The former Harbor and Manor elementary school students will first spend three years together at Seaford Middle School. Principal Dan Smith said that the transition to middle school, where students will change classes and have lockers for the first time, isn’t that scary and told them, “After the first week or two, you’re going to become experts.” He reviewed a typical sixth grade schedule while Assistant Principal Lisa Dunn talked about the many extracurricular activities that are available. Students and their parents toured the building with assistance from sixth grade teachers and student council leaders. They also learned about this year’s theme, “Be kind, be a friend, be an achiever, be creative, be respectful and be yourself.” Both orientations featured an instructional technology presentation, as each incoming sixth and ninth grader will receive his or her own laptop for use both in school and at home. Technology Director Fred Kaden and Executive Director of Instructional Technology and STEM Tom Lynch introduced students to the devices that they will receive in September and will use in most, if not all of their classes.

“Exceeding expectations” is the mission for the 201920 school year at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District, Acting Principal Earl Mitchell announced at orientation on Aug. 22. He outlined his vision for success for every student in speaking to the incoming seventh graders and their parents. Mr. Mitchell was joined by Assistant Principal Paul Duguay as well as teachers and guidance counselors in welcoming the students who just two months ago completed elementary school. With ninth grade

slated to move to the high school in 2020, they will have short two-year stay at the middle school, but staff members want them to make the most out of that time. Students learned about the wealth of academic offerings, athletic programs and extracurricular opportunities. A goal at the middle school is to create interested and engaged learners, and Mr. Mitchell explained that even the most challenging courses are infused with fun lessons and activities. The Twilight Wish Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization whose mission is to honor and enrich the lives of seniors through intergenerational Twilight W i s h celebrations. Senior citizens are the fastest growing population in the world. The number of Americans who are 65 and older is projected to more than double to over 98 million by 2060. In the United States today, 1 in 3 seniors older than 65 live alone and the number of seniors living alone only increases with age. Many of these seniors experience social isolation, which can lead to undesirable conditions. Granting a Twilight Wish can help change that! You can qualify for a Twilight Wish if you are at least 65 years old, are a legal U.S. citizen, demonstrate financial need, provide a history of giving back to others and possess the cognitive, emotional and physical ability to experience the wish. Since the organization’s founding in 2003, their goal has been to make the world a nicer place to age, one Twilight Wish at a time. When a Twilight Wish is granted, a senior is recognized for all that they have done throughout their lives and is shown that they are appreciated and valued. Sometimes a wish fulfills an immediate need, and sometimes it is a last wish or lifetime dream. Large or small, all wishes provide a meaningful “thank you” to the senior for a lifetime of service to others. Every wish they grant helps build a culture that values

and respects our senior population. Twilight Wish recipients report that having their wish granted impacted their life for the better. Their mental and physical health often improved, positively changing their outlook on life! The wishes that this organization grants truly changes the way that our society views aging, as it witnesses seniors living life to the fullest. By sharing their recipients’ stories, they inspire both older and younger generations and help bring about a cultural shift in how aging is perceived in our society. To date, the Twilight Wish Foundation has granted over 3,000 wishes throughout our country, ranging from simple needs wishes, such as shaving razors for nursing home veterans, to living life to the fullest wishes, such as going cross country in a tractor trailer truck. This Foundation has expanded throughout America and they currently have 17 chapters. The majority of their chapter directors and chapter volunteers have full-time jobs, but volunteer their time because they believe so much in the impact Twilight Wish has on our senior population. They are presently looking to expand their outreach to seniors by making our business and community leaders/charitable organizations aware of who they are. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School social studies teacher Michelle Penyy traveled to South Korea this summer as one of 30 teachers from across the nation selected as a World History Digital Education fellow. Fellows went through a competitive selection process. After their acceptance, they were required to complete readings related to the live webinars on various topics about the Asian country. As part of the fellowship, teachers also create a unique lesson plan connected to their trip to Korea and present about their experiences there. The highlight of the fellowship was a 10-day visit to the Republic of Korea. The trip emphasized a deeper understanding of the rich history of the Korean peninsula, including its simultaneous economic growth and democratization. During the trip, fellows explored the history and culture of Korea through key historical sites, museums and conversations with various scholars. Among the highlights of the trip was a visit to the Demilitarization Zone to see the 60-year-old border that has divided the

Principal, Upperclassmen Welcome New Sophomores “This is your time to shine,” Amityville Memorial High School Acting Principal Edward Plaia told incoming 10th graders, who were joined by their parents for orientation. The program featured a comprehensive overview of high school, including academic expectations, athletic and extracurricular opportunities, and words of encouragement for the Class of 2022. The students have a familiar face in Mr. Plaia, their former principal at Edmund W. Miles Middle School. He said that all of the high school administrators, teachers and support staff are committed to helping them succeed.
