Over two dozen children who were once afraid of the water and lacked basic safety skills are now swimming thanks to free 1-on-1 swim lessons offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Long Island (BBBSLI) who teamed up with the Levittown Swim Association (LSA) to provide swim lessons this summer. The swim lessons were part of BBBSLI’s Summer Series which included a variety of free activities for kids and their mentors to participate in together. “For many of the kids, it was their first time learning to swim, most were fearful, but each one learned basic skills and had 1-on-1 instruction. We can’t fully express our gratitude to the LSA leadership and the volunteer swimmers who were simply incredible,” said Nancy Travers,

Amityville Board Happenings Technology, training and textbooks were a major focus of the Amityville Union Free School District’s Board of Education meeting on August 10th. There were also several staff appointments, including the hiring of a new principal. Following an update on the bond referendum that was passed in March, Carole Polney, the assistant superintendent

for technology and administrative services, gave the board a report on Amityville’s technology plan. She said that the district is finalizing how it would like to use the $2.2 million it is receiving from the state through the Smart Schools Bond Act. Polney said that the district’s priorities include the purchase of Chromebooks, upgrading wireless access points in all five schools, upgrading

interactive white boards and projectors, upgrading security, and network enhancements. Amityville’s long-term goal is a one-to-one initiative that would provide a device for every student to use both in school and at home. The board approved the district’s professional development plan, which supports teacher training. Mary O’Meara, the assistant superintendent

for curriculum and instruction, said that plan was developed collaboratively by faculty and administrators. She explained that it is important to give teachers a voice in determining what professional development opportunities are most meaningful for them, and overwhelmingly they are looking to learn how to increase student engagement and motivation.

At the recommendation of world language teachers at Amityville High School and Edmund W. Miles Middle School, a new French textbook series was approved. T’es Branché is a four-level series with online components and progress monitoring for students. It will support the district’s French program, which runs from seventh grade through high school Advanced Placement courses, as well as possible enrichment opportunities at the elementary level. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly provided an update on the summer programs, including the enrichment classes in July at Northwest Elementary School and the enrichment camp in early August at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School. Students participated in numerous hands-on projects and took several field trips. Staff will return to the district on Thursday, September 1st for Superintendent’s Conference Day where Dr. Kelly will be unveiling this year’s theme, “Achieving Excellence Together.” The keynote speaker will be Erik Wahl, the author of “Unthink,” a renowned graffiti artist and a consultant for many large corporations. Preparations are ongoing for the start of the school year on Sept. 6, and custodians have been working hard to get all five buildings ready. The Amityville Teachers

Association will hold its Back-to-School Bash on Monday, August 29th, at 3:30 p.m., at Park Avenue, and the Amityville Parent Teacher Council has its Back-to-School Party and Fundraiser set for Monday, September 12th, from 4-10 p.m., at Five Guys. Dr. Kelly said that the district’s calendar has been mailed home, and the electronic version is now available on the website. She encouraged residents to look at it for other upcoming events including back-to-school nights. Board President Terry Fulton announced that Dr. Kelly’s contract has been extended through June 30th, 2020. Dr. Kelly came to the district in 2008 as an assistant superintendent, and has been superintendent since 2014. She thanked the board for their vote of confidence and for the opportunity to continue to lead the district. The board of education will interview two candidates for the vacant trustee seat on August 29th. Fulton said that if there is consensus among the six board members, they would appoint a person to the Board instead of holding a special election. The board approved the appointment of several new teachers, support staff, mentors and coaches for the 2016-2017 school year, and hired Robyn Santiago as the Park Avenue principal.

The event provided the opportunity for newly appointed superintendents and newly elected school board trustees to mingle and share ideas with fellow educators from school districts across Nassau and Suffolk counties. I have often admired those who have the ability to see the good in every situation, those seemingly mystical individuals who appear to glide through life surrounded by an aura of peace and contentment, no matter what obstacles may be thrown their way. How it is that such an approach comes so naturally for some, yet is a constant struggle for others? Certainly, we all come from different circumstances, are faced with varying situations in our everyday lives – but, at our core, we are all made up of the same basic components. How we choose to deal with life’s variables is what makes us each unique. Do we meet them head on, or do we shy away? Is our tendency to be confrontational, or passive? Are we cynical or receptive to new ideas and methodologies?

Personally, I would brand myself a mixture of these facets, somewhat cynical, but yet still idealistic enough to remain hopeful that things will get better, over time, somehow. A positive mentality goes a long way, that is undeniable; and being open to possibilities will always seem like the better approach to putting up walls and allowing yourself to become consumed by the negativity surrounding you. Of course, sometimes we need a little help to implement these ideologies, and for that, I have sought out the practice of yoga over the last several years. Initially intended as a way to fill the void left by my “retirement” from 20 years of dancing, it has served as far more of a peaceful retreat from the world, an avenue to truly relax and decompress. Sure, it has its physical benefits as well, but the mental state it helps you to achieve is truly priceless.

The key, naturally, is to take this practice and apply it to those many hours spent outside the yoga studio, to transfer it into the “real” world beyond the self-made sanctuary. This can be found anywhere really, from a few hours soaking in the rays of the sun poolside, to walking along the shoreline with the ocean’s waves caressing your toes, to sitting on the edge of a dock taking in the last golden glow of sunset. You need only to remain open-minded, to see the beauty of each day, and to channel that positivity into a productive mentality. Easier said than done? Sure. But it can be done. It has been, by those who have chosen to cast aside the negative. My goal in this, my 34th year, is to embody the same characteristics those I admire do. And why not. Here’s to a new year…my new year. Plenty to smile about.

Guest speaker New York State Commissioner of Education MaryEllen Elia discussed the changes made and ongoing reviews of the Common Core Learning Standards, state curriculum, student assessments and teacher evaluations. In terms of student assessments, Elia said she believes that “assessments have a role in education and can work as an important tool to educate our children.” She also noted that the state is working

Throughout our lives, whenever we or someone close to us has a major event, i.e. birth, first birthday, Holy Communion, Graduation, Bar Mitzvah, Wedding, 25th Anniversary, holidays, etc., to commemorate such events, we celebrate with a ceremony. Some of the ceremonies are elaborate affairs that take months, if not years, to plan. Some are simple family only affairs but there is always a ceremony. For some reason, many have come to think the death of an individual does not call for any ceremony to commemorate or celebrate the life of the deceased. All too often I hear people say “I do not wish to be a burden or bother anyone, just cremate me and spread my ashes in the ocean,” or I hear the family come in and say “he was a simple person who did not want anything, just a cremation and bury the ashes in the garden.” Although these procedures are expedient, in my opinion, it is not the right thing to do for the survivors or the deceased. I am not saying that you must have a traditional funeral with a viewing and a funeral mass, but I am saying some type of ceremony should take place to commemorate and celebrate the life of the deceased. I have assisted in wonderful ceremonies that took place in the individual’s home with a small gathering of friends to reminisce about the deceased. I have helped families coordinate funeral services and catering for over 300 people in attendance. I have also provided information for the family to do their own personal ceremony without anyone else present. The harsh truth is that within three generations or less, no one will remember any of us, but we all should take at least a few moments out of our busy lives to remember those whom we loved and celebrate their lives. Missing Type Campaign New York Blood Center has joined blood donor organizations across 21 countries with the Missing Type campaign to highlight an almost 30% international drop in new blood donors compared to a decade ago. Every second, three people across the world receive a life changing blood transfusion, thanks to selfless donors who answer the call to donate. Participating blood services reported the number of people becoming donors and giving blood for the first time decreased by 27.6% since 2005. In the

United States, there is a particular need for new donors with O negative blood, the universal blood type, and donors of minority backgrounds such as Latino/Hispanic and African American community members. the campaign include actress Jamie Lee Curtis and rapper LL Cool J. NYBC and Lauren Shields, a sixteen-yearold blood recipient who needed life-saving blood transfusions during her heart transplant in 2009, rang the opening bell at the New York Stock Exchange in support of the Missing Type campaign last week on Tuesday, August 9th. Robert Purvis, Vice President of NYBC said, “New York Blood Center is very proud to be part of the international Missing Type campaign which has the power to raise

awareness globally on the everyday need for blood – especially O- which is the universal blood type and is always in short supply. The campaign couldn’t happen at a better time, as August is such a high vacation month! You can start donating blood across the U.S. from age sixteen, with a parent’s written consent. O negative blood type, the universal donor that is most reached for in the E.R., is found more commonly within the Latino/Hispanic and African American populations. However, these populations are

underrepresented in the donor pool, and with the increasing population rate, their communities are in need. “We need people to come out and support one another, by donating blood and your time, you are saving someone’s life, just like mine. Blood is needed for transfusions during organ transplants or when someone is undergoing chemotherapy. Without blood and people who donated I would not be here today,” said Shields.
