The Stony Brook University Alumni Association will donate $125,000 to establish the ‘Seawolves for Life Alumni Scholarship Fund’ to benefit scholarship support for undergraduate students at the University. The gift was matched in full by the Simons Foundation Challenge, creating a $250,000 philanthropic impact. The scholarship was created for the highest performing students who show the greatest financial need. Sherry Sussman, MD ’91, ’95, Immediate Past President of the Stony Brook Alumni Association, who received her undergraduate degree from Stony Brook and is a graduate of the Stony Brook University School of Medicine, is excited for the scholarship’s impact. “One of the goals of the

Alumni Association is to enhance the lives of our current students. We’re extremely proud to have created the ‘Seawolves for Life Scholarship’ and we’ve doubled the impact that this scholarship will have on undergraduate students through the transformational generosity of the Simons Foundation,” said Sussman. “We hope that this Scholarship opens doors for students just as the University has done for so many of us alumni.” The $125,000 gift was generated primarily by proceeds from the Alumni Association’s annual Scholarship Golf Classic. If so Suffolk Majority Leader and 15th district legislator DuWayne Gregory is interested in meeting with you. That’s because DuWayne currently accepting nominations for appointment to the Suffolk County Youth Board Coordinating Council. Comprised of private citizens and representatives of county agencies serving youth, the 36-member body advises the County Executive on matters pertaining to children and youth. It has the following specific duties: • Review and annually approve the local comprehensive youth development plan, including its data analysis, its priority problems and objectives and its proposed

programs, including each agency which the County contracts with to provide services. • Receive a periodic monitoring, progress and evaluation report pertaining to the implementation of the local youth services plan. • Serve as an advisory committee to the Youth Bureau and its Director in carrying out the responsibilities. • Establish a closer liaison and cooperation between youth-serving agencies with Suffolk County and perform such other duties as are delegated by the County Executive or County Legislature. Board members must live within the borders of the 15th County legislative district. The term of service is three years. Members receive no compensation for their services but are be reimbursed for expenses incurred in the

performance of their duties. Meetings take place monthly at the H. Lee Dennison Building, 100 Veterans Memorial Highway in Hauppauge, and usually run from 9 am to noon. “Our young people are our greatest resource,” says Gregory of what he’s looking for in an applicant. “So it’s critical that whomever I nominate first and foremost be able to articulate and demonstrate their passion for young people and how they can help them succeed over the challenges they face in an ever-changing world.” To be considered for nomination by Gregory interested persons must submit the following: • Nominee’s name, home address, contact phone numbers and email address. • Resume of germane

United States Soldier Kevin Brady traveled from Fort Bragg Army Base to SaveA-Pet Animal Rescue and Adoption Center, Inc. on July 4th for an emotional reunion with Bailey, a stray dog that became his battle buddy while stationed in Afghanistan. Guardians of Rescue raised over $5,000 to arrange for Bailey’s safe return through its “Paws of War — No Buddy Left Behind” program. Nowzad Dogs in Kabul was able to locate Bailey, in cooperation with Guardians of Rescue, where she was cared for before being shipped to Dubai Kennels. Bailey was quarantined, spayed, vaccinated, microchipped and groomed, so that she could be reunited with her hero and best friend, who had cared for her since she was a puppy. Brady and the elevenmonth-old dog had been separated for two months before seeing each other again at Save-A-Pet. She is currently on her way to her new forever home in Northern California, where Brady and his family reside.

Last week we asked you to think about developing an idea that would contribute to a personal funeral service - which would have the greatest meaning to you and your family for your loved one. We stated that it did not matter whether you were planning a traditional funeral with a wake and church service or whether you were planning a direct cremation or direct burial with a memorial service at a later date. We feel from all our experiences those who take the time to think about a funeral service which recalls the joy and comfort the deceased brought forth into your and your family’s lives begin the mourning process with a much better focus. Pictures of times gone by are a wonderful reminder of a person’s contributions to joy and happiness. Letters written by friends, co-workers and family also remind you of the joy the deceased brought into your hearts. Although flowers contribute beauty and are an integral part of the funeral process - instead of flowers you may wish to ask friends and family members to contribute pictures or a written story to the funeral service. Some of you reading this article may also wish to consider bringing pictures or a written story to a funeral instead of sending flowers; The family would greatly appreciate your efforts. You may wish to have one or several people deliver a eulogy. With consultation with the clergy/minister the eulogy can be delivered at the church during the funeral or memorial service. It can also be delivered at the funeral home the night before the funeral. Because of the difference in the funeral mass and a funeral service, it is preferred that the eulogy for Catholics be delivered in the funeral home the night before. This is for several reasons the most important is the length of the eulogy. It is extremely rare that a Protestant church would have more than one funeral service on any given day. Whereas, Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church often has two, three or up to four funeral Masses in one day not including the three scheduled masses everyday. The sheer numbers and the desire to accommodate all the families in the parish preclude lengthy eulogies. You would not want to postpone your funeral because another family took 45 minutes to eulogize a member of their family. Think about it, come talk to us and we will help you. 259544N0717
