With three state titles as a high school basketball player and several years on an NBA coaching staff, Jason Fraser had a lot to talk about as he met virtually with students at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School on June 10. But the most important messages were about getting a good education and having a positive attitude. Mr. Fraser was the latest Amityville alumnus to share his success story with Park Avenue students and to offer words of encouragement and motivation. In speaking with third graders, he discussed his childhood in Amityville and how his love
of basketball developed. Students were excited to hear that they play at the same parks where he transformed into one of the top high school players in the country. He graduated from Amityville Memorial High School in 2002, where he won three state championships as a member of the varsity basketball team, before playing for Villanova University. Later, Mr. Fraser became an assistant coach for the Phoenix Suns and is now the assistant athletic director at Skyline Preparatory High School in Phoenix. This year, he was inducted into the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame.
Mr. Fraser emphasized the value of hard work, determination and good character. Recalling a story of people doubting his own chances for future success, he reminded students that they are in control of their own destiny. The videoconference ended with a question-andanswer session. In April, 1999 Amityville Memorial High School graduate Raj Parekh, the acting United States attorney in the Eastern District of Virginia, spoke with Park Avenue students, followed in May by former NFL player Darrel Young, from the Class of 2005.
Amityville Board Shows Appreciation The Board of Education of the Amityville Union Free School District recognized nearly 40 staff members who are either retiring or have achieved a milestone level of service to the district. Staff Recognition Night, which was held on June 9, is an annual tradition to honor administrators, teachers and support staff for their dedication to Amityville’s students. Retirees include teachers Joan Peshler, Elbert Platt, Christine Quigley, Laurette Roddin, Deborah Ross and Susan Rutigliano; teacher assistants Susan McDougall, Alfreta
Lidge, Patricia Monaco, Kathleen Rousseau and Yuko Suzuki; custodians James Carrington, Bernard Ricks, Anthony Tolliver and George Williams; and clerical staff Barbara Miller and Karen Petermann. Several staff members were also recognized for milestone service anniversaries with the district. 20 years: Mary Abbruscato, Nicole Altamura, Daren Aversa, Michelle Eastwood, Steven Gafarian, Selina Gibbons, Francine John, Ronnie Johns, Mary-Ellen Loiacono, Joan Peshler, Susan Rutigliano, Lauren
James Seubert, Diane Stokes and Colleen Vanni. 25 years: Sherefer Arrington, Angela Gibson, Adriana Gray, Michael Greco, William Maisel and Sikes Reese. 30 years: Donnell Lewis, Karen Petermann, Deborah Ross, Steve Wexler and Gail Wittke. The Board of Education also presented a certificate of recognition to boys cross country coach Stephanie Barnes, who was named the League 7 Coach of the Year by the Suffolk County Track and Field Coaches Association.

Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment. Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament. “Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain. Conflict between the colonies had been going on for at least a
year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military.com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the
formation of the United States of America. A total of 56 delegates signed the document. Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures. Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.” However, the National Archives says it was also customary that, since Hancock was the president of the Continental Congress, he be the first person to sign the document centered below the text. The Pennsylvania Evening Post was the first newspaper to print the Declaration of Independence on July 6, 1776. Learning Comes Alive At Northeast Family Night Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District hosted its first inperson event of the year for families on May 27. Summer Family Learning Night featured a variety of English language arts, math and science activities. Teachers and staff worked together to create a safe and engaging
learning experience for pre-K students and their families. Learning centers allowed children to build upon lessons throughout the school year. Children practiced their letter and sound recognition with alphabet BINGO, enhanced their knowledge of numbers in musical squares and explored life cycles by planting seeds.
They also learned how to keep their literacy skills sharp over the summer by keeping journals. Educational resources were also provided to the families including takehome activities for the summer and information from the Amityville Public Library.

According to the National Fire Protection Association, roughly half of the injuries involving grills are thermal burns. Of the approximately 16,600 patients who visit emergency rooms for injuries involving grills each year, 8,200 are treated for thermal

Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! Anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at this farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. The farm is proud to continue operating, however it is in need of some repairs, such as plumbing assistance, fountain repair and roofing work. If you or someone you know would be willing to donate their time and skills to assist in any of these projects, it would be such a blessing to their farm. Depending on the season, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm has a variety of farm work that volunteers can assist with, such as planting, weeding, harvesting, working in the greenhouse and property maintenance. If you are interested in volunteering, please visit their website and fill out their Volunteer Waiver Form and the contact the farm

It it suggested that volunteers bring sunscreen and any food or drink they may need. Lastly, Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is holding a Fall Harvest Festival on October 2nd (rain date October 3rd) from 12PM-5PM. There will be games for kids, bounce houses, face painting, pumpkins, local organic produce, country line dancing, vendors, food trucks and an overall fun time for your entire family! The History Of America’s Independence Day Few summertime holidays elicit as much excitement as the Fourth of July, also known as Independence Day in the United States. Each year, family, friends and revelers anticipate the arrival of the holiday so they can host barbecues, enjoy the sun, listen to their favorite summertime tunes, and commemorate the freedoms afforded by the monumental events that led to the holiday’s establishment. Independence Day became a federal holiday in 1941, but July 4th has stood as the birth of American independence for much longer. July 4th marks a pivotal moment in the American Revolution. According to PBS, the colonies were forced to pay taxes to England’s King George III despite having no representation in the British Parliament. “Taxation without representation” became a battle cry and was one of several grievances colonists had with Great Britain. Conflict between the colonies had been going on for at least a year before the colonies convened a Continental Congress in Philadelphia in June of 1776, says Military. com. On July 2, 1776, the Continental Congress voted
in favor of independence from England. Two days later, on July 4, 1776, delegates from the 13 colonies adopted the Declaration of Independence. The Declaration of Independence is an historic document drafted by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson was considered the strongest and most eloquent writer of the declaration writing committee charged with putting the colonies’ sentiments into words. Richard Henry Lee of Virginia was one of the first people to present a resolution for American independence, and his commentary was the impetus for the formal Declaration of Independence. A total of 86 changes were made to Jefferson’s original draft until the final version was adopted. The signing of the document helped to solidify independence, and eventually lead to the formation of the United States of America. A total of 56 delegates signed the document. Although John Hancock’s signature is the largest, it did not hold more weight than the other signatures. Rather, rumor has it, Hancock signed it so large so that the “fat, old King could read it without his spectacles.”
