I have a beach blanket; well, to be clear, it’s more of a moving blanket that has admirably served its purpose on the beach, the grass… pretty much anywhere it’s been needed over the last year and a half. Until last Monday. Last Monday, my friend and I decided to attend one of the many free summer concerts on the schedule this season at Massapequa’s John J. Burns Park. While the forecast called for rain and possible thunderstorms later in the evening, the concert remained set to go off. We arrived early, set up the aforementioned blanket and a couple of chairs, and waited. Light drizzle had begun to fall on and off at this point. Several local legislators appeared to make the

obligatory introductions on stage and stated that, due to the impending storms, the show would begin a bit earlier than scheduled. Perfect. Headliner Bret Michaels took the stage shortly after, and was greeted by an ecstatic crowd, most clutching their umbrellas in earnest, as the rain began to fall harder. About a half dozen songs in, the torrential downpour commenced. At that point, it became clear that, despite the best intentions, the show would simply not be able to go on. The house lights (or lampposts, as the case was) went up, the power to the jumbo screen was cut, and the crew desperately tried to cover the speakers and electronics as the mad dash to the parking lot began. Ah, but there still

remained the small matter of the blanket. The gigantic, now completely saturated, blanket, which now weighed approximately 50 lbs. as we attempted to roll it up and drag it to the parking lot – all the while trying to sidestep the massive mud puddles which had formed in a matter of minutes. As I contemplated chucking the entire thing into the nearest garbage pail, the absurdity of the whole scene suddenly struck me, and I became hysterical with laughter. “The next time they forecast ‘a chance’ of anything, let’s do ourselves a favor and leave the blanket in the trunk.” As I write this, four days later, the blanket remains draped over my deck, drying in the afternoon sun. It’s still a bit damp.

The 2013 “Friends Quilt” raised $10,000, all of which was directly donated to Spectrum Designs at their office in Port Washington on October 19th, 2013. The purpose of these funds was to provide assistance so that they can hire more full-time employees and continue their goal of creating vocational opportunities for young adults with special needs. It is with great pride and humility that North Shore Autism Circle and the Holes for Hope committee members submitted this donation with the notion of paying it forward, one good deed at a time. Liz Feld, the President of Autism Speaks, will once again be joining to discuss the current issues and advances surrounding the Autism community and to help celebrate the five year anniversary of Holes for Hope. The “Friends Quilt” mimics the quilting technique of “binding pieces of fabric together” by joining all the individuals who are now part of our unbreakable patchwork of friends. NY Rising funding may be used to finance repairs to real property or to reimburse for repairs to real property, excluding landscaping or any element that is not part of the building. Priority is given to properties that offer affordable units – serving renters with income levels that fall below 80 percent of the area’s median income (AMI), as well as properties that sustained storm damage that still needs to be repaired. For example, on Long Island, the AMI is $105,000 for a family of four in Nassau County. Property owners who have not started post-storm repairs are also given preference. Owners who have completed repairs and executed a contract before October 29th, 2013 may be eligible for reimbursement. Funds for this program come from a federal government disaster recovery appropriation to help the State of New York with unmet storm recovery needs. The federal government requires the State of New York to ensure that applicants are not paid twice for repairs. Thus, any proceeds from another federal source, charitable source, and/or private insurance received for storm damage to the subject will be deducted from any eventual NY Rising award. The Rental Properties Program is part of GOSR’s larger NY Rising Housing Recovery Program, which began accepting applications from single family homeowners in April 2013. Established in June 2013, GOSR additionally oversees the NY Rising Small Business, Community Reconstruction and Infrastructure Programs. ANSWER: This is sometimes caused by a congenital condition (one that you have inherited). It can also result from harmful habits in childhood, such as thumb-sucking. When the force of the thumb is exerted against the front teeth it can move them into a forward position, making spaces appear between the teeth. Another cause is tongue-thrusting or reverse swallowing. This also puts pressure on the front teeth and pushes them forward, creating unwanted spaces. Too much space between teeth can detract from your appearance, especially if the space is in the front of your mouth. If you have this problem, your dentist can correct it in a number of ways. Straightening misaligned teeth by orthodontic means may be one solution. If it's not a case of misaligned teeth, your dentist may be able to rebuild some of the teeth cosmetically by bonding to eliminate the space and improve your appearance.

It took so many years. To dispose of it will be quite rough - at least for her in tears. For each treasured trinket is a sweet memory Of her youth, of her husband, and her children - there were three. A sweet blue baby blanket from her first baby born. It may be frayed and tattered and just a little torn. She does not want to part with it for any price, you see. Though now adult, he’ll be her baby for eternity. So now she clings to each old thing feeling quite forlorn. For people gone now from her life, she still has to mourn.

You can’t keep all these things they tell her - there just isn’t that much room. The new place will be better for you; her heart fills with dread and gloom. Some photos in an album show her late husband in his youth, A letter to the tooth fairy and the third baby’s first little tooth. Roses pressed in a book to preserve their bloom, She remembers as a gift from her loving groom. She found things she had forgotten and didn’t know she had. Some things made her feel good; others made her sad. The clay handprint ashtray someone made in camp The high school woodshop project that had become a lamp. She found handmade greeting cards “To my Mommy and my Dad.” If this was better for her, why did it feel so bad? This was her life piled up outside, she wanted to declare. She was afraid of all the changes and moving now elsewhere. Don’t make me feel like I’m a problem - I’m your mother after all. Don’t be impatient with me or bothered when I call. She wanted them to know her feelings and to let her know they care. Please listen to me - my memories I need to share!

On July 13th, Liz Holzknecht, a Mineola GRANT SECURED - Congressman Pete King recently helped secure a $215,080 resident, presented a check Assistance to Firefighters grant for the Amityville Fire Department to purchase 35 self- in the amount of $3,500 to contained breathing apparatuses to protect from heat, smoke and chemicals. weekends and summer sessions for eight years. On September 2013, Kate passed away at the age of 23. The camp held a special memorial ceremony in her honor and, on March 28th, the Moriches Paquatuck Squaws held the Spring Fling Joy Prom in her honor. Camp Pa-Qua-Tuck is a resident summer camp serving children and young adults ages 6-21 with both physical and developmental special needs. Its mission is to help

these children to achieve equality, dignity, and maximum independence through a safe and quality program of camping, recreation, and education. The first is the adamant statement made by the Church that cremated remains of a deceased Catholic must be treated the same as the human body and that cremation is NOT the final disposition. Therefore, some final resting place for the Cremated Remains must be made. The scattering of ashes over land or sea is NOT an acceptable practice for deceased members of the Catholic Church nor is leaving them in the care of the funeral home nor is it acceptable to keep Cremated Remains at home on the mantle or in the garage. The Cremated Remains of a person should be interred in the ground or entombed in a niche (a mausoleum for cremated remains) in a suitable urn.

While promoting the values that underlie the Church’s preference for burial of the body, the Church must exercise sensitive pastoral judgment concerning the choice that nearly 20 percent of Catholics are making in favor of cremation. Economic, geographic, ecological or family factors on occasion make cremation the only feasible choice.
