Amityville Student Accepted Into National Honor Society Shaakirah Nazim-Harris from the Amityville UFSD, who studies performing arts at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA), was inducted into the International Thespian Society (ITS) recently. For nearly a century, the ITS has been honoring student achievement. The society’s four key principles are Pride, Affirmation, Confidence and Inspiration. As members, students receive national recognition, have access to a variety of resources, and are invited to participate in state and national events, workshops, college and scholarship auditions. Among its legendary ranks are Kathy Bates, John Goodman, Tom Hanks, Goldie Hawn, Christina Hendricks, Barbara Hershey, Val Kilmer and Cloris Leachman, to name a few.

The county has made about 8.5 acres of land available for them, which their railroad operates on. In fulﬁllment of the public trust use of park land, Long Island Live Steamers hosts visitor rides on our Public Run Days typically scheduled for the second and last Sundays of each month from the middle of May through the end of October. The hours of operation during a public run day are 10:30AM-3PM. There is no charge for rides on Run Days, however they accept donations of any size. Their operation is solely funded by donations. Although thousands of visitors enjoy visiting and riding on their railroad every year, most Long Islanders have either never heard of this organization, or if they have, have yet to visit them on one of their Public Run Days. Long Island Live Steamers may well be the best kept secret on Long Island. Almost everything you will see, ride on, or otherwise enjoy during your visit to Long Island Live Steamers was built, delivered, installed and maintained by their members.

Besides their ground track, they also have a dual gauge high line which features an elevated track, which runs through the forest. Rider Rules: For the Ground Line track, kids must be able to walk on their own in order to ride. For The high line track, riders must be at least 40” Tall to ride. Looking to host a birthday party at LI Live Steamers? You can! Reservations must be made to reserve a birthday party with the LI Live Steamers, however there is no limit to how many people can attend. Attendees can bring their own food and/ or cake (pizza parties are popular) and the organization provides picnic tables, that when sitting at you will have a great view of the action as multiple trains pass by! Cares/Harry Chapin Foodbank as part of his ongoing mission to further understand the needs of his district. Senator Brooks met with Program Coordinator Marc Leonelli and several other members of the L.I. Cares staff to discuss their ongoing fight against hunger and the multileveled logistical operations they oversee daily. As part of his visit, Senator Brooks also spent time assisting with the vital work of L.I. Cares, stacking shelves and putting together care packages for customers who came through. L.I. Cares was founded in

1980 by singer-songwriter and activist Harry Chaplin to assist Long Island’s hungry and food insecure populations. In the 40 years since its founding, it has done that and more, working tirelessly to help countless Long Islanders every year. L.I. Cares distributes tens of millions of pounds of food and supplies annually to those in need. The life-saving work of this organization has resulted in the distribution of more than 1.4 million meals, helping more than 230,000 Long Island residents feed themselves and their families. “Seeing first-hand the work that L.I. Cares does day in and day out was a sobering experience,” said Senator Brooks. “It is easy to look past problems

when you are fortunate enough not to experience them yourself, but seeing the extent to which food insecurity and hunger hurts so many in our community made clear how serious of an issue this is on Long Island. I am thankful to those at L.I. Cares for allowing me the opportunity to visit their facility and for the crucial work they do.
