Amityville Memorial High School senior Esteban Idrovo Ponce was named an Outstanding Science Student of the Year by the Suffolk Regional Chapter of the Science Teachers Association of New York State. He was honored at the annual dinner on May 23rd at Villa Lombardi’s where he was joined by his parents and science teacher Mary-Ellen Loiacono. Esteban was recognized for his exceptional academic progress

throughout his high school career and his interest in the sciences. He has taken and excelled at Advanced Placement science courses in biology, chemistry and physics, and has twice placed second in science bowls. Additionally, he is enrolled in the district’s Independent Science Research Program. The valedictorian of the Class of 2017, Esteban will attend Stony Brook University to study physics.

I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. Our Seasons Magazine was honored with second place in the Best Magazine category, a proud moment for our fledgling publication. While there, I had the opportunity to chat with several local journalists in attendance about topics ranging from the state of the media as a whole to our own publication’s role in the journalism community on Long Island. It brought to light the question of what, exactly, South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers’ mission has been since 1953, and how very unique a position we fill in the wider landscape of community weeklies. We have always categorized

ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is. As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication. Parents, teachers, coaches and scouting leaders are all welcome to participate in publicizing those individual

I remember being a student myself back at the end of high school and having my mom drop my graduation announcement off at the old office on Hoffman Avenue in Lindenhurst knowing that, the following week, I would receive my copy of “The South Bay” and find my picture inside. How exciting to be a part of the hometown paper; and to share the good news with all my friends and neighbors. The world of journalism is a broad one indeed, one that takes in many different styles and degrees of substance, and in the end provides a little something for everyone. Music teacher Jolene Maccarone said she was very impressed when he brought her the music, and very few changes were made before the performance. She said this was the first time in her 23 years teaching at Park Avenue that a studentwritten piece was included in a school concert. “His enthusiasm and his passion for music

stimulates his creativity,” she said. “He’s a great musician. Donovan has only been playing for two years and he can play two instruments beyond his level.” Donovan plays bass clarinet in the fifth-grade band and clarinet in the sixth-grade band. The tour of the district included classroom visits at an elementary school, middle school and high school. “From the minute I walked in, I felt very much at home in this district,” Ciak said. “I was very impressed with all of the 21st century learning going on in the classrooms. Students were fully emerged in learning and using high-level analysis.” At the elementary level, the visit showed the district’s use of technology with its 1:1 computing class and students using the zSpace virtual reality, 3-D computers. Copiague Middle School students demonstrated their earth science and English language arts skills, while science research students at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School presented some of their recent studies. “In the visit I conducted,

I was able to see exactly what public education was built for: addressing the needs of all of its students,” Ciak said. “This district is building its student body up from when they enter kindergarten. That type of planning and culture starts from above with a Board of Education and administration that knows what their students need to be successful.”

But to you I’m a playground, a jungle gym if you please, your watchdog and guardian, a teacher, a cook, a world of imagination not found in a book. I’ll teach you the things you need in life, while not knowing at all if I’m wrong or I’m right. Things will happen and items will break, but it’s O.K. we all make mistakes. My Dad did his best to try and teach me all things he knew, “One day you’ll see”. I just hope I can be as good a Dad to my kids as mine was to me. Kiwanis Breakfast Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School students received accolades and scholarships from the Kiwanis Club of Copiague during their annual breakfast on May 31st. Members of the Walter G. O’Connell Key Club were recognized with scholarships presented by Kiwanis Club president elect Phil Guerra. The Anthony Iannotta Scholarship of $1,000 was awarded to Lyndsey Wilson. The Robert McIntosh Scholarship was presented to Jackalyn Gonzalez and Sofie Wilson won the Warren

Gumbs Scholarship, both for $500. Additionally, six Key Club members were awarded $250 scholarships each: Ashley Burgos, Jenna Langan, Nicole Mikolajczak, Amorelle Penick, Tiana Roe and Nilsu Yildiz. Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Key Club president Alexandra Saczawa and vice president Joshua Taveras spoke about the many volunteer activities in which the club participated this year.
