Although, come to think of it, I actually had my own such experience with a misspelled sign back in high school, when the school district commissioned their annual display saluting the year’s Valedictorian, Salutatorian and other such honors. My excitement at seeing my name painted on the giant wooden signs marking both ends of town was slightly marred when we drove by to see the following on graduation morning: Valedictorian ~ Jamie Lee Ryan. Just a word to the wise – the bigger the structure, and the more publicly distributed the document, the more “second looks” (and third, and fourth) any wording should be given. (As I re-read this column one more time!)

As an editor, it would stand to reason that I have a bit of a pet peeve when it comes to misspelled words and poor grammar. But understandably, everyone makes mistakes from time to time. Lately, though, it seems that these errors have been featured front and center on a number of occasions. First, there was the faux pas of Hempstead School District’s “Summer Reading List,” which included such literary classics as The Great Gypsy, The Canterbury Tale and The Lovely Bone, as well as works by such esteemed authors as Charlotte Bonte (Jane Eyre) and George Ornell (Animal Farm). As many newspapers and social media sites jumped all over the errors, the sense of irony was overwhelming – a

document designed to promote literacy among the youth, seemingly put together by someone who could have used a couple more years fine-tuning his/her English skills… and this generated by one of the poorest performing districts on Long Island. Perhaps it was merely a test to see how many people would pick out the mistakes? And then, just last week came this: a new sign on the Robert Moses Causeway directing drivers to “Jonse” Beach. The sign was hung recently on the southbound side, causing many drivers to do a double take. Clearly, most residents can manage to overlook the typo in locating one of the nation’s most popular, landmark beaches – but that’s not the point. Wouldn’t someone glance at such a giant structure before displaying it? Or are massive

Take out Alzheimer’s Disease with that “Winner Shot.” On Friday, August 16th, Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center, Inc. will host its 2nd Annual Berts Tennis Fundraiser, which will be held at SPORTIME on 175 Merrick Rd. in Lynbrook from 7 to 10 p.m. Families can come play tennis while also enjoying food, raffles, and prizes. The cost for Berts Tennis will be $45 per person. All profits will be donated to the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center and any other donations will be included to help achieve the organization’s goal of a future free from Alzheimer’s disease. The ADRC is also asking participants to bring any pictures of family members or friends fighting the disease so they can be displayed on the Memory board. The Annual Snapper Derby Fishing Tournament will be held on Saturday, August 18th and Sunday, August 19th, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Captree State Park. The purpose of this event is to encourage children to fish; however all ages are welcome. There is no entry fee; however, a Vehicle Use fee will be in effect. Fishing locations are throughout all of Captree State Park. Equipment prizes for 1st through 5th places will be awarded in the following age groups: 7 years old and younger; 8-12 years of age and 1316 years of age. Under a clear, sunny sky, the Amityville Farmer’s Market had the official Grand Opening on Saturday, July 13th. This year, the Market is being held on Saturday mornings from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. On hand were Mayor Jim Wandell, as well as trustees Jessica Bernius, Kevin Smith and Nick LaLota. Many members

of the Bay Village Civic Association joined them and BVCA president Joan Donnison in the ribbon cutting ceremony. Prior to the photo op, NY State Assemblyman Bob Sweeney joined them at their booth. A new farm from Mattituck joined them, along with a vendor with honey, preserves and other specialty items. Raffle tickets were sold for a large basket valued at $100. The proceeds were being donated to the victim of a recent house fire in the Village. Due to the sudden downpour at the end of the event, the raffle was postponed to the following Saturday. One of the benefits of being a funeral director is that I get to listen to many learned clergymen. I would like to share with you part of a eulogy recently presented by an insightful clergyman. The eulogy started out the same as many eulogies I had heard before. The deceased was praised for all the good he had done in this world. The immediate family and friends were assured the deceased was in a better place now void of suffering and filled with joy. Then he spoke of the relationship the deceased had with his family and friends. He said although your loved one’s life has ended, your relationship with him will never end. He will always love you and you will always love him. His relationship with you is like a stone thrown in a quiet ocean, We will never know on what shore the ripples will land and what affect they will have on that shore. Like your relationship with the deceased, you will never really know how great of an affect the deceased has had not only on you but on your children and your children’s children. The clergyman went on to say that you should continue to think of the deceased as a source of comfort, joy, strength, wisdom and love. Because just as if a person would move to a new town to prepare a home for his family to come, you would continue to think of him as being with you. The deceased has simply gone to find a new home and is awaiting your arrival. Although the deceased has died, his thoughts, love and your relationship with him will live with you forever. The clergyman concluded by saying all people and all relationships affect our lives forever and never end. Just as the stones thrown in the ocean affect the ocean, some relationships greatly affect us, some only to a minimal amount, but they all affect us and all relationships stay with us forever and affect our lives every day. 260411N0814

Miracle Foundation Grant

The Miracle Foundation provided a $15,000 grant to support the Dominican Sisters of Amityville’s (DSA) Medical Massage

Program for cancer patients. The DSA Medical Massage program led by Sister Virginia Connors, OP, LMT, CLT ( Sister

Ginny) provides massage therapy to economically disadvantaged cancer survivors; promoting the dignity of all races and

creeds who, because of their insurance status and lack of financial resources, can not avail themselves of such holistic treatments and services. “Sister Ginny’s program is offering relaxation and healing to many people battling the effects of cancer through this unique massage therapy program,” explained Joe Castronovo, Miracle Foundation President. “We are pleased to support Sister Ginny’s efforts with this special grant that will enable more people to avail themselves of this beneficial treatment,” said Patti Tenaglia, Co-Founder of The Miracle Foundation. The DSA Medical Massage Program provides relief from the physical, psychological

and emotional challenges of cancer via therapeutic massage. Research supports medical massage as a non-invasive therapy that increases blood supply to skeletal muscles and other body components while stimulating the nervous system. Therapeutic massage is used in various medical treatment programs as a way to reduce symptoms, improve a patient’s ability to cope, and enhance one’s quality of life, which is often compromised by aggressive cancer treatments. According to Sister Ginny, “Cancer patients frequently use therapeutic massage to improve symptom control and to increase a personal sense of well being, especially

following radiation and chemotherapy treatment.” “There is a growing waiting list of cancer survivors seeking relief from the effects of pre-and post surgery, chemotherapy/radiation, and the psychological trauma of cancer for which medical massage treatment has proven beneficial,” said Sister Ginny. “The generous grant from The Miracle Foundation will enable the Dominican Sisters of Amityville to continue the Medical Massage Program which promotes healing from the effects of cancer for all those who could not otherwise afford treatment,” she continued.

Members and friends of the Bay Village Civic Association toasted summer on Tuesday, July 9th.
