Earlier this month Amityville Memorial High School hosted the traditional Pride Day, a district-wide celebration held annually as the school year comes to a close. The AMHS Jazz Ensemble, led by adviser Brian Carter, kicked off the evening with an energetic instrumental performance of “Superstitious” as made famous by Stevie Wonder. Fourth-grade teacher and returning Master of Ceremonies Marc Engler gave a few opening remarks to welcome an auditorium full of family, friends, faculty, staff and administration.

Students from the Northeast Elementary School led guests in the reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance. They also performed songs of celebration to set the upbeat and positive tone for the remainder of the evening during which students were presented with Star Awards commending their exemplary actions. Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Williams expounded on the true meaning behind Pride Night. “It’s about celebrating our kids and their accomplishments,” said Dr. Williams. “Tonight’s picnic is a

going-away present to celebrate a year well spent and all of the good work that was accomplished.” The gathering continued with performances by the Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School Orchestra, the Edmund W. Miles Middle School Chorus and an incredible 17-minute Disney song medley performance by Northwest Elementary School students, directed by Roxanne Tannenbaum. A wonderful time was had by all during the spirited celebration.

In the not too distant past, we completed the 50 days of Easter and what one of my professors of Theology likes to call our RAP session = Resurrection / Ascension / and Pentecost! Among the many dimensions of the Church, it’s a place where we can be a community and pray together….it’s what makes us the Body of Christ. Your Church needs you – get involved – be a greeter, a server, extraordinary minister, lector, etc. Help in any way that you can and it will give back to you. It allows us to leave our self-oriented lives and its daily pressures. It’s important that we work together for good and to strengthen our Catholic Family of Faith. The Church gives back with various programs to support our Communities; namely, Youth Ministries, Youth Service Corp., Summer Camp, Society of St. Vincent de Paul, the RCIA program, assistance to the sick, much-needed help to new mothers, and many others. Get to know your Church and its clergy and let them get to know you. Possibly check with your Parish about the creation of a Bible Study Program. And for those interested in getting more involved and whose Pastor supports the decision, I highly recommend the Pastoral Formation Institute (PFI); it’s part of the Diocese of Rockville Centre (http://www. drvc-faith.org/2013/01/pﬁ/). It’s a two-year program that’s educational, well structured, inspirational, and worth every dime! It’s time that we “take another look” at our religious heritage and become active members once again or for the ﬁrst time. Give it a chance – it can certainly enrich our lives; at least, it has mine! Summer “To Do” List By: Jamie Lynn Ryan I remember the moment like it was yesterday. Among the sea of caps and gowns, over the illustrious strains of Pomp & Circumstance… there he was, James Gandolfini, sitting one row behind my family at my college graduation. I could hear the buzz building behind me, as people started to notice. Why is he here? Is he speaking? Does he know someone who’s graduating? The fact that a celebrity was sitting among us was clearly the highlight for the thousand or so graduates on that day, some nine years ago, on the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. I remember being very aware of his presence, as every time I glanced over my shoulder at my own little cheering section… there he was. When I walked up to receive my “unofficial” diploma (the real

one would arrive several weeks later), I carried a small index card with my name written on it to hand to the Dean. “Jamie Lynn Ryan” they announced. As I looked up at the sea of faces, my eye once again fell on Mr. Tony Soprano himself, only this time, he was looking right back at me. And with a big grin and a wink, he began applauding. I couldn’t believe it. I found myself glancing over both shoulders to see if the acknowledgement was meant for someone else, but there was no one there. As I walked back to my seat with a giant, silly smile on my face, I began quietly counting down the seconds until I could run and tell my family what had just happened. He smiled at me. He winked. He clapped. For me. What a doll. Following the ceremony, we all realized that he was indeed there for someone, his own niece, who we had apparently been attending school with for the last four years.

Who knew! And once I was able to meet up with my family, my brother revealed that he had gotten to the graduation tent a little early to reserve a row of seats, only to find Mr. Gandolfini sitting there already. Reluctant to disturb him at that point, they exchanged a slight greeting. Now, as the crowd began to disperse, people began tentatively approaching him to shake hands, ask for an autograph, maybe a photo… Me, I didn’t want to bother him. Ironically, that very occasion came up this past Father’s Day, as my brother and I reminisced over how we should have stopped to talk to him… and then came the tragic news just three days later. What a shame. I didn’t have the honor of truly knowing Mr. Gandolfini, but his presence surely touched me on one of the most memorable days of my life. May he Rest In Peace.

Brightest Stars Shine The auditorium at Amityville Memorial High School was filled with proud parents, faculty and staff on June 6th as they celebrated the tremendous accomplishments of the class of 2013 at the school’s annual senior awards ceremony. Nearly 70 graduating seniors were presented with awards commemorating their years of hard work and dedication. Also in attendance were various members of the Amityville community and award donors to show their support for the honorees. The event began with opening remarks from

Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Williams and a presentation of the Triple C Award by Assistant Attorney General Patricia Hingerton to Linda Serrano for her “character, courage and commitment.” Next, attendees were treated to a video presentation in honor of the soon-tobe graduates, created by technology teacher Steven Carbo, which featured students sharing their favorite AMHS memories. More than 190 awards, scholarships, and distinctions were presented in categories such as academics, athletics, fine arts, character and service

throughout the ceremony. Also recognized were class salutatorian Jade Gaynor and valedictorian Hunter Iacovetti who received a combined 25 awards. “When you see students with a beginning like this you know that only good and better things are to come,” said high school interim principal Dr. Mary DeRose in her closing remarks. “We know that this is just the beginning of great success for these students.” Dr. DeRose also thanked the remaining members of the class of 2013 for their outstanding cooperation and positivity throughout the year.

Walking For A Cure To do their part to help find a cure for juvenile diabetes, Copiague’s Susan E. Wiley Elementary School teamed up with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation to host a Kids Walk To Cure Diabetes. According to the JDRF website, the Kids Walk program is an educational, in-school fundraising program with two goals: to educate students about type 1 and type 2 diabetes and the importance of a healthy lifestyle, and

to provide them with an opportunity to make a difference by raising money for type 1 diabetes. Organized by the Fit Club and its advisers Danielle Palladino and Christopher Uccellini, every class in the school walked a quarter mile around the perimeter of the school to help raise awareness and funds for the cause. “We felt that hosting this walk was a great culmination program for the Fit Club,” said Mr. Uccellini. “It all played well

with the healthy lifestyle, healthy choices program we’re teaching the children in the club.” To gear up for the event, the school hosted an assembly program, with JDFR’s co-chair of the Kids Walk program, Marta Gabrielli, informing the students about the disease and the ways they can help. At the end of the walk and fundraising campaign, the Wiley students had raised more than $3,100.
