The Charity of the Month for July is: Rebuilding Together Long Island

Rebuilding Together Long Island is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization. They are an affiliate of the national organization, Rebuilding Together. They provide free home repairs to the frail and elderly, our veterans, people with d i s a b i l i t i e s and families with children. Those who receive the free home repairs must have met their financial criteria. Their mission as an organization is to repair homes, revitalize communities and rebuild lives. They help Long Island’s economicallydisadvantaged homeowners so they can live in comfort and safety while maintaining their independence (RTLI does not service the Hamptons). This organization performs repairs including carpentry, electrical, plumbing and home modifications (including wheelchair ramps for the physically challenged), weatherization, installation of smoke alarms, back and front yard clean-up and more. Since 1992 they have provided repairs to over 2,600 homeowners in need at a current pace of over 150 projects annually within Nassau and Suffolk. After featuring a powerful testimonial last week, I’d like to feature another testimonial this week to show just how much of an impact the work of this organization has on the Long Island community. One thankful Long Island resident that has received help from RTLI said, “Your organization is truly a blessing to people like me who have no one and no finances at all to ever cover all the fixings. You’ve made it possible for me to have some peace of mind so I can still be able to stay in my home, the only “roots” I know.”

1) Volunteer. They are looking for volunteers to work hands on with a crew performing home repair work. Individuals do not have to have specific handyman skills, training is available. All volunteers must be at least 18 years old. Additionally, they are looking for a licensed Plumber or Electrician to volunteer their time and skills to help on specific projects. Lastly, they are in need of home visitors to walk through the homes of needy individuals for a safety inspection. 2) Sponsor a Project. RTLI allows corporations to sponsor a project so they can see a positive impact on the life of a senior, veteran, disabled person or a family in need. This is a great opportunity team building and a community leadership opportunity for your employees. Why not demonstrate your organization’s commitment to community service and improving the quality of life on Long Island! 3) Attend a Meeting. Meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every month at their office located at 208 Route 109, Suite 204 in Farmingdale at 10 am. 4) Donate. Consider making a donation to their organization. Funding is a continuous requirement to support their efforts. Any and all donations are greatly appreciated. The money you donate stays on Long Island to help our Long Island neighbors! The Amityville Union Free School District Board of Education honored more than 60 staff members for their dedicated service on June 12. Two dozen of the honorees are retiring from the district, while others were recognized for milestone anniversaries. Retirees included teachers Dr. Nicola Beckles, Barbara Bielecka-O’Doherty, Ricki Budnick, Robin Golub, Reynolds Hawkins, Dr. Judy Ann Hurst, Donna Jones, James Napoli, Peggy O’Connor, Jo Anne Rubin, Laurie Scott, Carol Seehof, Diane Smith, Karen Starkey, Roxanne Tannenbaum and Charles Zuar, teacher assistant Theresa O’Connor, custodians Keith Ambrosino, William Carmen and Ruth Corporan, nurse Carol Bosch, cook Alice Samuel and food service worker Caroline Rund. The board additionally recognized staff members who have reached 20, 25 and 30 years of employment

in Amityville. Colleagues shared kind words and told stories about the honorees. In addition to saying goodbye to many staff members, the board also approved the appointments of several new teachers for the 2019-20 school year including five elementary teachers, two elementary special education teachers, a high school psychologist, a middle school science teacher, a high school social worker and a secondary physical education and health teacher. Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly announced that four board of education members earned recognition from the New York State School Boards Association for their participation in professional development opportunities and leadership workshops. President Carolyn Dodd received the Lifetime Achievement Award, Second Vice President Laura Pawlewicz and trustee Susan Benard Handler earned the

Mastery Award and trustee Allie McDonough received the Excellence Award. First Vice President Juan Leon earned the Mastery Award earlier this year. Representatives from BBS Architects and Park East Construction provided their monthly construction update from the March 2016 facilities bond that was approved by voters. Progress continues on the addition to the high school, which remains on target for completion in August 2020. The window replacement is nearly complete at Edmund W. Miles Middle School. Classroom and bathroom renovations will take place this summer at Northwest and Northeast elementary schools along with other improvements. At the Park North Administration building, masonry repairs have finished, while work continues on the new ADAcompliant ramp and stairs for the back entrance.

O’Connell Copiague High School’s 2019 valedictorian, Aaron Eng, was honored for his achievements, dedication and commitment at the 25th annual Suffolk County School Superintendents Association Valedictorian Luncheon on May 30. Thomas Mannina, 5, of Copiague and Valetina Arevalo, 7, also of Copiague are heading to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, to compete in the 2019 AAU Taekwondo National Championships July 1–6 with the goal of earning gold medals in Olympic Sparring. Thomas and Valentina train several hours a day

at their dojang Copiague Champions Taekwondo, working on breaking, sparring, weapons and form on their way to achieving their next belt and eventually their black belt. In addition to general classes, they participate in an advanced training program, through which they further hone their sparring techniques in

small-class sessions with one-on-one attention from the instructors. Thomas and Valentina are among a group of students (ages 5 to 15) representing Copiague Champions and the community at the AAU Taekwondo National Championships against the best athletes in the country.

BOCES SCHOLARSHIP RECIPIENT - Colleen Garofola, a third grade teacher at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District, was honored at a brunch held by Western Suffolk BOCES on June 5. Eighth Graders Celebrate Copiague Middle School’s eighth graders celebrated the end of their middle school years and the start of their academic journey at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School during their moving up ceremonies on June 25 at the Copiague Middle School auditorium. The students marched into the ceremony to “Pomp and Circumstance” played by members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society. Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon addressed the soon-to-be middle school graduates. “When you moved up from the elementary schools to the middle school three years ago, I am sure you never thought the time would pass as quickly as it did,” Dr. Bannon said. “Because the time goes so quickly, we want to be sure that you take advantage of what the high school has to offer you. High school isn’t only about academics; there’s so much more to do outside the school day. There are more than 40

clubs at the high school, musical groups and sports – find something that interests you. I encourage you to get involved. You don’t want to be someone who looks back four years from now and says, ‘I wish I had or I should have tried.’ Instead be someone who says, ‘I did it all and I have no regrets.’” Class representative Emmylie Coreas spoke during the first ceremony of the day about her threeyear middle school journey. “As we went through middle school, we all started to build character, maturity, responsibility and growth,” she said. “The immense support of the teachers, staff and administrators helped us to grow. I hope we leave the middle school with a feeling of achievement and each one of us feels proud of their hard work.” Copiague Middle School Principal Andrew Lagnado then introduced the students as the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Class of 2023. “As you enter this next phase of your education, be

sure to remember a few important things that will set you up for success,” he said. “Stay involved in all the positive things that are offered at our high school. There are so many wonderful academic and extracurricular activities for you to take advantage of. Try a new activity, a new sport, take an interesting elective, get out of your comfort zone and take a risk. Stay motivated, focused and goal driven. Go that extra mile because what you put into it will determine what you get out of it. These next few years will lay the groundwork for your futures. saw members of this year’s graduating class traverse through the middle school halls for the annual senior walk. In three years, it will be their turn, and by that time they will be well prepared for the challenges of college, careers and the world. Dr. Kelly noted that it is an exciting time in the district for the ninth graders. A major renovation and expansion project is under way at the high school, and once completed in about a year those students will get to enjoy new classrooms, state-of-the-art science labs, an indoor athletic complex and upgraded library media center. Administrators and teachers presented students with several awards. They recognized the ninth graders with the

top grade in each subject as well as those who have sustained high grades during their middle school years. The Amityville Teachers Association Award of Excellence went to Mikhail Ankudovych and Andielynn Llamas while New York State Comptroller Award was presented to Brandon Dennis. Brandon and Samanta Molina also earned the Attorney General’s Triple C award for courage, character and commitment. Scott Pineda was recognized for his perfect attendance. Warrior of the Year honors went to Kayla Marrero and Bryan Vanegas. Mr. Mitchell introduced a new award this year, Warrior the Year faculty members, which was presented to Erica Azzara and Kerry Kearney.

William G. Houston, age 94, died on June 28, 2019. As promised, Bill died at home with the singing and prayers, laughter and tears, and loving arms of his family around him. Just for now. Bill was born on March 24, 1925 to William F. and Dorothy (Weidner) Houston in Valley Stream, LI. He was employed by the Amityville Post Office for 32 years. Bill leaves his wife of 70 years, Joyce (nee Nicholson), children Laura and Michael Neville, Linda and Albert Costabile, and James Houston; granddaughters Elizabeth and Erin Wirth; sister -in-law Edna Kaufmann: dozens of nieces and nephews: and his Angel Aide Huguette Francois. We all love him and miss him so already. Who will ever help us laugh again? His life was celebrated, Light Travels Unlike other light, which scatters, laser light travels in only one direction.

Seniors Shine Principal Joseph Agosta welcomed the audience and praised the students for their passion and motivation. “You are here today because of your unwavering drive for success every day,” he said. “Thanks to the help of these scholarships and support of the local community, these students are beginning their college careers with a solid foundation.” Surrounded by family and friends, as well as members of the board of education, central and high school

administration and teaching staff, more than $93,000 in local, memorial and organizational scholarships were presented to deserving seniors. In addition, students were presented with the Principal’s Recognition Award and the New York State Department of Education Academic Excellence Awards. To close out the evening, Mr. Agosta presented awards to the Top 10 students in the Class of 2018.

“A Million Dreams” was the theme of this year’s kindergarten movingup program at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District on June 21. Kindergartners performed songs at morning and afternoon ceremonies for their families. Principal Dr. Pauline Collins said that all songs were about dreams and aspirations including “Big Dreams,” “Get Fired Up,”

“The Climb,” “A Dream is a Wish Your Heart Makes” and more. Students worked with their kindergarten teachers as well as music teacher Nicole Altamura to learn the lyrics and choreography. Children performed on a stage flanked by rainbow balloon displays. Posters throughout the gymnasium had inspiration messages like “Everything starts with a dream” and “Keep calm and dream big.” Before each ceremony

began, guests enjoyed a photo slideshow set to music featuring class photos and pictures of activities throughout the year. Dr. Collins had high praise for the students, who worked hard this year and completed the first step on their journey to becoming Amityville Memorial High School’s Class of 2031. “They are ready for first grade,” she said. “They’re reading and they’re writing. We are so proud of them.”

Orchestra Groups Are Golden A trio of orchestra ensembles from the Amityville Union Free School District received gold ratings at the New York State School Music Association’s Major Organization Assessment Festival. Earning the top honors were the Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School sixth grade

orchestra under the direction of Christine Klimek, the Edmund W. Miles Middle School orchestra conducted by Bianca Ferrante and the Amityville Memorial High School orchestra led by Ms. Ferrante. According to NYSSMA assessment guidelines, a gold rating is awarded to ensembles that

have demonstrated an “outstanding level of technical and artistic skill in each of the evaluated categories.” Those areas included tone, intonation, balance, technique, accuracy/execution, rhythm and interpretation. Each ensemble performed three pieces for the judges.
