paradise to be sure. As the clock ticked to approximately 10 p.m., we of course decided we were slightly hungry once again, and in need of just a small snack for the road. After eventually being seated at one of the aforementioned outdoor patios, we settled in to people watch. Little did we know that the most fascinating spectacle would be surrounding our very own table. On the one side, a young woman argued vehemently with the manager over her credit card charge, demanding it be reversed immediately. On the other, a family with several children was finishing up their meal, when I heard the unmistakeable commotion of a child getting sick, right in the leftovers bag. His darling siblings gathered ‘round to witness the spectacle, while the parents, seemingly unaffected by this, remained calmly seated at the table, finishing their cocktails. Check, please! And that, ladies and gentlemen, was The End of The End for us for that evening. ’Til next time.

Finally, the end was upon us, the grand lighthouse on the hill. Having missed the hours of operation due to our detours en route to Montauk Point, we didn’t have the opportunity to browse the gift shop or climb the tower this time around, although our prior experience with the latter had been, shall we say, less than impressive. While the Fire Island Lighthouse boasts a circular terrace to walk around the top and enjoy the scenic views below, Montauk has more of a ladder jutting up through a small hole in the ceiling, where, if you’re lucky, you can climb two steps - not even to the top - and poke your head out for a split second. Not exactly a full-service “tour,” to be sure. Far more exciting are the rocks surrounding the base of the building, providing picturesque views of the Atlantic Ocean as its waves crash along the shoreline. On any given day, you can find tons of people carefully navigating the giant boulders as they make

their way from one side to another. Children, pets, senior citizens… all seem drawn to this spot. From there, we took a drive to several of the private beaches to scope out a nice sunset view. Navy Beach, Outer Beach… all were dotted with signs indicating the fines due if you dared park without the prestigious East Hampton town beach pass. How strictly was this rule enforced after dusk? We didn’t know; but, as the sun began to reach its golden hour, we decided it was worth the risk. And so, we found a rock wall to perch on overlooking the water, and we waited (one eye on the parking lot at all times, of course). Once the last rays had dissipated, we headed into town, the town which had been practically closed down during the last of our pilgrimages. What a difference the summer season makes. Restaurant after restaurant, outdoor patios bustling with music and people enjoying cocktails, stores filled with novelty items and “beachy” merchandise, a summertime

The Reunion for those May 6th veterans, their guardians, friends and family members is being hosted by the American Airpower Museum on Saturday, August 5th, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. The reunion announcement and details for that event were sent to those participants. The next Honor Flight is scheduled on September 23rd. Eligible veterans will receive the flight information very soon. They have a waiting list, mostly Korean veterans, but they will certainly make room for any WWII veterans who want to go. Honor Flight continues to look for financial assistance from philanthropists, foundations and those who are in a position to provide monetary support for the cause. They are truly grateful for the strong support that has kept them flying so far. They could not do it without you. For several weeks, we have been discussing how to create a more meaningful funeral service by making it more personal. I am talking about the entire funeral process, not just the actual funeral service. You can personalize the music during the wake if you so desire. I knew one family which at the beginning and end of each visitation for about five minutes played Frank Sinatra singing “I Did It MY Way” loud enough for everyone to hear, and by the end of the second visitation, everyone sang along. The deceased was a life-long fan of Sinatra and endured and conquered many hardships by doing things her way. Another family redecorated my chapel with the deceased’s artwork. I have also assisted families in arranging personal memorial services in their own home or restaurants where friends and family gathered to reflect and share memories.

Fire Island Lighthouse

Middle school now awaits the 207 students who graduated from Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District. The sixthgraders were recognized at a moving up ceremony on June 22nd. Principal Robyn Santiago said that while they have great achievements to celebrate, they should strive to do even better next year. She reminded the youngsters that they don’t always have to follow the crowd and

should always make good choices, even when no one is looking. “You are very special to me and very dear to my heart as you are my first sixth-grade graduates from Park Avenue,” Ms. Santiago said. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly said their high school graduation in six years is a lot closer than it seems. She encouraged them to start thinking about college now and putting in the hard work that is required to reach their goals. Middle

Promoted from Park Avenue school, she said, will offer numerous opportunities to get involved in clubs and athletics, and take challenging courses. The sentiments were echoed by National Junior Honor Society President Bryanna Leguizamon, who said there is a place for everyone at the middle school. Assistant Principal Dennis Ricci invited Park Avenue’s newest graduates to come back to the school from time to time and share their successes.

SENIOR CENTER ANNIVERSARY - Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory was on hand to help celebrate the 15th Anniversary of the North Amityville Senior Center at its “Welcome to the Cotton Club” celebration on June 30th. The senior center honored its resident DJ, Duke Connor; better known as “DJ Duke,” with the 2017 Senior Citizen of the Year Award in recognition of all of the work he has done providing the seniors with fun and entertainment over the years.
