with Jamie Lynn Ryan When We Were Young There’s something about this time of year, even being 17-plus years removed from school, that still resonates with a certain degree of excitement. First days, new supplies in hand, a fashionable outfit all picked out the night before… just seeing snapshots of my friends’ children brings back a ﬂood of memories from when I was a child, excitedly comparing schedules with my own classmates, mapping out what routes to take to class, planning who to eat lunch with the important things. How much has changed in the decades since. I know plenty of us would be thrilled to return to those simpler times, to when our biggest concern was having pool first period, or how to manage to squeeze in a stop at our lockers in between each class so as not to have to lug piles of books around the entire day. Even the workload seems trivial by comparison. We were competing for grades; but really, the entire structure was but a microcosm of the stresses of

daily “adult” life. It’s funny how we think we have it all figured out when we’re younger; no one can possibly offer us any insight that doesn’t match our own. We skate from one year to the next, until we eventually have to decide what to do with the rest of our lives. And even then, we have that cushion of college, the ultimate in years spent “finding” yourself. And really, all these years later, has any of us truly found what we thought we were looking for back then? I recall one teacher in high school who constantly warned us that, as many “friends” as we had collected through those formative years, there would come a day when less than a handful would remain. “Two, maybe three, tops,” he would say. “Just you wait and see.” Impossible, we all scoffed, as we remained confident that all those whom we spent the majority of classes and extracurricular activities with would always be by our side.

It wasn’t immediate. In fact, there were many friendships I maintained throughout college and even beyond. But, with each passing year, the list grew smaller. This is not to say that we would be incapable of picking up where we left off on any given day; but it’s not the same. Gone are the days of constantly talking on the phone, making plans to catch up, replaced instead by an occasional text message, a vague reference to “grabbing dinner” one of these days - and there it generally remains. If anything, this realization only confirms that I should have fully appreciated those school days as they were unfolding. How young and innocent we were, how little we knew of what was to come in the years that have since elapsed… how precious that time truly was. Here’s to all those students living those years as we speak. May they always appreciate them the way I have now learned to in hindsight.

Setting the Stage Copiague School District welcomed 20 new teachers for the 2017-2018 school year during new teacher orientation on August 28th and 29th. Todd Andrews, Copiague School District’s assistant superintendent for human resources, commenced the first day of meetings by introducing the district’s administrators and board of education members. Board of Education President Michael Greb welcomed the newest faculty members to the Copiague School District. “You are here for one reason only; we felt you were the best for our students,” he said. “We

want you to be successful and utilize the resources that are out there. Get to know your peers; ask your supervisors for help; go to the principals or the central office – everyone in Copiague is one big family.” Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon echoed those sentiments and spoke about the importance of relationships in Copiague. “The success of Copiague is because we all realize it’s about the relationships we build,” she said. “The first thing you need to consider is how you are going to forge those relationships with students. You have

the potential to make a difference every single day.” Building principals introduced the new hires and offered well wishes for the upcoming school year. To get a better understanding of the community, the new teachers took a bus tour of the district. Kelly Urraro, the district’s director of technology, presented an overview of the available technology tools. On day two of the orientation, the new teachers had the opportunity to spend time in their buildings and meet with their colleagues.

When the planes hit and lives were lost, it was a shot through the heart, But patriotism took control and everyone did their part. It seemed like a horrible movie, all the fire, dust and smoke, It was reality just the same, when America began to hope. Innocent passengers and heroic firefighters lost their lives, Women lost their husbands and grown men lost their wives.

America grew stronger from this tragic day, to aid the ones who suffer, America is a country we live for, we die for, because we love her. Hearts and courage were plainly shown by all the volunteers, To do what they could to eliminate all of peoples’ fears.

In the midst of ground zero, where debris and dust will cover, What America truly stands for, is what we all discover. It’s not just a name, it’s not just land, it’s not why we are here, America is the air we breathe; it’s something we hold dear. The pride for our country came out that month, to deal with the unbelievable, And the fact that everyone banded together seemed so inconceivable.

Successful Start Students, administrators and staff at Copiague School District were welcomed back for the 2017-2018 school year on September 5th. Students were eager to meet their new teachers and classmates as they spent their mornings settling into a routine. Walkers and bussers

arrived ready to start their day at their respective buildings with their backpacks stuffed with new school supplies. Principals and teachers stood outside and helped guide students into one of the district’s four elementary schools, Copiague Middle School or Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School.

Student orientations during the summer months eased the transition for many new to their building, and at middle school and high school, teachers assisted the newcomers in navigating the hallways and lockers.

New Learning Adventure

Students in the Amityville Union Free School District returned to school on September 5th enthusiastic for the year ahead. “I want to get good grades and I’m excited to meet my new teacher,” said Tyjae Moore, a sixth-grader at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School. Just as important as the academics, she said, is displaying good character and serving as a role model for the fourth- and fifthgraders. and engineering, and additional Chromebooks with Google Suite will provide all students with increased access to stateof-the-art technology. “We are excited that the school is buzzing again,” Ms. Hyland said, as new Assistant Principal Sonia Rodrigo joined her in walking around the building and greeting students and teachers. “It is great to see the children’s smiles and hear their laughter. This year, they will go on wonderful learning adventures filled with opportunities to explore and grow.” Northeast Elementary School welcomed about 220 kindergartners. Many of those students attended the school last year for the

pre-K program, but the beginning of kindergarten meant a full day of school, lunch in the cafeteria, recess and attending all of the special subject areas. Several teachers read their classes “The Kissing Hand,” a book about a child going to school for the first time. The first day also included tours of the school, an introduction to classroom routines and some crafts. “It’s a whole new world for them,” said kindergarten teacher Renee Chandler, who helped her students make “I Love Kindergarten” hats. “I’m just ready to jump back and in and see how much they learn and grow this year.”

When we lived in much simpler times, the immediate family decided who controlled the funeral service. The order of who controlled the funeral was the following: First and foremost, it was the spouse who decided on the method of final disposition, cremation, burial, church service, etc. If there was no spouse, it was the children over 18 of the deceased who decided, and usually they agreed with each other; if the individual was not married, the parents made the decisions; if no parents, the brothers and sisters; and last on the list were aunts, uncles, or cousins. If there weren’t any living relatives or executors of the will, the Public Administrator made the decision. The Law has changed. NYS Public Health Law 4201(2) provides for the designation in a written instrument of a person who shall control the disposition of the remains of a deceased person. Under Public Health Law 4201(3) the written instrument must be signed and dated by the decedent and the agent and properly witnessed. Now, understand I am not a lawyer, but my understanding of this law is that with the proper form, an individual can appoint someone other than his or her spouse to have control over their final disposition. For instance, a person who never divorced can appoint a significant other to control their final disposition. A person who lives with a domestic partner can appoint that person rather than his or her family to have control of the final disposition. A person who has married for a second time can appoint his or her children as agents for their funeral. If it is your intent to have someone other than your immediate next of kin to have control of your final disposition, or if you want a specific child, parent, or sibling to be in absolute control of your funeral--speak to an attorney and fi ll out the necessary paperwork. Then I would suggest taking it to an attorney for review.
