The Amityville Union Free School District Board of Education hosted its reorganization meeting on July 2nd, with re-elected trustees Juan Leon and Jeannette Santos sworn into office to begin their new three-year terms. The board returned the same leadership for the 2018-2019 school year, with Carolyn Dodd elected president, Mr. Leon selected as first vice president and Laura Pawlewicz chosen as second vice president. They also appointed Barbara Miller as the new district clerk. As an annual tradition, Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly took the oath of office. The regular business meeting followed, which included a presentation by the district’s architectural and construction management firms on the planned addition and renovations to Amityville Memorial High School.

Did you feel empty without all the chaos and manic energy surrounding you, pushing you forward from one selfimposed task to the next? Or was it somewhat fulfilling, perhaps allowing you a muchneeded breath of fresh air? Sometimes, in literally taking that breath, we can recapture a large piece of ourselves that we tend to lose to the daily grind. It grounds us, reminding us of the important things in life. And what is more important than finding happiness in the mundane, in making the most of our time, in savoring the memories before they have had a chance to fade ... Nothing, so far as I can tell. There is no fault in having aspirations and dreams; just remember that these days we are living presently are the stuff that dreams are made of as well.

My column last week touched on the concept of leaving your day - or at least a portion of it - to chance, to not making a point of scheduling every second, to disconnecting from the socalled “obligations” of phone calls and e-mails and text messages, to refrain from mindlessly scrolling through your social media feeds … to simply experience life as it was designed to be, in the ﬂesh, ever present. I received quite a bit of feedback on this topic, with many sheepishly admitting they are guilty of precisely this on a regular basis. Several even went so far as to make a point of saying they wanted to try my experiment, even if just for a few hours. I’m curious to hear how it went, if any followed through.

The addition will feature a new gymnasium and locker rooms, science labs, classrooms and expansion to the cafeteria. Board members got a look at the interior and exterior finishes that will be used, which will be based upon the school colors, red and gray. The outside will consist of gray brick, complimented with red brick. Red panels will be used above the gym lobby entrance, shaped to resemble an “A.” Carpet tiles for the renovated library will have red and gray patterns, and lightweight furniture, that can be easily moved to create small- and large-

Coastal Steward Long Island is a local non-profit that is dedicated to restoring and preserving Long Island’s coastline through education, community action and raising public awareness. They hope to foster a caring connection between Long Island residents and their shoreline to create future generations of coastal stewards. CSLI has led beach cleanups in their local communities for over a decade, which has helped prevent the contamination of our beaches. Thanks to their volunteers and sponsors, they have removed over 200 tons of trash from the shores of Long Island! On Sunday, August 12th, they are hosting their 2nd Underwater Beach Cleanup. This will be held at Centennial Beach in Port Jefferson starting at 9 a.m. If you love our oceans and want to help keep our coastlines clean, bring your friends and family to help clean up the beach. Also, if you are a certified scuba diver, you can bring your equipment and join those who will go below the surface and clean the beach. Elizabeth Jane (Janie) Moffatt-Rousseau, a lifetime resident of Amityville, LI, died suddenly on July 4th, 2018 at Good Samaritan Hospital, West Islip. She was 76 years-old. Jane was born on September 19th, 1941 in Amityville to Albertis H. and Myriam (Davis) Sammis. She was employed as an administrator in The Blaikie Group in New York. Jane was predeceased

by her husband Bernard Rousseau and her father Albertis Sammis. Survivors include her mother Myriam Sammis, her children Rich (Donna) Moffatt, Tommy (Michelle) Moffatt and Rob (Izzie) Moffatt, her grandchildren Richie, Christopher, Amy, James, Sara, Jonathin, Jake and Scott, her great grandchildren Jack and Penny and many loving nieces and nephews. Major League Lesson Players from the Amityville Union Free School District’s baseball program got to learn from the professionals when they were invited to Citi Field to work with the New York Mets. Nearly 30 players from the varsity, junior varsity and middle school levels spent three hours at Citi Field on June 23rd. Mets players Dominic Smith, Jeurys Familia and Luis Guillorme worked with the players on hitting, pitching and fielding. Also participating were

former Mets pitcher and SNY broadcaster Nelson Figueroa, bullpen coach Ricky Bones and Director of Player Relations Donovan Mitchell. “It was an amazing, oncein-a-lifetime experience,” said head coach Chris Diot. “Our players had a great time and were even invited back for next year. It was just an incredible day for the Amityville baseball program.” Assistant coach Jack Zider said in addition to baseball skills, the young players learned life lessons

such as perseverance. The Mets players, coaches and staff shared stories of their baseball journeys. “The opportunity to learn from major league players and coaches is something that we could only dream about before that day,” Zider said. “I’m confident that I speak for all of us when I say that we are forever grateful to the Mets for their generosity and enthusiasm when providing this baseball education and sharing their passion and love for the game.”

Sports Camps Feature Skills More than 100 youngsters kicked off their summer by getting some exercise at the Amityville Union Free School District’s sports skills camps. Held in the high school gymnasium and on the athletic fields, students entering fourth, fifth and sixth grades were able to choose between basketball, ﬂag football, soccer and volleyball.
