Starting a New Chapter

STARTING A NEW CHAPTER - Copiague Middle School eighth-grade students celebrated their moving up to the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School in a ceremony held on June 21st. Photo courtesy of: Copiague School District

More than 400 eighthgrade students from Copiague Middle School in the Copiague School District celebrated the end of their middle school days and the beginning of their high school years during two moving up ceremonies on June 21st at the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School auditorium. With central administrators, board of education members, families and invited guests

in attendance, the future Class of 2021 proceeded into the ceremony to “Pomp and Circumstance” played by select members of the Tri-M Music Honor Society and gathered on the stage to celebrate the culmination of their middle school careers. Copiague School District Superintendent of Schools Dr. Kathleen Bannon offered words of advice and encouragement to the future high schoolers.

“Take advantage of all the high school has to offer,” she said. “Your middle school teachers have prepared you well for the next chapter. Continue to work hard and put in the effort and you will continue to be successful. I challenge you to join the clubs, musical groups or sports that interest you. I encourage you to get involved in high school.”

The Scouts of Troop 284 Copiague recently participated in a dedication of an Eagle Project. The project, completed by Nicolas Hernandez of the Troop, was the culmination of many hours of planning and execution. Nicolas had the idea that Tanner Park needed something that the community would enjoy and use for many years - a 12x12 gazebo constructed facing the water with a beautiful view of Great South Bay. The idea of an Eagle Project is for a young man to demonstrate leadership. Well, that wasn’t the only thing on Nick’s mind. He wanted his Eagle Project to be in the memory of an Eagle Scout that is no longer with us, Joseph Alfred Ferriso. Joe was, and still is, an inspiration to Nick and
