Since 2004, Cutolo has served as a special education teacher at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School. He has also held the position of sitebased home instruction supervisor since 2013. Cutolo also served as the
summer school principal at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School during the past two years and assistant summer school principal from 2011-2013. Since 2006, Cutolo has coached varsity and junior varsity softball, varsity and junior varsity girls basketball, varsity and junior varsity football, varsity boys bowling and varsity girls bowling and golf intramurals teams. It’s that time of year again, that period of transition between seasons that seems to sneak up on us so quickly, yet stretch so luxuriously over the month of September, giving us the best of both worlds; the last lingering rays of summer sunshine mixed with the brisk chill of autumn air, ushering in pumpkin harvests and apple picking and all the holiday seasons which follow. What better time of year to appreciate all that nature has to offer, to savor the sunsets while looking ahead to the foliage, to dip your toes in the ocean one
last time while unpacking the fall wardrobe – and maybe shop for a few new accessories. It is a time for new beginnings, and for endings; for the start of the school year and the final days of summer leisure. Sure, every seasonal transition has its own benefits; but there is something about September… something uniquely magical about the twilight of summer and the golden glow of autumn that exceeds them all. This is why it’s so important to slow down and appreciate each day, each stage of metamorphosis, as they each bring their own special respective nuances.
So, enjoy these next three weeks, summer’s swan song; and look ahead to the autumnal equinox with equal anticipation. Each sunbeam, each fallen leaf… they each hold their own special significance. It is up to us to recognize these special gifts, and to hold onto them as the annual winter chill approaches, along with the chaos of the holiday season. Copiague Memorial Public Library
I thought it might be helpful to remind you of some information concerning the Catholic Church’s teaching and viewpoint on the practice of cremation. As you know, the Church does permit the practice of cremation as long as it is not being done as a direct contradiction to Catholic belief in the resurrection of the body on the last day. “Cremated remains” is the preferred term which gives more dignity to the mortal remains of the Christian, rather than the slang term “cremains.” The cremated remains may even be brought into church and the Funeral Mass may take place in the presence of the cremated remains if for some reason cremation takes place before the Mass is celebrated. However, the Church has some very specific rules concerning the respect and dignity to be accorded to the cremated remains. Article 417 in the Order of Christian Funerals tells us this - please take note of this very carefully: “The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come. This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and the final disposition. The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition that the Church requires. Whenever possible, appropriate means for recording with dignity the memory of the deceased should be adopted, such as a plaque or stone which records the name of the deceased.” So, to put it bluntly, one must do with the cremated remains what one would do with the body of the deceased: they must be buried or entombed. It is not appropriate to scatter the ashes or to keep them at home, nor is it acceptable to divide up the cremated remains into different pieces of jewelry for the family. I’m not kidding about that last one - the funeral industry will actually offer this as an option, but that is completely against Catholic teaching, and we should not participate in such a practice. Should you be thinking about cremation for yourself or for a family member, please be sure to follow the Catholic Church’s teaching about this practice, and if you have any questions, please feel free to contact us.

Residents with diabetes and their caregivers can learn about “Living Healthy with Diabetes.” The free six-class workshop is conducted in collaboration with Cornell University Cooperative Extension of Suffolk County and begins September 12th in Copiague. The classes in the program cover a variety of topics and provide the tools to help manage and take control of your health. Participants will learn new and practical ways to live better and healthier with diabetes. The six-week series is scheduled to meet as follows: Mondays, September

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, diabetes affects nearly 26 million people - 8.3 percent of the U.S. population. More than 18 million people have been diagnosed with diabetes

Living Healthy and it is estimated that seven million people have diabetes without any knowledge that they are afflicted with the disease. Diabetes is the leading cause of kidney failure, non-traumatic lower limb amputations and new cases of blindness among adults. It is a major cause of heart disease and stroke and the seventh leading cause of death in the U.S. Overall, the risk of death among people with diabetes is about twice that of similarly aged individuals without the disease. It is estimated that 35 percent of adults aged 20 and older have risk factors that make them pre-diabetic.
HAWAIIAN LUAU - On August 5th, Dominican Village senior residents got into the Hawaiian spirit by hosting its annual Hawaiian Luau. Residents enjoyed entertainment by Dance Aloha. Dance Aloha dancers mingled with our residents and employees and taught them how to quiver and shake their hips. Prizes were awarded to those with the most “Hawaiian” spirit.
