ecurity Supervisor Arthur Nappo was patrolling the grounds of South Oaks Hospital on a summer evening in June when a speeding vehicle pulled up to the front of one of the patient buildings. He was told one of the passengers had overdosed on heroin and immediately ordered the staff to call 911 and called a “code blue.” Thanks to his actions, the patient survived and was transferred to a local hospital.

Of Deadlines & Days Off By: Jamie Lynn Ryan What to write... It’s 8 p.m. on deadline day, and I have no column prepared. Nothing exciting going on, no inspiration to speak of, nothing. Makes for stimulating reading, right? Well, I am preparing to go away on vacation, so that’s something. But in the midst of finishing up and making sure all the loose ends are taken care of, I somehow lost the inspiration for my own column along the way. Not that I often spend much time contemplating it, but I at least have the option

of putting a little more thought into it. Today, not so much. Vacations are funny like that. You spend so many extra hours preparing to go away that, by the time you get to where you’re going, it hardly seems worth the effort. Shouldn’t the days leading up to a get-away be somewhat calming too? And don’t even get me started on the headache that awaits once you return from any kind of lengthy break. Piles of mail, inboxes overflowing with unread messages, tons of voicemails… Ah, but to forget about it all for a day or

two, to be completely disconnected from the world – no phones, no e-mails, no computers, no interruptions. Just peace and quiet and relaxation. Sounds nice, doesn’t it? Let me know the next time you have a vacation like that. Really. I’d like to hear if anyone truly “gets away from it all” anymore. It doesn’t seem like it, but hey, maybe I’m in the minority. Maybe someone out there has discovered the great secret to dropping out of the rat race. We all have to come back to reality eventually. But let’s at least try to make the break worthwhile.

DOES BRUSHING CAUSE GUMS TO BLEED? QUESTION: Should tooth brushing make your gums bleed? ANSWER: If so, there's a good chance that some inflammation is going on. Pockets of bacteria may have developed around some of your teeth. Gum tissue has two parts. The lining or surface tissue and the dense connective tissue that lies under it. In the early destruction phase, called gingivitis, bacteria attack the gum lining and connective tissue. Your body sends cells to fight the bacteria, but some of them are destroyed in the process. When these cells die, enzymes and other substances are released that contribute to the destruction of gum tissue and bone. As the disease progresses, you may notice that your gum tissue looks red and shiny. It may also look slightly puffy or swollen and bleed more easily. Fortunately, gum disease, even at this stage, is reversible if you get the treatment you need from your dentist. The longer you delay, the greater your chance of losing teeth.

Obesity continues to be a growing problem among schoolaged children and can contribute to the onset of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, high cholesterol, and many other adverse medical conditions. Children attending school will eat at least one meal away from home each day. A healthy lunch provides sound nutrition to give students energy to do well in school and for the rest of the day. Children who do not eat well at lunch may have difficulty concentrating, while others may feel sluggish or tired. As part of the 2010 Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act, the United States National School Lunch Program was revised to guarantee healthy, nutritionally sound choices, as established by the U.S. Department of Agriculture, for lunch. America’s school menus were altered to be healthier than ever, including more fruits and vegetables while limiting calories. Despite some controversy through the years, including some students saying the smaller portions and food choices aren’t always satisfying, states suffering from high child obesity rates have seen marked improvements. Canada is one of the few leading industrialized countries that does not have a national nutrition strategy to implement healthy school lunches. It’s estimated that only 10 to 15 percent of Canadian children have access to school meals. These meals are not provided by a wellfunded national program, but by a patchwork of individual volunteer efforts, some provincial government funding and

When you speak to Steven Parrinelli today, you sense a smart, confident young man who is carefully selecting his next moves to achieve his goal of a career in medicine. But as a grammar school student at St. Patrick School in Huntington, Steven hadn’t selected a direction for his life. In fact, according to Steven;

“My breakout years didn’t come until I was a high school student.” Parents That Believed In Catholic School Like many of the students in Catholic elementary schools, Steven started in elementary school because his parents “are strong believers in Catholic education”. The elementary school they

selected for Steven, St. Patrick’s in Huntington, reinforced the values they lived at home and was able to provide a great deal of individual attention to Steven’s learning needs. Steven remembers St. Patrick’s for its small size, for the many friends he made during his time there, and for the strong feeling of community within St. Patrick Parish and School. “St. Patrick’s provided an excellent educational foundation, and I was a good student, but I hadn’t yet gotten competitive about my grades.” said Steven. The “Breakout” Years Like the overwhelming majority of Catholic elementary school students, Steven elected to go to Catholic high school and like the most of the students he got his first choice of schools: St. Dominic’s in Oyster Bay. It was after mid-

term exams in Steven’s first year at St. Dominic High School that he had what he considers his ‘breakout’. The chance to be on the Honor Roll at St. Dominic’s gave him the incentive. The additional recognition each trimester of a Principal’s List Luncheon made it personal. The individual attention he received and the chance to know the teachers from his AP (Advanced Placement) classes personally were some of Steven’s favorite parts of the high school experience. One Individual Stands Out While the interpersonal relationships Steven enjoyed with his teachers and members of the administration were

powerful incentives, one particular relationship stands out. As Steven puts it; “My Global History and US History teacher, Mr. Drysielski, taught me the most valuable skill I mastered in high school.” “He taught me how to express myself better in writing.” Steven continued. “Being a better writer has helped me everywhere.” Looking Forward After looking at various college options, Steven was invited by the University of Scranton to visit their campus. In Steven’s words; “I felt like I belonged here.” The manageable size of the school, the friendly people, and a strong science program were the ‘selling points’. That and

the Dean’s Scholarship which will fund half of Steven’s college were all considerations in selecting the University of Scranton. “I am considering a career in medicine,” said Steven. “The strong science program at the University of Scranton will help me prepare for medical school.” My discussion with Steven ended with his rationale for wanting to become a doctor; “I like to help people.” We couldn’t agree more! Steven is a fine example of the academically prepared and spiritually grounded students graduating from Long Island’s Catholic schools.

on the scene was that if Mr. Nappo had not acted immediately, the young man would not have survived. “Artie Nappo clearly made a difference in the life of this young man and demonstrated to all staff the importance of engagement, leadership and teamwork,” said Robert E. Detor, president and CEO of South Oaks Hospital and Broadlawn Manor Nursing & Rehabilitation Center. “You just know this guy is in trouble and we needed to get things going quickly,” Mr. Nappo said. “I was very happy heading home that evening, knowing he was going to be OK and was extremely proud of the expertise and compassion of the members of our clinical team. I also came away with a heightened awareness regarding the

significance of having a drug like Narcan available to support the medical intervention when someone has overdosed.” Gerard Heinz, Director of Security, at South Oaks Hospital called Mr. Nappo a dedicated and respected member of the security team. “On the evening of this incident,” Mr. Heinz said, “he conducted himself in an exemplary manner, providing customer service at the highest level while securing the necessary team in the shortest amount of time to save the life of this young man.” Mr. Nappo is a retired New York City Police Sergeant who has worked with the South Oaks security team for four years. He lives in Suffolk County with his lovely wife, two daughters and a son.

That only takes away space for the stuff kids do need for class. • Group according to schedule. In addition to employing a color-coding system, students also can group books by daily schedule. Organize the locker based on which classes are held in the morning and afternoon. This makes it less likely that students will forget supplies they need for class. • Think about extra accessories. Lockers have the basics, which are usually a shelf and a hook for coats. All sorts of locker accessories exist to customize the interior. An extra shelf may be helpful for storing books or smaller supplies. Look into a message board or more hooks that can be hung on the inside of the door. Figure out what your child can use to keep items from piling up on the floor. • Develop a maintenance plan. Old assignments may begin to accumulate inside a locker. Students learn many important lessons while in middle school and high school. Assignments get progressively more difficult, and students grow accustomed to being independent thinkers and largely responsible for their educational accomplishments. In addition, students may learn other lessons, such as how organization can play a critical role in success and benefit them both in the classroom and out of it. Students are typically introduced to lockers during high school or middle school. As elementary school students, kids use classroom desks to store books and supplies, and how desks are organized is often governed by teachers who have firm rules regarding the condition of desks. Lockers are an entirely different story. Students are solely responsible for organizing and maintaining their lockers and may be tasked with following a few rules set forth by the school. Students may overlook the importance of organized lockers, and in such instances lockers can easily become disaster areas. But a messy locker can add unnecessary stress to a school day. Getting lockers organized requires some effort and upkeep. • Color code the locker. Grouping subjects by color can make it easier to find notebooks, textbooks and folders in a locker. If

Diabetes Self-Management The Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone, Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory and Legislator Monica Martinez invite residents who have diabetes to attend a free program that will enable them to manage their diabetes. The program, conducted by the Department of Health Services in collaboration with Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County, comprises four classes that cover suggestions for keeping blood sugar in target range, choosing a healthful meal plan and balancing food, exercise and medications. The Brentwood program will be conducted in Spanish only. “These classes arm participants with the knowledge and skills they need to properly manage their diabetes and enable them to enjoy an improved quality of life,” said Bellone. According to the National Diabetes Statistics Report, 2014, 21 million people in the U.S. have been diagnosed with diabetes and another 8.1 people, nearly 28 percent the U.S. population, are undiagnosed. Diabetes is the most rapidly growing

chronic disease of our time, affecting one out of every 12 adults in New York. It is the leading cause of new blindness, kidney disease and amputation and contributes greatly to heart disease and stroke. Minority populations are at high risk, especially those who are African American, Latino, Native American and Asian American. “Diabetes causes more deaths a year than cancer and AIDS combined,” said Legislator Gregory. “I encourage my constituents who have diabetes to take the necessary steps to keep their blood sugar under control and thereby avoid the serious health conditions which can accompany this disease.” “Diabetes is an urgent health problem in the Latino community,” said Legislator Monica R. Martinez. “The rate of diabetes among Latinos is almost double those of nonLatinos. Many students take the bus to school twice a day, five days a week. Approximately 26 million elementary and secondary school children ride school buses daily in the United States, and the U.S. Department of Transportation says more than 50 percent of all K-12 students in the country ride yellow school buses, traveling approximately 4 billion miles each year. The vast majority of these miles are traveled without incident. In fact, according to the National Safety Council, the national school bus accident rate is 0.01 per 100 miles traveled, compared to 0.96 for other passenger vehicles, which makes school buses considerably safer than other passenger vehicles. Though school buses are safe, there are other ways to make them even safer. Children, especially those new to school buses, may find the bus fun and unique and not pay attention to simple safety rules. But parents should take steps to ensure that youngsters always heed the

following school bus safety guidelines. • Wait for the bus in a safe location that is away from traffic, ideally staying in a designated school bus stop until the bus arrives. • Dress for optimal visibility, especially in inclement weather when it can be difficult for the school bus driver and other motorists to see pedestrians. • Do not board the bus until it comes to a complete stop. Wait for the driver to open the door, which engages the “Stop” sign for oncoming motorists. • Use the handrail and enter the bus in an orderly manner. • Promptly find a seat, sit down and buckle the safety belt if there is one available. Students assigned seats on the bus should take their seat without making a fuss. • Keep backpacks and other belongings out of the center aisle. Store them under your seat or on your lap. • Remain seated at all times while the bus is in motion. • Keep arms, hands, legs,

Patients at Cohen Children’s Medical Center and their families enjoyed a unique theatrical experience last week thanks to the John W. Engeman Theater of Northport, LI., which put on a fill-blown production of “Seussical” in the hospital’s lobby. The production, which featured a multitalented troupe of actors in full Seuss regalia, was sponsored jointly by Bethpage Federal Credit Union and the medical center. The hospital’s lobby was transformed into an intimate theatre setting, complete with a working stage and theatrical lighting. Following the one -hour production, cast members signed colorful playbills designed especially for children. And, for those patients unable to leave their rooms, the entire performance was telecast live throughout the hospital. “We couldn’t be more delighted to bring

“Seussical” to Cohen Children’s Medical Center, said the theater’s managing director and owner, Kevin O’Neill, while the cast was taking its bows. “Since our earliest history, theater has been the basic form of communication - uniting its audience and providing people with the ability to share their most basic emotions. “All of us here at the John W. Engeman Theater understand how difficult it must be for children and their families who are unable to experience the wonder of theater while they’re confined in hospital. That’s why we felt it was so important to bring the theater to them. On Thursday, October 23rd, the Women’s Fund of Long Island (WFLI) will hold its 20th Annual Women Achievers Breakfast at Crest Hollow Country Club in Woodbury, NY at 7:30 a.m. to 10:00 a.m. WFLI is celebrating 20 years of grantmaking. This event draws more than 700 attendees each year as it celebrates the accomplishments of Long Island women who have made outstanding contributions to their communities and their industries. This year’s honorees are Sarah Kate Ellis, CEO and President of GLAAD, the nation’s only Lesbian, Gay Bisexual and Transgender (LGBT) Media advocacy nonprofit. and Dr. Jennifer Shaer, Partner, Board Member of Allied Physicians Group and pediatrician and breastfeeding medicine specialist. “We are thrilled to be honoring Sarah Kate and Dr. Shaer

– two extraordinary women whose personal journeys and diverse accomplishments are an inspiration and make them exceptional role models for women and girls across Long Island,” said Stacey Scarpone, WFLI Executive Director. WFLI’s Young Women Leader Awards will be presented to Tazim Merchant, a junior at Locust Valley High School and Gabrielle Ramirez, sophomore at Walt Whitman High School. They will each receive the Shapiro-McCormick Young Woman Leader Award named for the cofounders of the Women on the Job project for women’s workplace rights, which focused on WFLI’s gender equality advocacy efforts. “Our Young Women Leader Award recognizes inspirational young women who are engaged in their schools and communities take on projects that advance the greater good and

sometimes even confront challenges with grace and power,” added Ms. Scarpone. “Tazim and Gaby reflect these qualities and we are proud to honor their achievements. We’re confident that they will continue to positively touch many lives as they go through life.” The Breakfast will take place on October 23rd. Walking For Alzheimer’s On Saturday, September 6th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. will host its 11th Annual Old Bethpage Walk for Alzheimer’s & Coney Island Street Fair, which take place at Old Bethpage Village Restoration, located at 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, NY. This is a 5-kilometer (3.1 mile) walk, which will be held rain or shine. Registration and breakfast begin at 8:30 a.m., followed by a dedication ceremony at 10:00 a.m. to honor those who died during the September 11th, 2001 attacks, then a ribbon cutting ceremony and walk starting at 11:00 a.m. From there, walkers will have the opportunity to tour the grounds and see some of the historically preserved buildings along

the way. S p o n s o r s h i p opportunities are available. This year’s fundraising goal is $400,000. Teams and individuals are encouraged to raise money, all of which will go to ADRC for Alzheimer’s research and care. Walkers who raise $100 or more will be treated to a Coney Islandthemed lunch and live entertainment. Finding The Right Routine By: Dr. Raymond J. Huntington Arguably one of the most essential traits that your child can acquire throughout his or her education is good organization. Embracing strong organizational habits and a daily routine can help your child make the most of homework time and avoid wasting time. Similarly, a consistent homework routine helps children become selfsufficient students and inspires them to take responsibility. Routine gives students a purpose, thereby encouraging them to approach learning new skills and concepts with confidence. While routine is important for students to thrive, what works for one child might not work

for another. Here are a few tips for parents to help their child find the right homework routine: Some children need an after-school break. Many parents assume the best approach to homework - especially for younger children who may not have many after-school extracurricular activities to dive in the moment they get home from school. However, this may not work for every child. Some children do much better when they decompress for 30 minutes before getting started on homework. Other children do their best work while still in “school mode.” On the other hand, some students find that a break before dinner time only distracts them. On days that your child does not have sports practice or activities after

school, he or she may prefer to get homework completed right away. Children who tend to procrastinate need help with prioritization. While your goal should be to help your child become an independent studier, you can help him or her learn how to develop a daily homework to-do list that minimizes downtime. If your child tends to spin his or her wheels when it comes to homework, spend five minutes together before he or she gets started to develop a game plan and estimated amount of time for each item on the to-do list. Short study sessions are better than homework marathons. Much has been documented about the benefit of frequent, abbreviated study sessions. Not only do shorter study

periods encourage students to repeatedly review concepts, it is far easier for students to stay focused for brief periods of time. It is ok if your child only has 15 minutes after school to get some homework in and needs to resume later on, that’s okay. Breaking up the study sessions may actually be a good thing for his or her retention. Try alternating. Encourage your child to break down larger, more complex assignments rather than try to knock them out in one sitting. If your child is writing a paper, for example, have him or her write a few pages, then turn his or her attention to another subject. Small goals and incentives can be helpful. No matter the age of your child, it’s always helpful

to have goals to work toward. Once your child finishes one subject, he or she should reward him or herself with a five-minute break to text back a friend or step outside for some fresh air. When your child completes all of his or her homework, allow some free time to do whatever he or she wants television or computer time, for example. When you approach the homework routine, keep in mind that consistency is the key. Once your child embraces homework and studying as a daily habit, he or she will become more proficient at managing his or her time effectively, in school and in life.
