Most of the volunteers at the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Program are women and men who have had breast cancer and now are helping others cope with this disease. Here’s what they have to say about their reasons for volunteering: Cindy Arroyo of Rockville Centre, has been a volunteer for six years: “I called the hotline when I was diagnosed in 2006 and wanted to give back by being a volunteer.” Lydia Clarke of Lynbrook was diagnosed with breast cancer 12 years ago and volunteered shortly afterward. “I have a positive outlook and feel I have a lot to share with others. I want to help others through a difficult time.” Catherine Olsson of Glen Head is an eight-year survivor and a volunteer for five years: “When you’re diagnosed with breast cancer your life in every aspect changes. The most important piece is hope - when you phone the hotline you hear a

QUESTION: Some patients say that the clasps of a removable partial denture can adversely affect the health of the abutment teeth (the end-teeth they clasp for retention). Is this true? ANSWER: While it is true that the health of these teeth may begin to deteriorate, it is due to sloppy habit rather than the fact they are being used to retain the denture. It is vital to keep your bridge thoroughly clean. Try to keep it as shiny clean as when you got it. Clear clasps do not cause decay on clean teeth! If you have been taught to use a "path of insertion", please use it. Do not bite or force your denture into place. Should your pre-denture chewing habits cause difficulties for you, revise them. To remove stains, soak the denture once a week in a solution of one part vinegar and two parts warm water. If tartar has built up on your denture, it means that your daily cleaning habits need to be improved. If possible, brush and clean your denture after eating. From the office of

Older teens with AD/HD have a common set of challenges different from children and/or adults and their needs are unique and not always recognized. Our support group offers an opportunity to learn and speak with other teens in a group setting, to discuss their AD/HD, its strengths and challenges, and to share ideas in a supportive and positive environment. The support group will meet each month, beginning in September, during our regular meetings and will be facilitated by a Certified AD/HD Life Coach. A commitment to attend a majority of the eight (8) sessions is expected. Preregistration is required and group size is limited. Riders will participate in the Long Island Bike Challenge (LIBC) on Sunday, August 4th, to support research conducted at The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. Participants in the LIBC will ride 40, 62 or 100 miles, ending in East Hampton. Money raised from the event will be donated to the labs of researchers who study many diseases including cancer, inflammation, schizophrenia, Parkinson’s disease, and Alzheimer’s disease. “As a native to Long Island, I appreciate the synergy of conducting an event on Long Island and raising donations for medical research being conducted on Long Island, which provides jobs and economic benefit to this community,” said Edward Diller, founder of LIBC. “Furthermore, I believe strongly that scientific medical research is vital in finding cures and preventions for diseases, which is why it’s critical
that LIBC supports the mission of the Feinstein Institute to prevent disease and cure patients.” To participate or support the LIBC challenge, visit http://www. feinsteininstitute.org/ events/the-long-islandbike-challenge/. There are three starting points in the LIBC – participants can bike for 100 miles, 62 miles, or 40 miles. The 100-mile ride begins at 6:00 am in the parking lot of the Wantagh LIRR station, the 62-mile ride begins in Medford at 9:15 a.m. and the 40-mile ride begins in Westhampton at 10:30 a.m. Volunteers will operate water stops every 20 miles and mechanical support for bikes will be provided by local bike shops. The finish for all three rides is in East Hampton, where lunch will be provided. Bus transportation is offered to all riders to return to respective starting points.

He hasn’’t taken the train to work in 5-6 years, he drives. His phone last pinged several miles north west of that station at 1:45 pm and then went dead around 2:45pm. The keys were not left in the car, nor was his phone. He was seen at 2:15pm at Arrow Scrap Yard in West Babylon off Kean St. He may have a green mountain bike with him, this was determined to be missing from his home.

The votes are in, and Long Islanders have declared the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center of New York to be the winner of the 2013 Century of Giving Philanthropic Contest. “We are pleased to announce that Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center of NY has received the most votes within our category of ‘Helping Seniors With Specific Health Conditions’, and will be awarded $5,000 from the Law Firm of Davidow, Davidow, Siegel and Stern,” announced Managing Partner Lawrence Davidow this morning. “It is our pleasure to accept the Century of Giving recognition and the donation,” declared Mary Ann Malack-Ragona, Executive Director of the Alzheimer’s Disease Resource Center. “We are honored to have been selected, and we look forward to using these funds to support
additional Long Island families impacted by Alzheimer’s Disease.” Davidow added that the other two Century of Giving nominees also have assisted Long Island seniors in significant ways. “The Arthritis Foundation of Long Island and The American Parkinson Disease Association’s Information & Resource Center on Long Island are each renowned for historic assistance provided to Long Island’s elder populations with health concerns. We salute them for their inspiring efforts and encourage support of these worthy charities,” he noted. The Century of Giving initiative was created by the Law Firm of Davidow, Davidow, Siegel and Stern to celebrate the law firm’s centennial on Long Island. Creating A Personal Funeral Service Part Four Throughout our lives whenever we or someone close to us has a major event, i.e. birth, first birthday, Holy Communion, Graduation, Bar Mitzvah, Wedding, 25th Anniversary, holidays, etc. to commemorate such events we celebrate with a ceremony. Some of the ceremonies are elaborate affairs that take months if not years to plan, some are simple family only affairs but there is always a ceremony. For some reason, many have come to think the death of an individual does not call for any ceremony to commemorate or celebrate the life of the deceased. All too often I hear people say, “I do not wish to be a burden or bother anyone just cremate me and spread my ashes in the ocean” or I hear the family come in and say “he was a simple person who did not want anything just a cremation and bury the ashes in the garden.” Although these procedures are expedient, in my opinion it is not the right thing to do for the survivors or the deceased. I am not saying that you must have a traditional funeral with a viewing and a funeral mass but I am saying some type of ceremony should take place to commemorate and celebrate the life of the deceased. I have assisted in wonderful ceremonies that took place in the individual’s home with a small gathering of friends to reminisce about the deceased. I have helped families coordinate funeral services and catering for over 300 people in attendance. I have also provided information for the family to do their own personal ceremony without anyone else present. The harsh truth is within three generations or less no one will remember any of us but we all should take at least a few moments out of our busy lives to remember those whom we loved and celebrated their lives. The Elizabeth McNamee Memorial Run is held each year in honor of Elizabeth. She was an outstanding individual and member of the community, and in her final year at NYU Law School, she suddenly
died from Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), also known as sudden death syndrome. This year, there was a contingent of runners sporting tee shirts honoring the Boston
Marathon Run. In Elizabeth’s memory a scholarship was formed, and funds are used for programs to aid in research of HCM, the number one cause of sudden cardiac death among youth.
