“Never give up on your vision” was the message from Edmund W. Miles Middle School Principal Earl Mitchell as he addressed eighth graders for the last time before they take the final step of their educational journey in Amityville. The middle school hosted its movingup and awards ceremonies on June 17 and 18 for the future Amityville Memorial High School Class of 2025. Mr. Mitchell talked about Walt Disney, who built one of the most successful companies in the world after getting rejected more than 300 times for the financing of Walt Disney World. He also spoke of football player Jason Pierre Paul, who defied the odds by making it to the NFL even though he didn’t start playing the sport until his junior year of high school. The eighth graders have faced their own challenges

Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is offering families of victims and first responders to add loved ones’ names to its 9-11 Memorial as part of the 20th year remembrance of the September 11th Terrorist Attacks on America. The Memorial monument, located within Holy Rood Cemetery in Westbury, was erected in 2003 and currently displays the names of 414 individuals who were victims of the 9-11 terrorist attacks at the World Trade Center and individuals who worked to rescue and recover the victims at Ground Zero in Lower Manhattan. Family members who lost loved ones are encouraged to submit their names using a special form with required information and attestation. The deceased’s full name and optionally, their profession or role, will be added to the memorial. All forms must be submitted and arrive by email or mail by July 31, 2021. The form is available online at https:// CCLongIsland.org/9-11memorial/. Those who lost their lives later due to health conditions and
exposure at Ground Zero and lower Manhattan are also eligible. “As we approach the 20th year since 9-11, we know that many people remain profoundly impacted. Our memorial wall at Holy Rood Cemetery is a place of solace, reflection and tribute to the lives that were tragically lost. Located in a specially designated area at the cemetery, the Memorial will be the site of a special outdoor mass which will be presided over by Diocese of Rockville Centre Bishop John Barres on September 11th this year,” said Richard Bie, CEO of Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island’s 9-11 memorial is a beautiful black marble sculpture that is the center piece of a specially designated area of the cemetery which was set aside for victims of the terrorist attacks. Inscription on the memorial is provided by Catholic Cemeteries at no cost to the families, and the individuals do not have to be Catholic for inclusion. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island owns and
operates four cemeteries across Long Island, including Cemetery of the Holy Rood in Westbury, NY, Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Coram, NY, Queen of All Saints Cemetery in Central Islip NY, and Queen of Peace Cemetery in Old Westbury, NY. Queen of Peace is the first new Catholic cemetery to open on Long Island in decades. The chapel at Queen of Peace Cemetery is under construction at this time and is expected to be completed by the summer of 2022. Catholic Cemeteries of Long Island is dedicated to meeting both the spiritual and physical needs of the more than 1.4 million Catholics across the Diocese of Rockville Centre, which encompasses Nassau and Suffolk counties on Long Island, NY. Amityville Middle Schoolers Go Forth With Vision Continued From 6 masks. “Work hard to be everything you were meant to be.” I n t e r i m Superintendent Dr. Edward Fale noted that the eighth graders have been guided along the way by great teachers as they became part of the legacy and history of Edmund W. Miles Middle School, a place with a tradition of excellence. “This is a major milestone in your educational careers,” Dr. Fale said. “You’ve studied and you’ve met very high standards, of both
the Amityville School District and New York State.” The moving-up ceremony included the presentation of dozens of awards. Department chairs announced the names of the highestperforming students in each subject area. Assistant Principal Lurdez Berrios named the recipients of the President’s Award for Educational Achievement and the President’s Award for Educational Excellence. A new award this year was the Naomi Rochelle
Provost Music and Arts Memorial Scholarship, named for a former middle school student who overcame serious challenges in life to give back to her school through involvement in numerous organizations. The scholarship was presented to Karina Escobar Rivera and April Kenny. Assistant Principal Paul Duguay said they were chosen for their strong and active participation in the school community as well as their involvement with NYSSMA. Jafeth Ortega Alvarado
and Natali Umanzor received the Warriors of the Year award, and April Kenny was presented with the New York State Comptroller Triple C Award for courage, character and commitment. Each ceremony was followed by an outside reception under a large tent. Eighth graders enjoyed pizza, iced tea and water, played games, looked through their 2021 yearbooks and took photos in front of an Amityville Warriors backdrop.
