Showcasing Student Achievements Copiague School District recognized its finest artists and student achievements during a special ceremony held prior to the June 19th board of education meeting. District administrators, faculty and board members gathered with invited students and their guests in the Copiague Middle School auditorium to celebrate their successes. Chosen by the Copiague Board of Education, the Student Recognition Awards highlight students for their outstanding achievements in their

academic, fine arts or community service. They are presented twice a year to a small number of students for their special accomplishments. “Publicly recognizing excellence is our way of celebrating some of the great successes of the Copiague schools’ programs and, at the same time, enabling us to showcase outstanding role models to our school community,” said Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon. Twenty students

were honored during the ceremony, as board members read a brief description from teachers and principals on why the students were chosen for the award. The 2017 Superintendent’s Art Gallery inductees and Fine Arts Festival crowd favorites were on display for the audience to enjoy. Now in its 21st year, the Superintendent’s Art Gallery began when the Copiague art teachers selected several pieces of student artwork to display. Over the years, the

collection has grown to provide a showcase of student artwork in corridors and offices in each of the schools. Each of the framed pieces is identified by a brass plate noting the student-artist’s name, grade level and year the piece was completed. Crowd favorite art pieces – four in total this year from the elementary, middle school and high school – are also chosen by the Copiague community during the annual Fine Arts Festival.

Of Summer Memories and Staycations Summer is upon us, officially, and for some that means making a getaway to tropical islands, upstate resorts or seaside chalets; essentially, anywhere but here. For me, I look at this season of warmth and sunshine as a perfect opportunity to enjoy all that Long Island has to offer. Home sweet home, indeed. Our little neck of the woods certainly has no shortage of pristine beaches, whether you prefer the smooth sand and surf of the south shore, or the seashell-encrusted terrain of the north shore. From the North Fork wineries, to the South Fork shopping hamlets, there is literally something for everyone to enjoy. Personally, I have always been a big fan of the “staycation.” Throw in a day trip to Manhattan or any of the boroughs, and you can literally travel from coast to coast over a four-day weekend and never run out of sights to see. No matter how many times I’ve visited the Fire

Island Lighthouse, the Montauk Lighthouse or any number of tourist attractions in New York City, I always find a new angle to appreciate, a slightly different perspective to photograph. Of course, with a holiday such as the 4th of July, it’s always nice to view a few fireworks. With rare exception, this has generally meant sitting out on the deck in hopes that the neighbors had managed to obtain some sparkly explosives, or, if it wasn’t too crowded, taking a ride down to the local town beach to view the show from across the Bay. One year, a friend and I were inspired to check out the annual show at Eisenhower Park. After realizing that we should have probably allowed more time, resorting to parking on the side of Hempstead Turnpike and then wandering aimlessly around the park after having somehow missed the main entrance - we arrived. Or so we thought. We had literally walked into what was the staging setup for

the fireworks show. Talk about a front row seat. After hurriedly realizing this was not, in fact, the viewing area, we wound up walking/running what seemed like miles, following the distant sounds of explosions, until we came upon the rest of the crowd, who had most likely gotten there hours before. As we set up our blanket and settled down to watch what remained of the show, there was one final burst of color in the sky. And then… silence. The end. And that, ladies and gentlemen, was the first and last “real” fireworks show I have ever attended. A priceless memory nonetheless, one that is fondly reflected upon whenever the holiday nears. Here’s hoping everyone has a safe summer and enjoys whatever adventures it may bring. Just remember, you need not travel far to see beautiful sights… and make beautiful - if not brief - memories.

A Class of Many Firsts pioneers,” Mr. Plaia said. “You will be hearing from many of them in the future. They have helped put Amityville on the map.” Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly said that as ninthgraders, their high school career has already begun. Numerous awards were also presented including the President’s Award for Educational Excellence to all students who made the High Honor Roll during every quarter of middle

school, and the President’s Award for Educational Achievement for those who consistently made the Honor Roll. Assistant Principal Kristy Pagliari and Dean of Students Earl Mitchell announced the Warriors of the Year in each subject area. Two students were named Warriors of the Year for the entire grade: Aaliyah Hunt and Jeffrey Garcia. Four students were recognized for perfect attendance this year and one, Joshua Fernandez, didn’t miss a day of school for the past three years. Mary Dexter was named the highest academic achieving student and Joseph Slack received the County Executive’s Public Service award.

Warriors Take on the World Clad in red and silver caps and gowns, Amityville Memorial High School’s senior class had their final moment together. The 208 members of the Class of 2017 received their diplomas on June 24th during a ceremony filled with excitement and encouragement. Principal Dr. Lois Etzel said that their successes are a testament to the love and support of their families. She also asked the graduates to reflect on the teachers and staff members who have touched their lives in high school and throughout their time in the Amityville Union Free School District. “Where did the time go?” commented Superintendent Dr. Mary T. Kelly, who noted that much of the class has been together since kindergarten. She

encouraged them to value their friendships and treasure their memories as they move on to the next chapter of their lives. Valedictorian Esteban Idrovo Ponce and salutatorian Lawrence Haave told their classmates that their best days are still to come. “These past years shouldn’t be the highlight of your life,” Lawrence said. “Go on to do amazing things.” “None of us have made it just yet,” Esteban added. Class President Madison Daly compared the last 13 years of school to a book. They had their introduction in kindergarten, the rising plot of high school, the climax of senior year and the resolution of graduation. “My only hope that we’ll meet again,” she said. Graduation marked the end of a month of

celebratory activities including senior awards, the senior walk through the middle school and elementary schools, and college athlete signings. The graduates were handed their bright red diploma holders from Dr. Etzel and Dr. Kelly, and received congratulatory handshakes and hugs from board of education members as they crossed the stage. The ceremony concluded with an impassioned speech by Board President Terry Fulton, who encouraged the graduates to use the wisdom and insight they have gained to make good decisions going forward. He said it is now up to them to determine how far they will continue their educations. “You are Amityville Warriors,” he said. “Never, ever give up.”

A trend-setting class graduated from Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District, and they did so at the place where they will spend the next three years of their educational journey.
