Occasionally, they have businesses in the community that advertise in the magazine, and this money supports the food pantry, which allows them to shop for items when in need. The Town of Babylon Food Pantry is in dire need of your assistance. They are a small, emergency food pantry that operates by donation only. In these tough economic times, more and more families in the community are having difficulty making ends meet. The pantry was able to supply families with food prior to the storm; however, as you can imagine, their shelves are now bare. The pantry is asking concerned residents, organizations and scout troops to consider supporting them by holding a food drive to help restock the shelves. Pantry guests are give the opportunity to come once a month, and they are provided with as much food as possible. All that’s required from the guest is a photo ID, and them to fill out a card with their name, address, phone number and the number of people in the household.

Lindenhurst Village volunteer firefighter Harry “Pro” Prodromides was recently honored for his work educating the community about fire safety. He received the Firemen’s Association of the State of New York Fire Safety Educator of the Year Award, which recognizes volunteer firefighters for their “exceptional efforts in presenting fire prevention and safety education to residents in their community.” Prodromides, 86, has been with the Lindenhurst Fire Department since 1971. Although he no longer responds to fire calls, each October he lectures more than 3,500 students at six local elementary schools

on the importance of fire safety. he stresses planning evacuation routes and meeting points in case of a house fire. He also oversees fire drills at the schools to make sure the children know how to properly and quickly exit. Prodromides joined the department’s Fire Prevention Committee in 1993. He became its chairman in 195 and moved to improve and update the program. Prodromides previously worked as a photographer for Grumman. A Lindenhurst resident for 60 years, Prodromides served as an Army Air Forces serial photographer in Europe during WWII.

Birthdays. Some people love them, others despise that annual reminder that, like it or not, time is flying by – with or without you. Personally, I’ve always been a fan – not on the my-birthday-should-be-anational-holiday scale, but definitely as an occasion that I’ve looked forward to each year. It’s a time to celebrate with family and friends, and to show your appreciation to others when their special days come around. Too often, we get so caught up in our daily lives that we forget to acknowledge those who

play such an important role. Sure, those milestones can serve as not-so-subtle reminders that, hey, the clock is ticking – didn’t you have all sorts of things you wanted to accomplish by now?!? Better get to it! But I think those thoughts can creep in at any age, young, old or in between. We set hypothetical deadlines for when things “have” to be done, knowing full well that life rarely works out so perfectly. The best we can do is move forward, making a little progress along the way, pausing to celebrate and appreciate those things

As in all communicable diseases , a healthy, resistant host will not be susceptible. If your gum defenses are down and the invading organism is strong, infection can result. Vincent's Infection is common in college. The symptoms are: an especially foul mouth odor; chopping off of the tips of the gums between the teeth; a layer of gray, infected tissue covering raw under-surface of the mouth; fever in more serious cases; progressive destruction of gum tissue. It is important to get to a dentist as soon as possible. In the meantime, flush the mouth vigorously with a mixture of hydrogen peroxide and hot water - half and half. Do this every two hours.

Keeping Healthy At College It’s back-to-school time for college students. Avoiding the dreaded “freshman 15” weight gain is a challenge to some young students when faced for the first time with a daily array of healthy and not-so-healthy food choices. The American Heart Association (AHA) recommends that college students, and everyone, know their daily calorie needs and try to create a healthy eating plan that incorporates a few basic healthy eating goals. Weight Gain A Growing Problem More than 60% of adults in the US are either overweight or obese and the most significant weight changes occur in the 18-29 year old age group. Rebuilding Together and the American Red Cross have joined forces to help bring nearly 90 homes devastated by Hurricane Sandy back to safe and healthy housing conditions. Thanks to a $2.25 million grant from the American Red Cross to Rebuilding Together, these low-income homeowners can look forward to rebuilding their lives and returning to their communities. Rebuilding Together’s local affiliates and volunteers in New York City, Long Island, Bergen County and Jersey City

Most of the homes will require modifications and repairs that may address electrical and plumbing issues, flooring, drywall, appliance replacements, painting, basement and exterior rehabilitation with the goal of ensuring all of the homes are safe, healthy and livable. Those eligible for services include low-income families, senior citizens, persons with disabilities, and veterans. “We greatly appreciate the opportunity to collaborate with the Red Cross in the long term recovery of communities devastated by Hurricane Sandy,” said John L. Fiegel, interim president and CEO of Rebuilding Together. “Senior citizens and low-income homeowners are among the most vulnerable in times of disaster and we are honored to be a partner with the Red Cross to help nearly 90 families get back on their feet.”

As of July 2013, hardworking Rebuilding Together affiliates in New York City, Long Island, Bergen County, Jersey City, and Essex County have already completed more than 200 projects, assisting more than 375 families or individuals with the help of over 2,000 volunteers. “Recovery from a storm of this size takes time and help from many different organizations, not just the Red Cross, and we are pleased to support the programs of Rebuilding Together and other partners, and to continue to work with them to help people with their recovery,” said Jerry DeFrancisco, president of Humanitarian Services at the Red Cross. “We can help people and communities in a more comprehensive way when we pool our resources and services together in a coordinated way. This not only speeds recovery, but helps us engage the entire community in building the resilience we need as we face disasters of this type in the future.”

When a child living on Long Island becomes sick or injured and requires the long term assistance of a ventilator for breathing, there is at present no local comprehensive program to support them. These children must be relocated miles from home, often out of state for their care. Last year, Catholic Health Services received a HEAL grant of 3.2 million dollars to begin development of a cross continuum of care. Catholic Health Services hopes to achieve a continuum of care for these special patients through collaboration between its members. A 10-bed pediatric rehabilitation unit at St. Charles Hospital will provide initial acute rehabilitation for children who recently experienced a catastrophic event with a goal of returning them home with support from a pediatric team of Catholic Home. Children unable to return home will be transferred to long-term care at Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Center (OLC). OLC’s pediatric ventilator
