My Life in a Bowl By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

Buddy the Betta here… Jamie asked me to fill in for her this week, since she’s been receiving so many reader inquiries regarding my wellbeing. Well, here I am, as requested, in all my turquoisefinned glory, excited to pen my very first guest column. Life in a bowl can be confining, but my human has made it as comfy a home as possible, decking it out with multi-colored gravel and – my favorite feature of all – a tiny plastic plant. Let me tell you, hours of fun can be had squeezing in between those tiny branches, nibbling on the stems and attempting to dig through the gravel to uproot and redecorate. Hours. Endless fun, I tell you. The one complaint I have is

the feeding schedule. I mean, sure she comes and says good morning and everything, but the least she could do is give me a rundown of her schedule, an ETA on dinner… Doing all those laps around my bowl works up an appetite. Back and forth, back and forth – and she wonders why she finds me chewing on the plant at least once a day! As soon as I see that light go on, I know my human is home. Oh boy, oh boy! It’s feeding time! Depending on her level of generosity, I usually find four or five flakes floating atop the water. Depending on my level of hunger, I either inhale them all in one gulp; or, if I’m in a playful mood, I’ll stalk each pellet from every angle, before pouncing and thoroughly chewing and digesting it.

Life is good. In fact, my human keeps telling me that my “half-birthday” is coming, whatever that is, on the same day as her birthday. I’m not certain what that means, but I sure hope there’s cake! I see her unpacking all sorts of goodies and preparing colorful meals when she comes home – but she never shares! I sit with my face pressed against the glass, hoping for just a taste, but alas… counting down the days until this alleged milestone. Til then, it’s been fun filling in for the human. Hopefully, she’ll be back next week so I can go back to my busy schedule of shifting gravel and nibbling on any fingers that happen to find their way into my bowl. A Betta’s life isn’t as easy as it looks. This is Buddy, signing off…

This past Friday, Legislator Leslie Kennedy hosted the first Free Women’s Self Defense Classes located at Empire State Karate facility located in Smithtown. This community awareness event specialized in teaching women of all age’s proper methods of selfprotection. The class was led by Suffolk County Police Department Officer Susan Levaglia and Empire State Karate instructor Joyce Santamaria. These two distinguished women have made great strides in teaching women all

throughout Suffolk County the importance of safety through selfdefense techniques. Leslie and several other Suffolk County women were esteemed students in this two-hour self-defense session; they were taught a variety of physical and mental defense approaches that enhance personal safety in dangerous situations. After having participated hands on in this class, Leslie stated: “the instructions and practice in self-defense tonight were both amazing and unforgettable! We will definitely be doing

The Firemen’s Association of the State of New York (FASNY) has announced an October 2nd application deadline for tuition reimbursement through their historic educational initiative, the Higher Education Learning Plan (HELP). This statewide community college tuition reimbursement program is geared towards recruiting and retaining volunteer firefighters throughout New York State. “The FASNY HELP program has benefitted hundreds of dedicated firefighters serving communities across the State. In addition to helping meet the staffing needs of local departments, a better educated firefighter is simply a better firefighter. For the student volunteers and the fire departments, this is the very definition of a ‘win-win’ situation,” said

FASNY President Robert McConville. Under FASNY HELP, any active volunteer firefighter, in good standing, and who hasn’t already achieved a college degree is eligible for up to 100% tuition reimbursement. The reimbursement is in exchange for maintaining good grades and fulfilling service requirements in one of New York’s volunteer fire companies. There is no restriction on the type of academic courses that the HELP student-volunteer can pursue, either on a full-time or part-time basis. FASNY HELP also covers online courses taken through Empire State College. FASNY HELP funds can be utilized for tuition costs incurred in the Fall 2015 and Spring 2016 semesters. Eligible student-volunteers must maintain acceptable levels

of training and volunteer activity while attending school and fulfill a service requirement after they complete their course of study. They must attend a chartered NYS community college; Empire State College’s inclusion in the program has expanded students’ location options. Due to a variety of factors, many volunteer fire departments are experiencing the need to recruit and retain more members. Tuition reimbursement can be an effective incentive for people to volunteer in their local community. The deadline to apply for tuition reimbursement for the upcoming semester is October 2nd. While planning the annual Summer Cocktail Party for Bay Village Civic Association members, their Board anticipated the usual attendance. What had always been a casual event at the Bull Dog Grille turned into something more, due to the unanticipated retirements of Amityville’s two top police officers. With the announcements of the retirement of APD Chief Don Dobby, followed by the retirement of Lieutenant Gerry Gralton, an invitation was extended to them to attend. Certificates of Recognition were to be presented by BVCA president, Joan Donnison. As word spread to various political officials, more accolades came in. Assemblywoman Kimberly Jeanne-Pierre, represented by Tyler Parks, awarded them a proclamation for their years of service. This was followed by proclamations

from Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer and Councilman Tony Martinez. There was a genuine feeling of gratitude and respect for the officers’ many years of service to the Village of Amityville. Several heart felt references were made regarding their leadership during Superstorm Sandy. Supervisor Schaffer was particularly thankful for that. New York State Senator Michael Venditto also congratulated the officers on their retirements, while wishing the BVCA members a happy, safe summer. Trustees Jessica Bernius, Kevin Smith and Dennis Siry were also present. Trustee Smith offered his congratulations and appreciation as a former Fire Department Chief for their collaboration with the department and their many years of service to the Village.

The Suffolk County Vanderbilt Museum has just received a second substantial gift from the Roy M. Speer Foundation, a $100,000 grant to continue the extensive restoration, modernization and technological update of its Stoll Wing wildanimal habitats. The gift is a continuation of the foundation’s initial gift of $100,000 in 2012. The new phase will include the installation of interactive, educational, touch-screen kiosks with downloadable narration for each of the eight animal dioramas; restoration of the 15 preserved animals; and building safety improvements. The first restoration phase included installation of a heating, ventilating and air-conditioning system to ensure visitor comfort and preservation of the specimens. An artist and a taxidermist who undertake major projects for the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) were hired to create three new background paintings

for the dioramas and to restore and preserve 30 mounted animal heads. The grant honors Charles H. Stoll (18871988) of Long Island, a museum trustee and benefactor who was a noted explorer, naturalist and big-game hunter. He created and financed the strikingly detailed animal dioramas that feature wild game he and his wife Merle brought back from around the world between 1922 and 1969. Stoll’s granddaughter, Lynnda Speer, through the Roy M. Speer Foundation, made the gift to the museum. Her late husband Roy M. Speer (1932-2012), established the foundation in 1987. “Stoll and Vanderbilt were both members of the Explorers Club,” said Stephanie Gress, director of curatorial affairs for the Vanderbilt, “a distinction reserved for the most adventurous among us.” That’s significant, she added, because the only addition to the museum was achieved by someone

of Vanderbilt’s caliber. Lance Reinheimer, executive director of the Vanderbilt, said, “The Speer Foundation’s generous ongoing support will enable us to complete this phase of the restoration and the preservation of the specimens. Like Mr. Vanderbilt, Stoll had an educational purpose in mind when he collected animals and brought them home to Long Island. Although it is unclear whether the two men ever met, their interests and expeditions had remarkable parallels. They also shared a love of the natural world and a deep commitment to public education.” The Stolls collected animals in Africa, Alaska, the American West, the Arctic, British Honduras (now Belize), Canada, India and Nova Scotia. Specimens range from a blue wildebeeste, polar bear, walrus and Cape buffalo, to a kudu, ostrich, jaguar, Bengal tiger and leopard. Stoll hired Dr. James

L. Clark, a renowned taxidermist for the AMNH, to supervise the creation of the Stoll Wing dioramas. Clark chose accomplished taxidermists and background artists from among his colleagues. Opened to the public in 1970, the Stoll Wing complements the naturalhistory collections, marine museum and Habitat animal dioramas built by William K. Vanderbilt II -- all key elements of the museum’s education programs. Stoll was also a lawyer and Nassau County judge whose boyhood dream, his granddaughter said, was to become an explorer. He realized that dream when he financed and led the famous 1928 StollMcCracken Siberian Arctic Expedition, undertaken under the auspices of the American Museum of Natural History. Stoll joined the Vanderbilt Museum Board of Trustees in 1967, was elected chairman in 1971, and served until 1975.

Cremation Practices And The Catholic Church

We thought it might be helpful to remind you of some information concerning the Catholic Church’s teaching and viewpoint on the practice of cremation. As you know, the Church does permit the practice of cremation as long as it is not being done as a direct contradiction to Catholic belief in the resurrection of the body on the last day. “Cremated remains” is the preferred term which gives more dignity to the mortal remains of the Christian, rather than the slang term “cremains.” The cremated remains may even be brought into church and the Funeral Mass may take place in the presence of the cremated remains, if for some reason cremation takes place before the Mass is celebrated. However, the Church has some very specific rules concerning the respect and dignity to be accorded to the cremated remains. Article 417 in the Order of Christian Funerals tells us this — please take note of this very carefully: “The cremated remains of a body should be treated with the same respect given to the human body from which they come. This includes the use of a worthy vessel to contain the ashes, the manner in which they are carried, the care and attention to appropriate placement and transport, and the final disposition. The cremated remains should be buried in a grave or entombed in a mausoleum or columbarium. The practice of scattering cremated remains on the sea, from the air, or on the ground, or keeping cremated remains in the home of a relative or friend of the deceased are not the reverent disposition that the Church requires. Whenever possible, appropriate means for recording with dignity the memory of the deceased should be adopted, such as a plaque or stone which records the name of the deceased.” So, to put it bluntly, one must do with the cremated remains what one would do with the body of the deceased: they must be buried or entombed. It is not appropriate to scatter the ashes or to keep them at home, nor is it acceptable to divide up the cremated remains into different pieces of jewelry for the family. I’m not kidding about that last one — the funeral industry will actually offer this as an option, but that is completely against Catholic teaching, and we should not participate in asuch a practice. Should you be thinking about cremation for yourself or for a family member, please be sure to follow the Catholic Church’s teaching about this practice, and if you have any questions please feel free to contact us.

WOUNDED WARRIOR SUPPORT - Staff members and volunteers from Southside Hospital worked at water stations and helped otherwise care for the riders who took part in last Friday Wounded Warrior bike ride. Roots of Learning As part of their gardening unit, secondgrade students in the Copiague School District summer enrichment program explored different elements of the plant life cycle. To kick off the fourweek summer program, teachers Terri Alzmann, Katie Dutton and Karilyn Fincke led the students in planting beanstalk seeds in a Styrofoam cup with soil. With the help of water

and sunlight, the students observed and measured their beanstalks as they grew. Students also created a vegetable garden outside the school building. In the garden, students planted a variety of vegetable seeds including peppers, carrots, basil, cilantro, and green beans. Although the vegetables were not ready to be harvested at the end of the program, students had the opportunity to

make pico de gallo, which they learned could be made from the vegetables that were planted. “We have the students plant the garden at the beginning of summer school so they can see the process of the plant life cycle,” said Dutton. “We like to teach them that they can create a sustainable garden in the future that could provide them with food.”
