Warm weather beckons people outdoors to enjoy the outdoors. However, when the weather gets too hot, prolonged time outdoors can adversely affect overall health. Heat exhaustion and heat stroke pose significant threats to anyone who spends ample time outdoors in hot weather. The Mayo Clinic says symptoms of heat exhaustion include heavy sweating, rapid pulse, dizziness, fatigue, moist skin with goose bumps, muscle cramps, nausea, and headache. When someone suffering any of these symptoms does not immediately move
into a cool location, they may develop heatstroke. Heatstroke arises when one’s body temperature climbs to 104 degrees, according to Penn Medicine. A body at this temperature may experience damage to the muscles, heart, kidneys, and brain. Flushed skin, altered mental state and rapid breathing may occur when suffering from heatstroke. A notable symptom of heatstroke is that perspiration stops completely. Rehydration, cooling the body and loosening tight clothes can help prevent serious consequences.

Edward Plaia said the graduates had different journeys to arrive at this destination, but what they did have in common was hard work, perseverance and a will to succeed. The Class of 2020 has students who exceeded in academics, the arts and athletics, and earned $4 million in scholarships. Seniors entering the military were individually recognized. Mr. Plaia said that seniors made great sacrifices to help curtail the spread of COVID-19, having their last day of school without evening knowing it. Many of them, working parttime jobs at supermarkets and restaurants, learned what it meant to be an essential worker. As remote instruction began, they became more independent in their learning. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly said that when the school year began, no one would imagine it ending this way. Students became eyewitnesses to history. But despite those challenges, there were many important items that the pandemic could not take away from them – the love of family, cherished memories with friends, their knowledge and skills, their grit and determination, and their hopes and dreams.
“This is your moment, your generation’s world to shape,” she told the Class of 2020. “You’re ready for the challenges ahead we will be here rooting for you.” With protests for equality taking place throughout the country, senior class President Jeffrey ReyesEspinal said that diversity is Amityville’s strength and he is proud to graduate from a high school where students come from many different cultures. He invoked his late fourth grade teacher, Marc Engler, whose emphasis on good character and the importance of treating others respectfully made an indelible mark on all students. The Class of 2020 is special to Mr. Plaia, because when he returned to the district six years ago as principal of Edmund W. Miles Middle School, they were entering the school as well as seventh graders. He later became high school principal and got see them complete the last year of their educational journeys in Amityville. As they move on, he left them with some advice from his father: “If you want to accomplish something, you need to just do it.”

Equity First Foundation (EFF) is a 501c3 nonprofit organization located here on Long Island. Rhonda Klch started this foundation with the mission to offer services, resources and programs to consumers and small businesses that are facing financial distress. Although the details of financial markets may not be necessary for everyone, a good understanding of everyday finances is needed to ensure your home, bank account and additional assets are protected as you go about your life. This nonprofit is guided by a board of experts from the Long Island business community. They strive to educate the community so people can make financial decisions with knowledge and confidence. EFF provides financial education, literacy and best practices at low or no cost to individuals and groups from primary school through retirement and including life events. Rhonda Klch, Executive Director of the Equity First Foundation has taken all necessary steps to get out of her comfort zone and attack COVID with her resources. As a women entrepreneur, she used her relationships, social media and community to power through this current pandemic. Although EFF has switched their programs from in person to virtual, they have been well received. They continue to offer free financial counseling and outreach resources for numerous families on Long Island. The Equity First Foundation has three different types of programs that they offer:

Educational Institution Program This program focuses on k-12, post secondary, and trade schools with student types comprised of all abilities including special needs and developmentally disabled. It is offered as a workshop / assembly that can last for as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Each program is uniquely designed to fit the educational facility after a comprehensive needs analysis. Some sample topics that can be addressed are:

career options by salary, understanding money management, life skills, healthy financial choices, creating a budget, creating a savings account and more. Community Outreach Program The Community Outreach Program focuses on independent facilities, partnering charities and nonprofits, community centers, libraries, career fairs, guest speakers, events and more for all demographics. These are offered in as short as 45 minutes to as long as a full day or mini series. Some sample topics are: first time home-buyer, understanding student loans, improving your credit, avoiding senior scams, understanding your retirement plan and more. Corporate Awareness Program This program focuses on a lunch and learn structure for 10 or more employees. Some sample topics are: paying off debt, understanding your 401K, saving for vacation, your family on a budget and benefits of good credit. A graduating class full of hope and promise was celebrated at Amityville Memorial High School on June 27 during five commencement ceremonies, the result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Speakers, in noting the great uncertainty in the world right now, emphasized their belief that the Class of 2020 will be better for it. This year’s graduation was anything but traditional. With a 150-person limit, Amityville’s class of more than 200 seniors could not celebrate the milestone together, with ceremonies of approximately 45 students apiece and each graduate limited to two guests. On the football field, chairs were set up to respect social distancing rules and masks had to be worn. Graduates picked up their diploma folders from a table on the stage. Speeches by the valedictorian, salutatorian, class president and class adviser were given in person only at the first session, with pre-recorded versions played later. But the unusual circumstances, and some on-and-off rain, didn’t temper enthusiasm for a moment that was 13 years in the making. Principal

The Town of Babylon Local Development Corporation (LDC) has approved a $100,000 endowment to support the local art community as well as proposals to beautify Babylon. In partnership with Babylon Citizens Council on the Arts, Inc. (BACCA), the first $20,000 of the endowment will focus on projects that renew the beauty of the Town’s downtowns as well as programs that are aimed at bringing the community together. The funding is part of the Town’s Babylon is Back initiative which serves to provide businesses with additional support as they recover from the COVID-19 pandemic. “We have a strong arts community within the Town of Babylon that is eager to get started on many public beautification projects,” said Matthew McDonough, Director of the Babylon is Back Program. “Our partnership with BACCA will not only improve the overall aesthetics of our Town, but the projects that this money will fund will attract visitors to our area and help businesses rebound from the impacts of the COVID-19 shutdown.”
With the LDC’s backing, BACCA will host several art projects across the Town of Babylon over the coming months in partnership with local artists, organizations, and small businesses. These projects include outdoor painting classes, a drive-in concert featuring local musicians, murals and other public art installations to be featured in a “Babylon Together Arts Trail.” One of the first mural efforts will take place at the HRHCare Health Center in Wyandanch and will be facilitated by Saint-Cyr Art Studio. The approximately 12 foot by 90 foot mural will be designed and completed by selected students from the 2020 graduating class of Wyandanch High School and the theme of the mural will focus on improving mental health. “We are extremely appreciative of the LDC’s support of our mission to provide an avenue for residents to safely reconnect and boost morale within the community as we support local artists,” said BACCA Executive Director, Elizabeth Mirarchi. “The affects of the current health crisis have been felt by all, and small businesses as well as
the arts and entertainment sector have encountered unprecedented challenges. This opportunity will allow us to create a lasting impact on our community through the arts.” Each art installation planned under the initiative is part of BACCA’s larger vision to have an art trail throughout the Town of Babylon, giving residents and visitors a new attraction which will also help bring patrons to local businesses within the area. Amityville Board Welcomes Three Trustees, Names Officers
Three new trustees joined the Amityville Union Free School District Board of Education at its reorganization meeting on July 1 at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School. The meeting was held with limited participants in the
gymnasium to allow for social distancing during the COVID-19 pandemic. Lisa Johnson, Leslie Kretz and Carol Seehof were sworn in after they were elected to three-year terms in the June election. The board also selected Terry Fulton as president
for the 2020-21 school year, along with Juan Leon as first vice president and Jeannette Santos as second vice president. As is tradition, Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly also took the oath of office.

Economic Opportunity Council Of Suffolk, Inc. Receives Federal Funding To Help Low Income Suffolk Residents The Economic Opportunity Council of Suffolk, Inc. (EOC of Suffolk) has received $1.7 million in federal funds to provide financial assistance to individuals and families facing economic hardships arising from COVID-19related disruptions. The funds are being made available to eligible Suffolk County residents
who have either lost their jobs, became temporarily unemployed, or faced financial difficulties because of the pandemic. The funds originate from the federal Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security Act – commonly known as the CARES Act – which is providing $41 billion in funding to supplement the nationwide
Community Services Block Grant (CSBG) program. Signed into law on March 27, the relief program aims to address the consequences of increased unemployment and economic disruption resulting from the COVID-19 virus. “The Coronavirus pandemic has triggered the most damaging economic crisis America has faced
in some 80 years,” said Adrian Fassett, CEO of EOC of Suffolk. “During this difficult period, these federal funds will help our organization fulfill our mission of promoting the economic self-sufficiency of Suffolk County residents.” An applicant’s eligible expenses can include food, funeral costs, rental expenses, broker fees,
utility expenses, medical expenses, retraining expenses, clothing, bedding, toiletries, and other expenses. Household income cannot exceed 200 percent of poverty guidelines. The determination of financial eligibility for CARES assistance does not factor in an applicant’s supplemental
