Copiague Middle School students performed their version of “Schoolhouse Rock Live!” on June 11th. Directed by music teacher Kaitlin Schneekloth, the students danced and sang the songs made famous by the Emmy Award-winning 1970s Saturday morning cartoon series. The musical tells the story of a new teacher filled with nerves the morning of his first day of class. Various characters representing facets of his personality show him how to win his students over with imagination and music, through songs including “Just A Bill” and “Conjunction Junction.”

Working with Ms. Schneekloth to put together the pitch-perfect show were assistant directors Christina Aniello and Gina Occhiogrosso, props/costumes managers Kristing Alfarano, choreographer Joanna Capitelli, painting managers Jodie Embleton and Carlos Taveras, hair and makeup coordinator Stephanie Ingenito and set designer Lauren Lefkowtiz. In addition to the adult supervisors, middle school students worked behind the scenes acting as stage directors, lightening supervisors, set designers and more.

Wearing red, white and blue, and stars and stripes, students and staff at Copiague’s Deauville Gardens East Elementary School celebrated Flag Day on June 13th. During the ceremony, United States Army Sgt. Peter Brasile spoke to the students about the American ﬂag, while second-graders Rashad Heyward and Ava Reichelt gave the history of the ﬂag. There was also a group singalong of patriotic songs led by students in Natalia Brite’s kindergarten class, Philomena Russo’s first-

grade class and Ashley Price’s second-grade class. Once in awhile, amidst all your bad days, you’ll have a good day. A great day, even. Make sure you remember those days. Keep them safely in the pockets of your coat or in a jar on your desk, because you need to know that there are and will be better days. You need to remember how, on those days, you felt all warm inside, like you’ve just drunk a hot cup of tea, like a small ﬁre has ignited inside of you. Hold on to the warmth and never let it go. My eyes landed upon these words as I scanned through all the usual mundane drivel one tends to come across on Facebook, shared by one of my friends, and many before

her, from one of those sites which tend to cull such inspirational quotes and sayings. I did attempt to look up the original source, but to no avail; such is the gift and curse of the Internet, I suppose. In any case, whomever thought to put such eloquent words to a concept we all preach but seldom seem to practice – bravo! It is, essentially, just a rewording of the tried and true cliché to appreciate each and every day, to live life to the fullest, to know that “however good or bad a situation is, it will change” (yet another of those “famous” unattributed sayings). But, sometimes, we do need to be reminded. All

situations require appropriate perspective, something we often lack in the heat of the moment. And the happy times? Well they tend to get lost in the shufﬂe, swept aside in favor of dwelling on those days that didn’t go quite according to plan. I think that’s why I love photography so much. Memories are priceless, to be sure; but there is something truly precious – and irreplaceable – about capturing that instant of happiness forever. These are the days to remember, ‘cause they will not last forever… so said one of Long Island’s finest songwriters, Billy Joel. Best to store them away for a rainy day – or, in my case, snap a photo for posterity.

For just $15, your child can go fishing with the P.A.L. on one of eight dates in July and August. This fee covers four hours of fishing aboard the Taryn Ann fishing boat, poles, bait, cleaning of the fish caught and supervision by P.A.L. personnel. Each child may go on two of these outings. Senior advocates are County representatives who come out into the community and assist seniors with information gathering, completion of eligibility or recertification applications and referrals to appropriate community agencies. “Nobody should ever have to go without food, medical attention or other necessities, which is why our senior advocates literally bring these vital programs and services

directly to our seniors in their own communities,” said Legislator D’Amaro. Fourth-graders at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School received a hands-on science lesson when the Long Island Science Center visited the school on June 5th. To kickoff the day of science, the students participated in a grade-level assembly titled “All About Air,” led by science center educator Judy Isbitiren. During the assembly, Mrs. Isbitiren demonstrated the properties of air using

balls, balloons, bags, a hair dryer and more using student volunteers. The students learned that air takes up space, has weight, and exerts pressure. Following the assembly, the science continued with three breakout sessions of ice cream science. Each class performed hands-on experiments that explored the molecular nature of matter, culminating in the production of a “crystallized concoction,” better known as ice cream.
