Standing Against Heroin The Lindenhurst Memorial Library will hold a rally on Saturday, August 23rd, to bring more awareness to the heroin epidemic in Lindenhurst and Suffolk County. Suffolk County and Lindenhurst have seen the increase in heroin use soar over the last few years, especially among teens and young adults. The rally will be held in front of the Library from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. Lindenhurst Memorial Library has engaged in a public awareness campaign, primarily using its online and social media pages, since the beginning of the year. “We’ve reached thousands of people with our virtual resources,” stated library director Peter Ward. Why not? We spend more than enough of our time going through the motions of the daily grind. We deserve at least that much of a reprieve. As for getting older, age is, truly, nothing but a number. It’s a state of mind, dependent upon the person, the day of the week, the phase of the moon… and, considering I’ve been
It’s that special time of year again – well, special to me – three days until my birthday, the so-called “reset button” that comes around once every 365 days to remind me that, yes, I am one entire year older and (hopefully) just a little wiser. Some people seem to dread such milestones, seeing them as unnecessary celebrations, just another day on the calendar to cast aside. Of course, there are also those who feel the occasion should be acknowledged as some sort of national holiday… Me, I
mistaken for anywhere from 18 to 25 years old, it must be a characteristic that’s not necessarily apparent to others! We should all take a moment – even if it is, literally, just one moment – each year, on our respective birthdays, to acknowledge the fact that we are each special and important in our own little ways, within our own immediate circles, and that every year is but another opportunity to expand upon that imprint. We are all works in progress. So blow out the candles, make a wish, and celebrate the next step of the journey.

I recently spoke with a woman who did not want her children to be bothered when she died. She wanted to pay for a direct cremation without any services or viewing and she did not want to discuss it with her children. She wanted to make sure that she would be cremated before her children could get here from out of state. I suggested she first discuss this matter with her children. She said it was only her decision. I then asked her what she would do if heaven forbid one of her children died and if they were cremated before she could say good-bye. She simply said she would never talk to her daughter or son in laws again. She then looked at me picked up the papers put them in her pocketbook and said I will be back after I discuss this matter with all my children. Some people do not ever wish to see the person after they die. They want to remember the person alive. Some people need the opportunity for closure and need to view their loved one before interment or cremation. Whatever, your wishes are I simply ask you discuss the matter with those who will suffer most after you are gone. Remember the funeral is more for them than it is for you.
