Bethel Hobbs Community Farm is a non-profit organization with a rich history. It is an 11 acre farm, located at 178 Oxhead Road in Centereach, and is ran entirely by volunteers. This community farm grows and harvests an average of over 50,000 pounds of fresh, organic produce, which then gets donated to over 11 food pantries / soup kitchens. They also offer CSA Memberships, educational programs, they host community events and they have a seasonal farm stand! If you live nearby the farm and would like to sign up for their Summer and or Fall CSA program, you can. Their crop shares are an easy way to guarantee farm fresh veggies for you and your family all season long. By joining their CSA program you will gain a connection to their farm and know exactly where your vegetables are coming from. You will receive a weekly share of nutritionally dense produce grown right in Centereach, while supporting your own neighbors. Their organically grown vegetables are harvested and packed the same day you receive them, cutting time and travel dramatically from field to fork. Members of their Summer CSA can expect to receive a wide variety of summer vegetables, including but not limited to, summer squashes, tomatoes, peppers, eggplants, cucumbers and a diverse array of greens. Members of their Fall CSA can expect to receive an assortment of winter squashes, potatoes, sweet potatoes, onions, carrots, beets, as well as an assortment of greens. Additionally, anyone is welcome to stop by and shop at their farm stand every Saturday from 10 AM - 3 PM, which started on June 12th and runs through October 10th. You will find organically grown produce and every purchase made will support the farm and their mission. Looking to show your support in another way? Volunteers are needed! Babylon Recognizes Local Student Who Published Children’s Workbook at 16 Town of Babylon Supervisor Rich Schaffer, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez and the rest of the Babylon Town Board recently recognized a young town resident who published a children’s workbook earlier this year. Favour Okodogbe, 16, of Amityville, is a senior at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School in West Islip, and will be attending the California Institute of Technology on a full-ride this fall. Okodogbe will study Computer Science and Business Economics and Management, and is the first student from

her high school to attend Caltech. Okodogbe’s parents, Rev. Victor Okodogbe and Pastor Maryqueen Okodogbe are co-pastors of the Mount Zion Gospel Tabernacle Church in West Babylon. Earlier this year, Okodogbe published a children’s workbook, A Workbook Just For You, which contains material for any child between the ages of 1-7. From ABCs to 123s, the workbook covers all the basics of what a child needs upon entering school. Okodogbe skipped the 1st grade as a child and is now headed to college in

California at the age of 16. She published the book in hopes of inspiring children to learn like she did at a young age. The courtyard was buzzing on June 10 and 11 at Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District for the annual Father’s Day picnic. Every pre-K student invited a special guest for an hour and a half of family fun time. Teacher Yvette Carman said that the Father’s Day celebration is a tradition spanning at least a dozen years and is a springtime activity that children look forward to. It was an extra special moment for the

pre-K students because, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it was only the second in-person event for families this year at Northeast. Ms. Carman noted that celebrations like the Father’s Day picnic keep parents connected to the school community, and strengthen the homeschool partnership. “It was so nice to get the families in, to see them and have them see what we’re doing with the children,” she said.

There were several activities at the picnic including a bean bag toss, blowing bubbles, playing hopscotch, a hula hoop contest and taking pictures together at the photo booth. Each child and special guest got to build and decorate a birdhouse together. Before the celebration, students made Father’s Day gifts. Each class came up with its own idea including cards, picture frames, painted rocks and oversized ties.

FASNY Offers Lifesaving BBQ And Grilling Tips As vaccinated New Yorkers begin to gather for nicer weather, many will be dusting off and firing up their outdoor grills. With COVID precautions motivating more people to cook and grill at home, The FASNY urges all New Yorkers to follow some basic rules to avoid accidents and injuries, and to remember not to hesitate to call for help needed. “The warmer weather will certainly encourage New Yorkers to break out their BBQ’s for outdoor cooking,” said FASNY President John Farrell.  “We want all residents to stay safe as we celebrate the coming summer days and consider basic grill safety tips. We also remind everyone to continue to follow applicable social

distancing rules to keep their families, and guests, safe.” According to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), from 2014-2018, an average of 19,700 patients per year went to emergency rooms because of injuries involving grills. Gas grills were involved in an average of 10,600 home fires per year, including 3,900 structure fires and 4,900 outdoor fires annually. Keep everyone safe by following the important tips below: Tips from the NFPA and FASNY: Propane and charcoal BBQ grills should only be used outdoors; The grill should be placed well away from the home, deck railings and out from under eaves and overhanging branches;

Keep children and pets at least three feet away from the grill area; Keep your grill clean by removing grease or fat buildup from the grills and in trays below the grill; Never leave your grill unattended while in use; Always make sure your gas grill lid is open before lighting it; Always use foodapproved fire starters for wood grills and smokers. Obituary Marilyn E. Brooks, 92, Loving Wife, Mother, Grandmother, Great Grandmother Mrs. Brooks passed away peacefully on Wednesday June 2nd. Mrs. Brooks was born at home in Bellmore, N.Y. in 1928, the daughter of Harry J. Blank and Helen (Berry) Blank and sister of the late Harry Blank Jr, and Robert Blank. She attended Bellmore Elementary School, and W.C. Mepham Central High School, class of 1946. During World War II she served as a volunteer worker for the American Red Cross as a messenger. Following the war Marilyn met and married the late Owen E. Brooks in 1950. Mr. and Mrs. Brooks located to Amityville where they embraced everything the community offered. Together they raised

their family, sang in church choirs, and sailed the Great South Bay. Mrs. Brooks was a proud member and past president of the Amityville Woman’s Club, a member of Unqua Corinthian Yacht Club, a member of the Amityville Historical Society, and a member of the Massapequa Reformed Church. Above all else, Mrs. Brooks was a mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and a loving, caring wife. She put her many interests beneath her devotion to her family. She always made herself available to her children when coming home from school or needed support in any way. She served as a Brownie Leader, Cub Scout Den Mother, Sunday School teacher, and School Parents Advisory Committee

member. Mrs. Brooks was predeceased by her daughter, Alison Brooks Callahan (Thomas J.) who passed away after a heroic eight year battle with breast cancer. She is survived by two sons, Owen E. Brooks, Jr. (Margaret) and Jonathan E. Brooks (Elice) and nine grandchildren, LCDR Owen E. Brooks III, USN (Jayme), Rev. William C. Brooks (Alana), Kathryn E. Callahan, Robert T. Brooks, Peter T. Callahan, Meghan E. Brooks, Rebecca M.E. Brooks, Rachael E.M. Brooks, and Lauren C. Brooks, and one great grandson Jacob O. Brooks Gifts may be made to the Massapequa Reformed Church. Burial will be in the family plot in East Marion, Long Island.
