I recently read an article in the latest issue of Editor & Publisher magazine which touched on the apparent surge in the success of community newspapers over the last several years, a direct counterpoint to the oftpeddled theory that “print is dead.” The majority of credit for these weeklies’ steady success seems to point to their unique ability to provide extremely localized content that, quite simply, cannot be found anywhere else. Northwell Health has relocated its Long Island headquarters to a 100,000-square-foot building at 2000 Marcus Avenue in New Hyde Park. The leased building is home to about 300 employees within Northwell Health administration, including executive leadership and the health system’s strategic planning, legal, marketing and communications, managed care, patient and customer experience and corporate

security departments, as well as the Northwell Health Foundation. The three-story building consists of 33,000-squarefeet of garage space and 4,000-square-feet of conference space, including a conference center that can accommodate 275 people and is outfitted with integrated audio visual technologies, including a 30 foot wide video wall broadcasting Northwell Health and Event information. Other

amenities will include a café operated by Unidine with a special focus on healthy choices. The company’s previous Long Island headquarters at 145 Community Drive in Great Neck is being used for other Northwell Health staff. The health system also has New York City headquarters at 130 E. 59th Street in Manhattan, where it occupies three floors of a 16-story building.

Celebrating Athletes To celebrate the studentathletes who plan to continue playing their sport at the collegiate level, the Amityville Memorial High School athletic department hosted a College Athlete Celebration on June 3rd. Coordinated by Evan Farkas, director of athletics, physical education and health, parents, coaches and district administrators gathered to honor the students’ dedication and commitment to their sport and to continuing their academic careers. During the event, each of the nine student-athletes shared information about themselves including,

the sport they play, what college they are headed to and what they look forward to most about attending college. After each student spoke, in unison, they placed the hat or helmet of the college they will attend on their head. “Today is about celebrating the hard work, dedication and the commitment they made for, not only the last four years, but way beyond that,” said Farkas. During the school’s annual Senior Awards Ceremony, more than 75 graduating seniors at Amityville Memorial High School received an excess of 200 scholarships and awards on June 2nd. The ceremony featured opening remarks from Principal Dr. Clinton Grant, followed by Superintendent Dr. Mary Kelly and a rousing rendition of the national anthem from senior Amanda Boegle. Produced by Steve Carbo, the audience enjoyed a video montage of the seniors’ high school year.

The awards and scholarships were a combination of indistrict recognitions for academic, athletic or artistic excellence, and local community organizations wishing to bestow endowments for a range of accomplishments including community service. Organizations sponsoring scholarships included the American Legion Post 1015, the U.S. Army, the Kiwanis Club of Amityville, the Amityville Women’s Club, Amityville Chamber of Commerce, Bay Village Civic Association and the

Amityville Parent-Teacher Council, among others. In an auditorium filled with students, family and friends, administrators, faculty and members of the board of education were on hand to congratulate the students for their accomplishments. With recessional music performed by Director of Fine Arts Dr. Fran Fernandez, Dr. Grant concluded the event with closing comments and attendees were invited to the courtyard for light refreshments.
