Retirees Recognized

Working in pairs, second-graders helped the kindergartners create an American ﬂag using construction paper, scissors, glue and a white crayon to draw the stars. The Copiague School District celebrated the academic milestones of its fifth-grade students during Class Day Moving Up ceremonies held at their respective schools on June 16th and 17th. Administrators, family, faculty, friends and invited guests came together to recognize the graduating Class of 2016 at Deauville Gardens East, Deauville Gardens West, Great Neck Road and Susan E. Wiley elementary schools. During the ceremonies, students were honored for their outstanding academic achievements, citizenship and leadership. Awards for academic excellence in core subject areas, as well as presidential education

awards, were bestowed upon deserving fifthgraders. The students were treated to words of encouragement and congratulatory remarks from their fellow classmates as well as their respective principals. In between award presentations, students demonstrated their talents and entertained the audience by performing musical selections. During her address to the fifth-graders at Deauville Gardens East and Great Neck Road, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon advised them to take advantage of the opportunities that are afforded to them during the next phase of their

careers in the Copiague school system. “Everyone sitting in this room can be whatever they choose to be,” said Dr. Bannon. “However, you can’t do it by sitting back and letting life pass you by. Build on what you started at Deauville Gardens East Elementary School. This was the first step, and you are ready for the next step, which is middle school. I encourage you to make the most of what the middle school has to offer you.” As they heard their name called, students made their way to the front of the room where they received their diploma, which finalized the completion of this chapter in their educational journeys.

Each year, the students are recognized during a special ceremony held prior to the June board of education meeting. As part of the thirdgrade science curriculum, students in Marissa Pratt’s class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District studied the lifecycle of a butterﬂy. After watching caterpillars transform into butterﬂies before their own eyes, the students bid farewell to

their new insect friends as they were released into their natural environment. For the unit, the class received 10 caterpillars to observe as they underwent metamorphosis to become butterﬂies. Each student kept a Butterﬂy Journal where they logged their observations and drew pictures to accompany

their journal logs. As a class, the students gathered in a circle on the field behind the school where they released the butterflies into nature. The third-graders watched in amazement as the butterflies one by one left the habitat and fluttered into the air.

Literacy Day As part of the school’s Literacy Day program, students at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District received a visit from award winning author David Adler on June 10th. The Literacy Day program, coordinated by school librarian Tim Quinn, was created to help encourage students to read during the summer months. Leading up to the day, students attended the school’s book fair and selected from dozens of books and literature to purchase. To begin the assembly, they listened to a presentation by a representative from the Amityville Public Library who discussed the reading programs they offer during the summer. As an accomplished author, Mr. Adler explained to the students how he develops his ideas for book characters and the process of getting a book published. Since he began writing in 1967, after a career shift as a mathematics teacher, he has published nearly 200 fiction and nonfiction books. Some students were familiar with his popular children’s book series “Cam Jansen,” while others know him from his nonfiction texts that include biographies, historical and mathematics literature. In addition, students had the opportunity to participate in a meetand-greet with Mr. Adler, during which he autographed their books.

Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”

and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reﬂection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly

shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so. Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human. Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again! ‘Til then, this is Buddy, thanking readers once again for their continuous love and support. Your letters keep me swimming happily - until I find something else to grumble about, of course.

Fun in the Sun During the last few weeks of the school year, students at each of the Copiague School District’s four elementary schools – Deauville Gardens East, Deauville Gardens West, Great Neck Road and Susan E. Wiley – participated in a variety of outdoor activities

during the school’s field day celebration. The events allowed students to compete in both individual and teamrelated activities, which fostered their own athletic potential as well as their teamwork skills. The individual events included

Throughout the month of June, Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague Public School District hosted end-of-theyear picnic celebrations for students in kindergarten

through fifth grade. While enjoying the sunny weather, students and their families participated in various outdoor activities including hopscotch, hula hoop, bubbles and drawing

with chalk. Faculty members distributed watermelon slices and juice boxes for the students to enjoy.
