Back to School Drive Announced Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone today announced the Scott Martella Back-to-School Drive in partnership with the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless to provide supplies for underprivileged students before the start of the school year. The donation drive will be held in memory of Scott Martella, the former Communications Director for County Executive

Bellone who was tragically killed last year in a car accident on the Long Island Expressway. “Scott was a one of a kind public servant who deeply cared about giving back to those less fortunate in the community,” said Suffolk County Executive Bellone. “As a former Smithtown School Board member, Scott had a passion for giving students the tools they needed to

be successful. This event will help thousands of Long Island children while honoring Scott’s legacy and commitment he had to serving others.” Scott, who was 29 at the time of his passing, was widely considered a rising star in New York State government and public service. He impacted thousands of lives across Long Island and the state through his work

in public service. Before the age of 30, Scott had already begun to assemble a list of accomplishments that included being the youngest person to be elected to the Smithtown Board of Education. Earlier this year, Governor Cuomo established the Scott Martella Public Service Fellowship that is awarded every two years to a student, who like Scott,

is committed to public service and has a passion for helping others. The Fellow will serve for two years at the Department of Labor, where Scott had served for over a year, and will focus on community outreach, similar to the work that he championed throughout his career. Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory said: “Scott Martella was a truly special person

with a passion for giving back. The mark he left on Suffolk County will not soon be forgotten. I want to applaud County Executive Bellone and LICH for continuing the legacy Scott began. Far too many Long Island families struggle with poverty, and programs like this school supply drive help ensure that every child starts their school year off on the right

Participants in the high school program not only worked on gradelevel academic skills but participated in travel training by walking to the train station, riding the bus to the mall and learning how to use the computer to plan a trip. They also spent part of their days working at local businesses including retail stories, restaurants, gyms and yacht clubs. Family day was held during the last week of the program. There was basketball and soccer, an inflatable slide, water balloons and a picnic lunch. It also gave parents and guardians a chance to see the progress their children were making and learn strategies to support their academic, social and emotional growth at home.

More than 60 students in the Amityville Union Free School District received additional academic support during six weeks as they took part in the Extended Year Summer Program at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School. The program was open to students entering first grade through high school. There were fullday and half-day classes, depending upon needs. Site coordinator Yvette Carman said the purpose of the program was to help children avoid a regression in academic skills during summer vacation. “This program helps children develop socialization skills, and it helps maintain and grow the skills that they need help with,” Ms. Carman said. “Their days are full of meaningful learning activities.” Students received personalized attention in small classes led by certified teachers and support staff. Elementary school students worked on English language arts skills such as identifying site words and reading comprehension, and math skills like number recognition, addition and subtraction. The youngsters took ELA and math tests at the beginning and end of the program so teachers could monitor the progress they

I have always been a big believer in the concept of birthdays as beginnings, sort of personal new years, if you will, for each individual person. As such, my expectations of such days tend to aim for a level of unreasonable perfection, whether celebrating my own or that of a loved one; feeling that, somehow, this one day represents an omen of things to come over the next 364. This year, I decided to begin my day by driving to my favorite local sunrise spot, in the hope of catching one of those breathtakingly spectacular views first thing in the morning. All week, the weather looked to be beautiful, clear skies and sunshine all the way. Though it seemed exceptionally gray and gloomy as I headed south, I hoped the clouds would soon be accented by shooting rays of gold and pink.

Over 30 minutes later, as I aimlessly wandered the docks, attempting to capture “artsy” photographs of the still-muted surroundings, I wondered if this particular outing had been a colossal waste of time. Here I was, sleepily counting down to 6:03 a.m., when I could just as well have stayed under the covers at home. New beginnings, indeed. And then, just as I was about to cut my losses and head back to my pillow and blanket for the remainder of the morning, I heard a young boy who had been fishing at the other end of the dock with his father exclaim, “Dad, look at the sun! How cool is that?” Shifting my gaze over the horizon, I was shocked to see a huge red ball emerging out of the haze, nearly 10 minutes past “official” sunrise time. As I attempted to capture

the sight before me, I realized that pictures would never do it justice; and so, for once, I simply watched as the red turned to gold and the sun blanketed the bay with its shimmering rays. Too often do we become caught up in documenting a particular event, rarely allowing ourselves the time to take it all in, to truly become immersed in the experience. While one single day may not an entire year dictate, it can certainly set the tone in a symbolic manner; and on this, my 35th birthday, I was heartened to witness the gloom lift to reveal stunning beauty underneath. Patience is a virtue, as is appreciating the small moments, in the hope that they will lead to many more down the road. Here’s to day one being one small step in that direction.

Cultural Exchange In an effort to expose students to diversity among their peers, 40 students from Amityville

Memorial High School visited Islip High School to participate in a cultural exchange program. Islip’s

students had previously To kick off the cultural visited Amityville for a exchange, the Amityville similar event in December and Islip students enjoyed 2016. a breakfast and participated in various icebreaker

activities. Students from the two schools were paired, and the Amityville students shadowed the Islip students and attended

classes throughout the day. The event concluded with both sets of students sharing their experiences with the group.

Carolyn grew up in Amityville and graduated from Amityville Memorial High School in 1964. She was an artist, a caregiver and an animal advocate. Teachers provide many things to their students. In addition to an education, support and guidance, many teachers also feel compelled to enhance their classrooms with supplies they’ve purchased out-ofpocket. According to a poll of 1,500 teachers conducted by the educational resource Edutopia, 93 percent of teachers feel obligated or somewhat obligated to buy school supplies for their classrooms with their own

money. The Education Market Association says that virtually all teachers wind up paying out of pocket for supplies. The amounts spent annually can be upwards of $1,000 per teacher. In addition, not all of the teachers funding supplies work in low-income districts. A report published in early 2016 by the Center for Budget and Policy Priorities found that many states now provide less financial support

per student than they did before the recession took hold roughly nine years ago. Districts forced to work under tight budgets are increasingly outsourcing the costs of supplies to parents. When parents fail to provide supplies, teachers are bearing the brunt of the costs to avoid seeing their students go without necessary resources.
