Pencil It In By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Pencil it in. Erase it. And repeat. Such has been the state of my calendar for the last several weeks. Months, even. I’m not sure when it became so difficult to plan things. Used to be a time when you could simply pick up the phone – yes, the actual phone – and call a friend to go to dinner, a movie, the beach, whatever. Chances are, you also needed to coordinate a ride to said destination from a parental unit; but still, somehow, you made it happen. Nowadays, such outings require about 30 days advance notice – and, even at that, will most likely be

rescheduled at least three times before materializing. For some reason, the more methods of communication available, the more difficult it has become to maintain contact. Actual, personal contact. Sending a text, only to have it halfheartedly acknowledged four days later, is not quite the same as catching up over drinks. Liking a Facebook status doesn’t indicate your genuine interest in another person’s life. Face-to-face conversation does. I have always been the type of person who tries to keep in touch, the one reaching out, making plans, coordinating… And I don’t mind it, mostly. But when it feels as though it’s becoming more of a chore

than anything, well, perhaps it’s time to reevaluate. Friendships, like the communication which they are based upon, are a twoway street. Summer is a perfect season to reconnect, to socialize, to reunite with those long-lost, or perhaps just slightly lapsed, acquaintances. School is out, work schedules tend to be more lax, vacations are planned… and more often than not, it winds up being worth the wait. If only it could be written in ink from day one. The presentations were focused on educating the public about the epidemic and covering ways that those in attendance could help and spread the word to their friends and families. Combating the opioid epidemic continues to be an important initiative for all levels of government and community organizations alike. “The West Babylon Main Street Organization was proud to partner with Legislator McCaffrey and all the other community groups for the NARCAN training night at the West Babylon Fire Department,” said Diane Thiel, president of the West Babylon Main Street Organization. “It’s very important that we continue efforts like this by working together to bring greater awareness for prevention, to offer resources to help those in need of support for recovery and to be prepared to help save a life in an emergency situation.” Combating the opioid epidemic has become a

major focus for the Suffolk County Legislature and Legislator McCaffrey in particular. The opioid epidemic has risen to the top of Legislator McCaffrey’s list of priorities, along with balancing the budget. “When I was first elected to the Suffolk County Legislature, I said my main focus would be on balancing the budget in Suffolk County,” said McCaffrey. “Now, I am also focusing on the opioid epidemic in Suffolk County in the hopes that I can save at least one life through my work and these trainings.” According to Suffolk County Police Department (SCPD) Emergency Medical Training Unit Instructor Jason Byron, the SCPD district has already recorded approximately 580 overdoses in 2016, with 109 of them being fatal. On Thursday, July 14th, Legislator Kevin McCaffrey hosted a NARCAN training at the West Babylon Fire Department to combat the opioid epidemic and teach people how to administer the live saving drug to save the lives of people who overdose. The training was hosted by Legislator McCaffrey’s office in partnership with the West Babylon Fire Department, the Suffolk County Police Department, the West Babylon Main Street Organization, Lindenhurst Community Cares and 7-11. The Amityville Union Free School District is pleased to announce that recent graduate Tysheem Griffin will be a participant in the 2016 Paralympic Games, which will be held in Rio de Janeiro in Brazil following the Summer Olympics. Tysheem, a member of Amityville Memorial High School’s class of 2016 and standout track athlete, has qualified to take part in

the 400-meter race during the games, which will be held from September 7th through 18th. He was selected as a member of Team USA by the U.S. Paralympics, a division of the United States Olympic Committee. Last year, Tysheem competed in the 2015 International Sports Federation for Persons with Intellectual Disability Global Games held in

Ecuador. He placed first in the 200-meter race finale, and second in the 100-meter dash. In Amityville, he was a member of the track team under the direction of coach Reynolds Hawkins. This past year, Tysheem set the Suffolk County Division III boys spring track and field record in the 400-meter dash. “We are thrilled that Tysheem, who has always represented Amityville so well, will now have the opportunity to proudly represent our nation at the upcoming Paralympic Games,” said Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary T. Kelly. “He is an outstanding athlete and a wonderful young man who has worked hard for this fantastic and welldeserved opportunity. Intro to Coding Students in the Amityville School District’s Summer Enrichment Program have been learning 21st century skills thanks to computer programming courses that are being offered for the first time. Through a partnership with Stony Brook University’s kidOYO initiative, third- through seventh-grade students enrolled in the summer program at Northwest Elementary School are learning basic computer coding. They are using Scratch, a visual programming language

that allows for the easy creation of moving graphics. Teachers are helping the students make simple projects, such as animated mazes, on Chromebooks and desktop computers. “The teachers are all really excited,” said Timothy Hellmuth, principal of the summer enrichment program, explaining that four Amityville teachers were trained on kidOYO earlier this month. He added that the computer programming courses will continue in the upcoming school year in

an effort to teach students current technology skills. The free four-week summer enrichment program is open to public- and privateschool students living in the district. Daily acitivities include reading, writing, math and STEAM labs. The program runs through July 28th, and a two-week summer enrichment camp featuring robotics, archery, the arts and more follows from August 1st through 11th at Park Avenue Memorial CRUSHING THE COMPETITION - On Friday, June 17th, the Lindy Crushers softball team, members of the Lindenhurst American Minors Softball, took on Bay Elementary School.
