The members often compose their own songs, which have been featured on Country Current recordings, including Country Current LIVE and Sugarland Run. Their music has been heard on radio stations around the nation, and they have been featured on XM satellite radio.

as recommended in the owner’s manual and having engine performance problems such as rough idling corrected. • Use windows and airconditioning wisely. At highway speeds, it’s better to keep windows up (and air-conditioning on, if wanted) to reduce air drag. But turn off the A/C in stop-and-go traffic to save fuel.

The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives and they help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). RTLI was founded in 1992 by a small group of volunteers that were eager to help needy homeowners. Today they have one paid employee and 200 volunteers, which are the heart and soul of their organization. Their experienced volunteers perform the vast majority of the work they do and they come from all walks of life. This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-ups and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. Seeing improvement in the lives of Long Island residents is truly what makes all the hard-work from this organization worth it. With the support of all of their many volunteers and partners, Rebuilding Together Long Island has become a wellregarded organization, recognized for their work with rehabbing houses, the building and installation of ramps for those in need and their involvement with communities and organizations that span across Long Island. They need your help to keep up the momentum! There are four main ways you can get involved with their organization: 1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or

Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great team building and community leadership opportunity for your employees. 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! A Milestone Moment Hard work and perseverance are the keys to success, speakers told third graders at Northwest Elementary School’s moving up ceremony on June 24. The students, who comprise Amityville Memorial High School’s Class of 2028, celebrated their achievements over the past three years as they grew as readers, writers, mathematicians, scientists, artists, musicians and thinkers. Principal Kathleen Hyland said that this group of students holds a special place in heart as they entered Northwest as first graders the same year she came to the school. She explained that it is has been a pleasure watching them

grow through so many “wonderful educational experiences.” Ms. Hyland reminded students that mistakes are part of the learning process and should never deter them from trying to achieve their goals. “You can accomplish anything if you’re willing to work for it,” she said. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly not only emphasized the value of hard work, but also spoke about the importance of good character. She reminded students to always be courteous, kind, respectful and responsible. While the summer vacation is well deserved after a prosperous school year, Dr. Kelly encouraged

students to keep their minds sharp by going to the local library and checking out books. The ceremony included musical selections by the students including “Count on Me” and “Roar,” led by music teacher Roxanne Tannenbaum. Dr. Kelly and Ms. Hyland both recognized Ms. Tannenbaum, who is retiring, for her years of dedication to the students. Class by class, the 219 third graders were called up to the stage to receive their moving up certificates, where they exchanged handshakes, high-fives and hugs with Ms. Hyland, Assistant Principal Sonia Rodrigo and their teachers.

Making Coding Connections As early as kindergarten, children in the Amityville Union Free School District are learning about computer programming. Northeast Elementary School librarian Tina Smith recently introduced a robotics unit through the use of childfriendly technology. on the floor, children have to figure out the series of maneuvers to get the robot from one point to another. They add connecting pieces to the electronic caterpillar that direct it to either go straight, turn right or turn left. Once that is complete, a student pushes the start button and the robot moves based on the sequence the children determined. Sometimes the robot

wouldn’t reach its destination, or it would go too far, and students would discuss how they should change the pieces. Ms. Smith said that the coding unit teaches students lifelong problem-solving skills. “That’s what happens to scientists,” she said. “They keep trying and trying and trying until they get it right.”

Creating A Personal Funeral Service: Part Four Throughout our lives whenever we or someone close to us has a major event, i.e. birth, first birthday, Holy Communion, Graduation, Bar Mitzvah, Wedding, 25th Anniversary, holidays, etc. to commemorate such events we celebrate with a ceremony. Some of the ceremonies are elaborate affairs that take months if not years to plan, some are simple family only affairs but there is always a ceremony. For some reason, many have come to think the death of an individual does not call for any ceremony to commemorate or celebrate the life of the deceased. All too often I hear people say “I do not wish to be a burden or bother anyone just cremate me and spend my ashes in the ocean” or I hear the family come in and say “he was a simple person who did not want anything just a cremation and bury the ashes in the garden.” Although these procedures are expedient, in my opinion it is not the right thing to do for the survivors or the deceased. I am not saying that you must have a traditional funeral with a viewing and a funeral mass but I am saying some type of ceremony should take place to commemorate and celebrate the life of the deceased. I have helped families coordinate funeral services and catering for over 300 people in attendance. I have also provided information for the family to do their own personal ceremony without anyone else present. The harsh truth is within three generations or less no one will remember any of us but we all should take at least a few moments out of our busy lives to remember those whom we loved and celebrate their lives. new school year, board members heard an update from representatives from BBS Architects and Park East Construction on capital projects from the $69.9 million facilities bond approved by voters in March 2019. The new windows have been installed at Edmund W. Miles Middle School and the project will be complete as soon as all window treatments are in place. Work is progressing on the addition to Amityville Memorial High School, which will include new classrooms, science labs,

indoor athletic complex and expanded cafeteria. The concrete slabs have been poured on the first and second floors, and the masonry walls are under construction. Electrical, plumbing and mechanical work also continues. A majority of the masonry reconstruction work is complete at the Park North Administration Building. The concrete ramp and stairway have been poured at the back

entrance, and the handrail needs to be installed. At Northwest Elementary School, the site fencing and windscreen are now in place around the construction site for an addition to the south side of the building, which will include classrooms and small gymnasium. Work is also underway at Northeast Elementary School for an ADAcompliant bathroom in the nurse’s office.
