Alex Diaz, a rising senior at Amityville Memorial High School, has been selected to the National Association for Music Education’s All-National symphonic orchestra. He is the first student ever from Amityville be named to a national music honor ensemble. The selection process is highly competitive, as thousands of students from across the country vied for limited spots in All-National honor ensembles. A viola player, Alex completed an extensive application along with submitting recorded

musical auditions and teacher recommendations. Alex has become one of the most accomplished musicians in Amityville history, adding an AllNational selection to previous All-State and AllCounty honors. He has performed in ensembles through the New York State School Music Association, the Suffolk County Music Educators Association, the Long Island String Festival Association, the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra and the Knights/ Tilles Center String Orchestra Convocation. The NAfME All-National

Music Festival and Conference is tentatively scheduled to take place in Orlando from Nov. 5-8, based on state and national health guidelines. The 2020 symphonic orchestra will be conducted by accomplished orchestra director and teacher Nobuyoshi Yasuda. “Congratulations to Alex, his family and his past and present music teachers on this outstanding accomplishment,” said Director of Fine Arts Dr. Fran Fernandez. “This is a well-deserved selection for a very talented musician.”

How to motivate visitors to maintain social distancing upon entering the Museum of American Armor? The Armor Museum has enlisted the Army. The Museum of American Armor, 1303 Round Swamp Road, Old Bethpage, has teamed up with Dr. Erik Villard, Digital Military Historian at the U.S. Army Center of Military History, to present his innovative reinvention of motivational posters first created by the War Department during World War II. From G.I.s prepared to throw hand sanitizers (as opposed to hand grenades), to a masked Uncle Sam leading a charge against COVID, the posters will be situated throughout the museum, adjacent to its tanks, artillery pieces, and uniformed mannequins. IS CREMATION THE RIGHT CHOICE FOR YOU AND YOUR FAMILY Today, the question of whether to cremate or not is a real dilemma for many families. I have always written in these articles and explained to the families I have served that funeral arrangements should be discussed amongst the family long before an illness or death occurs. I have also told the families I have served that the funeral ceremony is primarily for the survivors not just for the deceased. It is my belief the deceased has paid their dues, are at peace, void of pain and it is the survivors that must carry on. There’s no getting around it, in general cremation is less expensive than burial. You do not have to purchase a grave which costs between $750 and $3,000, you can rent a casket instead of purchasing a casket, cremation fees are $355 as opposed to grave openings which range from $755 to $2,300. Many of you think cremation means the deceased is taken from the place of death directly to a crematory without any viewing or services. This type of service is called a “Direct Cremation” and is the least expensive type of funeral service available. However, you can have a cremation and still have a traditional funeral service with a wake and religious service the only difference being that instead of going to a cemetery for a burial you go to a crematory. It seems that older people don’t want to burden their family after they die and ask that the least expensive service be provided for them. But some of these folks need to understand that we, the children, grandchildren, brothers, sisters and friends may want to say goodbye and that a funeral service with a wake even if the casket is closed and a religious service although more expensive is not a burden but the beginning of the grieving process. I am not advocating cremations over burials nor am I advocating burials over cremations. I have seen beautiful and meaningful memorial services conducted after a direct cremation. I have witnessed families reunited at a wake and funeral service. I have known families who have honored the deceased’s wishes but regretted the decision for years to come because they did not have the chance to say goodbye. What I am advocating is that you talk to each other about the type of funeral service that will be comforting to all the members of your family.
