Reconfiguration plans in the Amityville Union Free School District will go ahead for the 2020-21 school year as construction on new wings at Amityville Memorial High School and Northwest Elementary School remain on schedule for completion by August. Although reduced manpower at the two sites due to the COVID-19 pandemic slowed progress, representatives from BBS Architects and Park East Construction reported to the board of education at a June 10 virtual meeting

that all timelines will be met. The addition at the high school, which will include classrooms, science labs, an indoor athletic complex and expanded cafeteria, was 85% complete as of the board meeting. Contractors had begun painting the gymnasium lobby and installing bathroom fixtures, ﬂoor and wall tiles. Lighting installation also continued in classrooms and on the exterior of the building. Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for over 30 years, however she has experience in many other industries as well. She has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. She is wellrounded and truly one of the kindest people I have ever met. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping others look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities, that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled. She always travels to her customers so they can enjoy her services in the comfort of their home or living space. Her goal is to provide each and every one of her clients with a warm, happy, positive and empathetic experience before, during and after each visit. She also incorporates her love of social justice and advocacy into her business practice by using only vegan products. Unlike your average hair salon, Scanlon’s uses fresh new sanitized tools and capes on all her clients. She now also offers one on one personal service with gloves and masks, and will wash and sanitize any area which was touched during the visit. Additionally, if you would like to have your hair service done outside, Scanlon’s will gladly honor that request. “Everyone’s safety and comfort is our primary concern”, says owner Eileen Scanlon. Scanlon’s business model was always unique and special, however with everyone adjusting to the new normal, her services are becoming more and more desired. A young woman who loves Eileens services mentioned, “Being able to call up an experienced local and friendly hair

dresser during times like these where I am not comfortable going to a salon is so comforting. She will come to my house and give me a hair cut outside if I want. It doesn’t get much more refreshing than that.” Mary D. from Massapequa, a long-time client of Eileens also has only good things to share; “I live with a crippling disability and getting out is a challenge for me, especially in inclement weather. I’ve been using Eileen’s service for about 7 years now and I would not go back to a salon anytime soon. If I ever need anything from the store before she arrives I simply call her and she will pick it up for me. I live alone and if a light bulb goes out or I need to reach something in a closet that requires my mini ladder I feel comfortable asking Eileen to reach it for me. Scanlon’s vehicles are all easily identified because they are decorated with salon decals and sponsorship information from local businesses. lockers. The elevator will be installed within a few weeks. Because school buildings closed early, renovations to the existing high school began a month and a half ahead of schedule. Contractors started demolition of the science labs, which will be transformed into general classrooms. All renovations, which will include converting the gymnasium into a large music and art suite, are on track for completion in December 2020. Construction at Northwest on the new wing, which will house kindergarten classrooms and a small gymnasium, is 70% complete. Contractors have continued installing the exterior bricks, duct work, hot water pipes and wiring for electrical outlets, light switches, data and fire alarms. The reconfiguration will shift one grade at each building. As of September, the high school will house grades 9-12, Edmund W. Miles Middle School grades 6-8, Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School grades 3-5 and Northwest Elementary School grades K-2 with the creation of a full-day pre-K center at Northeast Elementary School. The board of education adopted new science resources for students in kindergarten through seventh grade to align with Next Generation Science Standards. A committee of administrators and teachers reviewed five different programs, selecting Amplify Science. A s s i s t a n t Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Andrea Pekar said that committee members liked its approach to science – do, talk, read, write and think. She said students

The Amityville Rotary Club made a contribution of four tablets to the Our Lady of Consolation Nursing and Rehabilitative Center in West Islip recently. The tablets will be used to help residents/ patients connect with family and friends, as well as provide them with the opportunity of having some recreational entertainment via technology. “We really appreciate them,” said Christine Centrone, director of therapeutic recreation at the Center. “Because of the pandemic, our residents and patients are facing challenges because they

do not have the daily social engagement with families that they are used to. As a result, they can lose mental status and social well-being.” The Amityville Rotary Club heard about the issue residents living in senior citizen and rehabilitation centers were having because their families could not visit them during the pandemic and decided to reach out to their members and others asking for new and gently used tablets and iPads, said Rotarian Virginia Belling who headed up the project for Amityville Rotary Club. The donations were

Vyas cleared out the equipment and provided power cords for them before the Rotary Club donated them to OLC.
