Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is presenting Bradstock XXII, a two-day festival featuring live music and poetry on Saturday, September 5th, from noon to 8 p.m. and Sunday, September 6th, from noon to 9 p.m. A portion of the proceeds from the event will benefit the camp’s programs for children and young adults with special needs. Twelve Skydivers (mostly Rotarians) raised many thousands of dollars in sponsorships for Rotary Jump for Life, program, so as to fund pediatric surgery for indigent children this past Saturday August 22nd. This wonderful and unique event was deemed a huge success, and many children will receive the precious Gift of Life, because of this. Gift of life’s mission is to provide hope to children from developing countries with heart disease regardless of their gender, creed, or national origin, by supporting autonomous Gift of Life programs in their efforts to

care for these children in need, and coordinating the development of sustainable pediatric cardiac surgery and aftercare programs in select countries, through the empowerment of their healthcare professionals. The Gift of Life Program, which began in 1975 on Long Island, is today a worldwide Rotary International Service Program. Its primary purpose is to help those needy children who require corrective heart surgery secure another lease on life through the miracle of heart surgery in a Gift of Life Participating Hospital.

Summer’s Swan Song By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And there it is. Not two days into September, and the autumn zealots are out in force, proclaiming the “end” of summer to be upon us. Never mind the fact that the calendar still calls for a full three weeks of the season. Nope. Pack away the bathing suits, close up the pools, pay no mind to the warm radiance of the sun. Fall has arrived. Clearly, I’m not thrilled by this rush to transition. While I can appreciate the glory of autumn in all its splendor, I’m pretty sure that I recall there being many who spent the better part of last winter counting down the days to summer. What happened? Had

your fill of beautiful beach days? Grown tired of sunlit evenings and family barbecues in the backyard? I can understand the school year dictating some sort of routine for those still beholden to a bell schedule; but for the rest of us, there is simply no excuse to not savor these remaining weeks. “Summer vacation” may be over, but for those of us who haven’t been fortunate to take advantage of it, this is the prime time for long weekends and late afternoons spent soaking in the last rays of sunshine at the beach. The best part? While everyone else is off returning to his/her regularly scheduled

programs, the rest of us are left to enjoy the solitude. Not a bad tradeoff. If there is anything we have learned in recent years, it is that Mother Nature has infinitely more impact on our lives than the calendar year. We have had hurricanes at Halloween, snow for Thanksgiving and 70º days leading up to Christmas. You never can tell. But, in this case, the calendar says summer and the weather concurs. Savor it. Grab your bathing suit, pick up a few hot dogs and kick back in a lounge chair. Autumn will wait. In fact, I’m pretty sure it hasn’t even arrived yet.

One thing that has definitely puzzled my head is why the school year can seem to be so cyclic. It reaches the point where I am occasionally sickened by it. How does one make each day exciting? How can one feel motivated enough to awaken from bed and aspire? “Aspire to do what?” you might ask. Aspire to distinguish this day from others and consider it memorable. This will undoubtedly break that cycle and in fact inscribe a new tale into the course of one’s life. Distinction is key. Distinction is golden. If you need to ask how you can perform such a task, I will happily recommend what to do. These have certainly assisted me in differentiating one day from others. Firstly, be open to listening to others. If you shut out yourself from the rest of the world, you’ll feel confined and limited. If someone comes up to you and asks if you want to hang out with them - take that invitation. And if you are stuck on something and offered help, accept that person’s advice and see. Just see! Who knows? You might just bridge the gap between the first part and the second part.

The second part is to make more friends. You know, amigos, companions, even acquaintances. Call them whatever you’d like, as long as it’s appropriate. Just obtain a few. Also, be sure that they are true friends. By “true,” I mean that they are spending time with you because they are fond of you as a person. If they are with you only because they envy you for some of your possessions, then they are not true friends. Following the first two parts will lead one to the third and final part, which is to make light. Express levity whenever and wherever you can. Make jokes at the appropriate instances. This is helpful because one is always going to withstand pessimistic days and experience exuberant days. See? These three steps can aid in making school days and any day more excitingly different. If this has motivated you to take action and get on top of the cycle, give yourself small applause and two big thumbs up! Now, this all may sound well and good; however, only you can make it happen! So get up, vow to alter the chain of events for your greater benefit, and distinguish!

New Educators Welcomed To kick off the 2015-2016 school year, the Amityville Union Free School District hosted their annual new teacher orientation to welcome new faculty members to the district on August 24th. Following breakfast, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary T. Kelly offered words of welcome and introduced district administrators and members of the Board of Education. Board of Education President Ronald Moss addressed the audience to share his personal experience in the district and provided sage words of advice.

“I started here, graduated from here, left and came back,” said Moss. “Life is an experience. I tell everyone to treat it as such and you will have an experience with these students.” During the orientation, teachers watched presentations led by district administrators on topics including teacher certification, technology in the schools and the annual professional performance review process. To help familiarize them with the area, teachers took a bus tour to the district’s five school buildings. Following the tour, the newly hired faculty

members met principals at their respective school buildings to discuss building goals and procedures and received a tour of the building and a schedule. “I believe that each of you has the passion, drive, and commitment to take our district and our students to the next level of achievement,” said Dr. Kelly. “I am very confident in your ability to be a champion for our children and know that you will make a positive contribution to our schools and community.”

Avoid Threats To Urinary Tract Health (NAPSI)—Scientists have found an important fact about a sensitive topic. The discomfort of a urinary tract infection (UTI) is all too common— for a surprising reason. According to a study in the Journal Emerging Infectious Diseases, it can come from consuming chicken or eggs polluted with antibiotic-resistant E. coli bacteria. What To Watch For The condition affects

nearly half of all women at some time in their lives and 12 percent of men. Symptoms can hit suddenly. They include urinary frequency, burning and pain. There can also be cloudiness or blood in the urine. Getting prompt medical attention is critical. If left untreated, the infection can become serious and cause kidney damage. What To Do Fortunately, there are

five steps you can take to prevent the problem: • Go organic. Until more rigorous laws are enforced on antibiotic use with livestock, choose organic meats and eggs and make sure your meat is thoroughly cooked (chicken should always be cooked to 165 degrees Fahrenheit). Designate a cutting board solely for raw meat and poultry and wash it immediately after use with hot, soapy water.

When preparing chicken, be sure to clean your hands thoroughly afterward • Drink plenty of water. The Institute of Medicine recommends about 72 ounces a day. Dehydration increases the risk of bacterial growth. • Avoid tight clothing. • Be cautious with OTC drugs. Antihistamines and certain cold medications can cause urinary retention, which increases the risk of a UTI. Ask your

doctor or pharmacist about alternatives. • Supplement with cranberry. Cranberries can keep bacteria from adhering to the bladder wall. The active components responsible for this effect are the condensed tannins or proanthocyanidins (a type of flavonoid). A concentrated cranberry ingredient called Cran-Max has been shown in clinical studies to be comparable to

traditional antibiotics but without the side effects. The supplement ingredient is unique in that it contains all the vital parts of the cranberry—the fruit, seeds, skin and juice—in a special delivery system called BioShield that protects the active compounds from destruction by stomach acid. It’s available in supplements at pharmacies and health food stores.

For example, when Mayling Zhong and Chester Leung visited a PetSmart Charities National Adoption Weekend event, they knew there were many factors they needed to consider before adopting a pet. “We knew that our small apartment needed a small dog,” said Leung. The two met several dogs before stopping at Smokey. Just 4 months old, the terrierminiature pinscher mix was a little excitable in his crate when he arrived, as many puppies are. As the day went on, however, Smokey calmed down and seemed smart and eager to please. His fun-loving personality (and small size) convinced Zhong to adopt him-she knew he would

be the right fit for her and Leung. Within minutes, the couple was filling out the adoption paperwork and they were ready to welcome the new pup into their home. Pet Points To Ponder If you’re considering adoption, here are a few things to keep in mind: 1. Space: Do you live in an apartment or a house? Do you have a big backyard? Different types of dogs and cats require different amounts of exercise and space. Zhong and Leung knew they needed to take into consideration the size of their home as part of their decision to adopt. 2. Time: Decide how much time you can dedicate to caring for a dog or cat.
