EXHIBIT UNVEILED - The unveiling of the Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame’s exhibit was recently held at MacArthur Airport. Portraits and displays of prominent athletes, coaches, and other sports personalities that made a name for themselves in the Islip community now line the walls along the path that travelers take while embarking and disembarking aircraft. The Suffolk Sports Hall of Fame used to be housed in a permanent location, but was forced to close due to a lack of funds. Now the Hall of Fame organization is establishing exhibits at various locations throughout Suffolk County. The men and women featured at the MacArthur Airport exhibit are all specific to Islip Town, but the Hall of Fame’s focus is on the accomplishments of Suffolk County athletes as a whole.

Last night, I had the privilege of attending the annual Press Club of Long Island Media Awards, held at the Woodbury Country Club, honoring the best and the brightest of Long Island’s Journalists. This is the one night each year when we, as members of the press, have the opportunity to recognize fellow protectors of the First Amendment and to mix and mingle with those we admire from afar, on the pages of the weekly and daily newspapers, the

with, to pursue a career that many seem to frown upon, for considerably less money than other, far less impactful, careers. Crazy, right? Not when you step back and take stock of a crowd like that, on a night like that, and realize that, yes, it’s all worth it. Congratulations to all the winners, once again. I can only hope that, one day, I will be fortunate enough to stand among you. ‘Til then, I consider myself extremely lucky to be a mere observer, soaking in the inspiration from those who have come before me.

The ginkgo tree, which grows on campus, represents the strength of the Susquehanna community and the lifelong connection graduates have to the institution. In his commencement address, Dr. Glenn D. Steele Jr.,

president and CEO of Geisinger Health Systems, encouraged the graduates to always keep a piece of the community with them, and to remain positive in the face of the changes and challenges ahead. Members of the Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Hip-Hop Club presented their second annual hip-hop show, “Don’t Judge A CD By Its Cover.” Since the beginning of the school year, members of the club have been creating and composing original lyrics, music and poetry, as well as crafting short skits, centered on a campaign of acceptance and encouraging students to see past their individual or cultural differences in order to fight against stereotypes. “This year, our show included realistic portrayals of difficult situations faced by kids in our school,” said HipHop Club President Tatyana Bellamy-Walker. “We worked with the guidance department and the One Mind Club to put

together scenes, including tough topics such as homelessness, self-harm and abusive relationships. Our hope with our performance is that people will learn they shouldn’t judge others based on their appearance or what they seem to be, because everybody has something that they’re going through at home. No one is perfect.” As the show featured many difficult and personal situations, each member of the audience was provided with a crisis card that included phone numbers to local hotlines that can assist students who may need help. MY ACHING JAW

QUESTION: My jaw is killing me! The pain can be excruciating, sometimes like a sharp stab, or just an ache. It usually occurs in the area just in front of the ear, and is particularly painful on opening or closing my mouth. What could possibly be the problem? ANSWER: This type of jaw problem is referred to as the TEMPOROMANDIBULAR JOINT SYNDROME. For simplicity sake, it is often called TMJ SYNDROME. The strange aspect of this syndrome is that often aches and pains in other parts of the body are also caused by an inflamed or pathologic jaw joint. For example, headaches, earaches, ringing, buzzing, clicking, popping, and scraping noises in the ears, stiff or aching neck of upper back muscles, shoulder pains, and other upper body/neck/head problems have been traced to primary problems in the jaw joint itself. That's why it's often called the "masquerader."

Thanks to a significant grant from the Junior League of Long Island, Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School has a shiny new playground for the students to enjoy. The JLLI is an organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women, and improving communities through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Its purpose is exclusively educational and charitable. JLLI President Tyran Sullivan and co-chairs Jennifer Copobianco and Kelly Morgano led a team

of 30 volunteers, which included friends of JLLI such as PAMES Principal Scott Bullis, Assistant Principal Rose Hutcherson and a few others affiliated with the school, who sacrificed a Saturday to install the playground – all in just one day! Ms. Copobianco and Morgano stopped by a recent Board of Education meeting to inform the community of the new playground, where they were met with accolades and applause. “Thank you for making our dream a reality,” Acting Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary T. Kelly said to Ms. Copobianco

and Morgano. Dr. Kelly was on hand at PAMES when many wide-eyed youngsters made their way to the new playground for the first time. The JLLI donates one playground every two years to a community that expresses interest and need. The PAMES playground, for which the organization donated more than $30,000, is the largest they built to date. The organization primarily raises funds through its Roslyn-based thrift shop. Last school year, Copiague Middle School reading teacher Diane Chimienti created a buddy reading program that allowed sixth- and eighthgraders to read together in an effort to increase reading for enjoyment. She expanded the program this year by creating the Partners in Literacy program that teams eighth-grade volunteer mentors with select sixth-graders to add an instructional component. “For students who may

be struggling with their reading, we need to make it fun for them,” said Mrs. Chimienti. “To become more successful, they need to find enjoyment in reading.” During their normal study hall period, students gather in the library to read aloud together and complete activities, such as graphic organizers and other writing exercises. “I introduce the books and ask the partners to look for certain key elements in the text, but this program

is really run completely by the students,” explained Mrs. Chimienti. “It is truly amazing the relationships that have blossomed.” Eighth-grade mentor Miguel Mercado said, “It makes me feel good that I can help them enunciate words, and knowing that I can help them learn and get better at reading.” In addition to working in pairs, the students occasionally work as a group to read plays aloud or work independently on their reading stamina.

Signing On Amityvlle Memorial High School senior Eduardo Ramirez Jr., who starred on the Warrior varsity wrestling squad, will attend Long Island University Post this fall and wrestle for the LIU Pioneers after receiving

scholarship monies from the school. “Eduardo is a dedicated student-athlete who is always striving to challenge himself, both in and out of the classroom,” said head coach Greg McCoy, who noted that Eduardo

is training to advance to a higher weight class. This season he finished 2nd overall in Suffolk County for his weight class of 138, with a record of 39-5. Eduardo recently placed 4th in a national tournament.

Miles Middle School National Junior Honor Society inducted 17 new members into the organization, lighting the way for a new group of high character leaders and academic achievers to make their mark on the Amityville community and help others along the way. Current NJHS officers Eddie Marrerro Jr., Sabrina Tobin, Kimberly Bonilla and Giselle Monge expounded on the virtues of the society’s five pillars of scholarship, leadership, citizenship, service and character, before lighting candles representing each quality. Amityvlle Memorial High School senior Travis Dickerson, who starred on the Warrior varsity boys basketball team, will attend Nyack College this fall on a full scholarship. Ironically, Nyack’s team is also called the Warriors. “Travis is in a very unique class,” said AMHS Warrior head basketball coach Jack Agostino regarding the 6-4 senior who was named to Newsday’s All-Long Island 1st team and achieved All-

County status this season. Travis was also named Most Valuable Player of the 2014 Suffolk County playoffs and averaged 18 points, six rebounds and four steals per game. For the regular season, he averaged 20 points, four rebounds and four-and-half assists per game. His mother Carolyn Dickerson and his Aunt Rose stood by his side along with Coach Agostino, Acting Superintendent

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.

The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad

cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the

risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to

be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important

for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
