in that number,” Dr. Bannon said. “We are one big Copiague family. I believe the main reason we are so successful is because of the relationships we cultivate with our students, their families and each other.” Board of Education Vice President Laura Gavey echoed those same sentiments. “We are a family who watch out for the children we serve,” she said. “With your help, we will continue to make sure our children have the best education possible.” A s s i s t a n t Superintendent for Human Resources Todd Andrews gave staff an overview of the changes to the emergency response plan. Dr. Bannon offered a detailed explanation of

capital projects update and a timeline of when the projects are set to begin. Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Jeanette Altruda spoke about preparing for 21st century learning and navigated some of the resources and tools on the district’s new website. After a presentation of the service awards for 20, 25 and 30 years in the district, faculty returned to their respective buildings to prepare for the upcoming school year.

campaign. Educational Bus Transportation, which services the Copiague School District, pulled into the administrative building with the packed boxes and members of Copiague Middle School’s Builders Club, the junior version of the Key Club, were on hand ready to help unload the packages. Representatives from

United Way said they received more donations than ever and the need keeps growing. The program, now in its eighth year, also has the support of many corporate partners. The Builders Club, along with adviser Maria Ostrofsky, will sort through the supplies and package them for distribution throughout the buildings.

Each classroom will receive a leveled library. “The only way to improve reading is to read more,” said Mary O’Meara, the assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. “Students will have the opportunity to do more reading and more writing on current, relevant topics. We are excited to bring this new program to Amityville.” The staff developers simulated Reading and Writing Project lessons with the teachers throughout the training. Teachers learned how to confer with individual and small groups of students over their reading selections. The Reading and Writing Project outlines a yearly curriculum with six to eight units of study per grade. Second-graders will focus much of the year on nonfiction books while fourth-graders will tackle fiction, journalism and poetry. By eighth grade, students will be exploring multiple genres while analyzing their reading through position papers, essays and memoirs. Kelly Ann Wilson, a

seventh- and eighth-grade English teacher, said she is looking forward to implementing the new program in her classes and allowing students to have more input in their literacy development. “I’ve definitely gotten the opportunity to understand how to better teach our children how to love reading,” she said. Over the summer, Amityville’s principals participated in a weeklong training program, and throughout the school year there will be monthly job-embedded coaching for the teachers. They will also be able to attend one-day workshops each month at Columbia Teacher’s College. Ms. O’Meara said this is part of the district’s “robust and comprehensive” implementation of the new program to support the teachers and, ultimately, the students. “I am thrilled that so many teachers took part in this invaluable training program that will put our students on a path to success,” said Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly.

Easing the Transition In an effort to ease the transition to their new building, Copiague Middle School in the Copiague School District hosted an orientation and barbecue for sixth-grade students on August 31st. The incoming class was welcomed by Principal

The Amityville Union Free School District is expanding a literacy initiative this year at the elementary and middle school levels that takes a new approach to reading and writing instruction, and teachers recently spent four days learning about the program. Three staff developers from the Columbia Teachers College hosted the Reading and Writing Project Institute in August. Nearly 100 teachers took part in the workshop at Edmund W. Miles Middle School. Implementation of the program followed a year of study by the English Language Arts subcommittee of the district’s Curriculum Advisory Council. The mission of the Reading and Writing Project is to help students become avid and skilled readers, writers and inquirers. Teachers were trained to deliver instruction to meet the students at their reading level and put them on a path to greater achievement. The focus is on individual and small-group reading assignments, in which students choose appropriate books with

Andrew Lagnado, who then introduced each member of the teaching team. Since the students participated in an orientation back in May, the day allowed students to navigate the building, meet their teachers and try out their lockers, Lagnado said.

After a brief tour of the building, the sixth-graders met with their homeroom teacher and received their class schedule. The students tested their lockers and ended the day with a barbecue sponsored by the PTA.

insurance. Breast cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer among women worldwide. According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer during their lifetime. “Successful treatment of breast cancer often depends on early detection. Sometimes safety upgrades around the house must take precedence over more popular projects.

Many carbon monoxide detectors work for five to seven years. Check the back of alarms for a date stamp that indicates how old the product is and when it expires. Safety checklists are an important part of home maintenance. A proactive approach can prevent both injuries and damage to the home.

How to Recognize Water Damage in a Home

Water damage is a potentially costly problem that can afflict any home. Old homes tend to be most susceptible to water damage, and that damage can manifest itself in various ways. The following are some telltale signs of water damage that should give prospective home buyers pause and compel current homeowners to seek professional assistance as soon as possible: Stains Many prospective home buyers
