Car after car passed through the front driveway of Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School on June 16, giving students and staff a chance to say goodbye to each other after three months of distance learning. The school hosted three “reverse parades” that morning, one each for fourth, fifth and sixth graders. In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic

impacting the end of the school year, it is also was the rare circumstance of two grades leaving Park Avenue at the same time. A reconfiguration of the Amityville Union Free School District for September means both fifth and sixth graders are headed to Edmund W. Miles Middle School. The driveup parades also served as moving-up ceremonies for those students.

Principal Robyn Santiago and Assistant Principal Melissa Wiederhold were joined by teachers and staff to wish them good luck and celebrated their accomplishments. Fourth graders, who will remain Park Avenue students for another year, also got the chance to come through to say “see you later.”

Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life.

EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer: Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are: career options by salary, understanding

money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. Social distancing guidelines encouraging people to stay in their homes as much as possible led many to wonder what to do in regard to visiting their physicians. Telehealth is one option people may want to explore. Sometimes referred to as “telemedicine,” telehealth enables patients to speak with their physicians via phone, tablet or conferencing apps such as Zoom. This can help patients and their physicians reduce their risk for exposure to viruses such as COVID-19, but also other conditions that can weaken their immune systems and, as a result, make them more vulnerable to illness. As helpful as telehealth can be while social distancing restrictions remain in place,

it’s important that patients continue to seek the advice of their own physicians. One of the concerns about telehealth noted by representatives for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services is the difficulty of monitoring health care providers who may not have patients’ best interests in mind. This can lead to certain problems, including overprescribing medications and doctors offering medical advice to patients in states where the physicians are not licensed to practice. Speaking only with physicians who have already treated you is one way to avoid this potential pitfall associated with telehealth services.

Throughout our lives whenever we or someone close to us has a major event, i.e. birth, first birthday, Holy Communion, Graduation, Bar Mitzvah, Wedding, 25th Anniversary, holidays, etc. to commemorate such events we celebrate with a ceremony. Some of the ceremonies are elaborate affairs that take months if not years to plan, some are simple family only affairs but there is always a ceremony. For some reason, many have come to think the death of an individual does not call for any ceremony to commemorate or celebrate the life of the deceased. All too often I hear people say “I do not wish to be a burden or bother anyone just cremate me and spend my ashes in the ocean” or I hear the family come in and say “he was a simple person who did not want anything just a cremation and bury the ashes in the garden.” Although these procedures are expedient, in my opinion it is not the right thing to do for the survivors or the deceased. I am not saying that you must have a traditional funeral with a viewing and a funeral mass but I am saying some type of ceremony should take place to commemorate and celebrate the life of the deceased. I have helped families coordinate funeral services and catering for over 300 people in attendance. I have also provided information for the family to do their own personal ceremony without anyone else present. The harsh truth is within three generations or less no one will remember any of us but we all should take at least a few moments out of our busy lives to remember those whom we loved and celebrate their lives. Heat And Health Warm weather beckons people outdoors to enjoy the outdoors. However, when the weather gets too hot, prolonged time outdoors can adversely affect overall health. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke pose significant threats to anyone who spends ample time outdoors in hot weather. The Mayo Clinic says symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, fatigue, moist skin with goose bumps, muscle cramps, nausea, and headache. When someone suffering any of these symptoms does not immediately move

into a cool location, they may develop heatstroke. Heatstroke arises when one’s body temperature climbs to 104 degrees, according to Penn Medicine. A body at this temperature may experience damage to the muscles, heart, kidneys, and brain. Flushed skin, altered mental state and rapid breathing may occur when suffering from heatstroke. A notable symptom of heatstroke is that perspiration stops completely. Rehydration, cooling the body and loosening tight clothes can help prevent serious consequences.
