As a culmination to their reading and writing unit, kindergarten students at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District celebrated the lifelong unity of the letters Q and U in a special wedding ceremony on May 25th. Throughout the school year, the students learned about the sounds that letters make together and that letters, such as Q and U, appear together in most words. To help the kindergartners remember this helpful tip, they attended as guests to the wedding of Q and U. Dressed for the special occasion, girls arrived wearing dresses, while the boys wore suits. For the ceremony, each student colorfully decorated a Q and U headband and had popsicle sticks with paper cutouts of a dress and suit labeled with the letters Q and U. The large Q and U cutout letters, held by two students, walked down the isle as ceremonial wedding

Angels Revisited By: Jamie Lynn Ryan And now, a selection from the archives, published June 2008... This past Memorial Day weekend, the Navy’s Blue Angels returned to the Island for their annual turn as one of the Jones Beach Air Show’s featured attractions. Even though it’s just a short drive down Ocean Parkway, my family and I have never managed to get out there to witness the spectacle up close and in person. Too much traffic, too many people, too much of a hassle… This year, though, I realized that the planes would be practicing right around the corner at Republic Airport during the week leading up to the show. And so, on Friday afternoon, a friend and I made a point of taking a ride down to the Airport Plaza shopping center to see if we could catch a glimpse. A glimpse? Try witnessing all six of the planes whizzing overhead and whoknows-what speed, close enough so that we could read the numbers on them! What a sight!

If only I had my camera, I thought. Well, after that close call, I decided to make it my mission to get a shot of them flying to or from the air show over the weekend, since I knew they would cross over my house on their flight down to the beach. Saturday afternoon, as I heard them approach, I ran out with my camera – only to catch the cloud of dust they had left in their wake. Okay, I thought, I’ll just wait here on the deck – listening to the simulcast on the radio – until I hear them wrapping up their routine. Then, all I have to do is aim my camera for the sky and I can’t miss them! Easier said than done. I saw them coming, all right. The problem was it’s a little hard to frame something moving at hundreds of miles an hour in your camera lens before it’s passed you by. I managed to snap one shot as they approached, which, after the camera’s natural delay, resulted in a rather fuzzy shot of the planes whizzing right out of the frame. There’s always tomorrow, I thought. The next morning, I drove

down to the local town beach and waited, poised for the approach. Sure enough, I saw the HC-130 slowly making its way south, a sure sign that the six Blue Angels were not far behind. And then… out of the clouds they came – all six, flying in perfect formation. And again, I was only able to get just one shot before I lost track of the formation. I followed their flight into the distance, where I was actually able to view most of the theatrics which followed, albeit from a great distance. I imagine it was much better up close, but hey – not a bad seat on my beach either! I must have stood there for a solid 30 minutes, watching the back and forth, up and down, looping motion of the jets, until at last, they began their return trip to Republic. This time, I got it. One...two… three shots as they came closer and closer – still a little blurred, but sharp against the clear blue sky. Finally! As they flew off into the distance, I heard one bystander mumble, “There they go – our tax dollars at work.” But she was smiling.

On a recent Saturday morning in May, about twenty students from Amityville Memorial H.S. volunteered to work with members of the Bay Village Civic Association. They had a two-fold mission: to clean up the Woods Preserve on Ketcham Creek, as well as improve the landscaping appearance on the H.S. grounds. With the assistance of school advisor Cara Garofalo, and the support of Assemblywoman JeanPierre, Stop & Shop, and Raimo’s Pizza, the BVCA conducted a successful event.

The students and volunteers worked diligently to remove plastic bags and debris from the wetlands, while not disturbing it. At least four bags of trash were collected. Afterwards, everyone returned to the school to weed and prune garden beds at the main entrance. Many plants had been purchased by the civic association. Laboring together, the students and BVCA volunteers added the new plants to those beds. Plants were added around the electronic sign facing Merrick Rd., as well as the one at the sign in the

western parking lot, too. Tired and hungry, but pleased with the results, students and civic association volunteers enjoyed Raimo’s pizza and refreshments in the High School lunchroom. Community Service hours were awarded to the students, as well. This has become an annual event to help beautify the Village of Amityville. The Bay Village Civic Association has donated and created several garden beds in the Village including the large rectangular bed at the entrance to the Library.

A tradition for almost 70 years, the Narrasketuck Yacht Club in Amityville will once again be offering junior sailing lessons this summer for kids from ages 9-17. Applications are now being accepted. Lessons run for two four-week sessions from Monday through Thursday of each week. Beginner lessons are offered in the morning; intermediate and advanced classes are offered in the afternoon. The first session begins on Monday, June 27th; the second session begins on Monday, July 25th. Yacht club membership is not required to participate. Students work with our certified instructors to learn sailing and sailboat racing skills in our fleet of training boats. In addition to instilling a love of the outdoors and introducing youngsters to a lifelong sport, sailing is fun, builds confidence, and teaches teamwork and leadership. Intermediate and advanced students participate in regattas that are held on Fridays at other yacht clubs along the Great South Bay. Sailors can choose to try and qualify for local, regional, and national US Sailing events. Many of our students have gone on to win financial and college scholarships for sailing. Students must wear a personal floatation device (PFD) at all times and pass a basic swimming test on the first day. They should be comfortable in and around the water. Established in 1933, the Narrasketuck Yacht Club is also open for membership. NOTICE OF APPLICATION AVAILABILITY AND INTAKE As part of an ongoing commitment to help make the "American Dream" of home ownership a reality for first time homebuyers who wish to reside in Town of Babylon, Supervisor, Rich Schaffer announced that the Long Island Housing Partnership (LIHP), as agent for Town of Babylon, will be making applications available for first time homebuyers for down payment/ closing cost assistance towards the purchase of a principal residence. The Town of Babylon will provide eligible first time homebuyers with up to $14,000 towards down payment/closing costs towards the purchase of an eligible new or existing singlefamily home, provided that the applicant puts a minimum down payment of at least $3,000. The applicant must also be able to satisfy the mortgage lender’s minimum down payment requirements and be able to secure a mortgage. Homeowners are required to reside in the home for a minimum of 5 years or HUD will require a full repayment of the grant.

Eligibility Criteria: An Applicant MUST be a: I.

First Time Homeowner - defined as a household that has not owned a home during the three year period immediately prior to the date of application for down payment assistance. Household occupying the property as a Principal Residence.

Income Eligible Household - meaning a household must have a gross annual income not exceeding the income limits for the area as listed below with overtime and assets also taken into consideration.

IV.

Household must attend a mortgage counseling session at LIHP and must be able to secure a mortgage.

Household must have adequate resources and credit to qualify for a mortgage.

Property Value Limit: The limit on the maximum purchase price of a single-family unit is $356,000. The property being purchased must appraise at the purchase price or higher. If the property appraises lower than the purchase price, down payment funds will not be available to purchase the home. FISHING TRIP - On Wednesday, May 25th, the Kiwanis Club of Amityville organized their annual Marine Biology/Fishing Trip. This year, 63 Amityville Memorial High School students, seven Kiwanians, along with five teachers, boarded the Yankee III at Captree for a fun filled day of fishing and a very informative marine biology lesson. Flag Day is June 14th. A time to display and honor our Flag. With this in mind, I thought I would provide you with information about the use of the United States Flag during a funeral service. The following regulation is taken from the National Flag Foundation, the authoritative body for honoring, caring and displaying the American Flag: “The ceremony of draping the casket with a United States Flag is used to honor veterans, “patriotic citizens”. Upon further investigation I have learned that this has come to mean every citizen of the United States has the right to have his or her casket draped with the United States Flag. Thus firemen, policemen and everyday citizens who were not veterans may opt to have their casket flag draped. However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet. For veterans who have been honorably discharged from the military, the flag is provided by the Veterans Administration and secured by the funeral director. However, the family must be able to provide a copy of the veteran’s discharge papers for proof of service. This being done, and whenever possible, a military honor guard will be present at the committal service of the veteran to present the flag to the next of kin of the deceased. The rules for use of the flag during the wake and funeral service are as follows: 1. If the casket is closed, the entire casket maybe draped with the flag. 2. If the casket is half open, the foot end of the casket maybe draped with a properly folded flag. 3. If the family does not wish the casket to be draped with the flag, it must be properly folded and placed in the panel of the open casket. 4. The blue and stars are always to be placed over the head and left shoulder of the deceased when the casket is closed and a similar position when the casket is half open, and only the stars are to show when flag is properly folded and placed in the panel of an open casket. 5. Nothing is to set on top of the flag. Finally, if a flag is to be displayed during the funeral on a pole, it is always to be placed at the left of the casket. Hatching Chicks First-grade students in Terri Alzmann’s class at Deauville Gardens West Elementary School in the Copiague School District learned about the life cycle of a chicken by observing the progression of an egg hatching into a chick. During the study unit,

the students discussed the elements that make up a chicken egg such as the shell, albumen, chalazae and membrane. The eggs were kept in an incubator in the classroom. As a class, they kept a 21-day countdown until the nine chicks hatched. During that time, they observed

the eggs and wrote in their “My Chick Journal,” taking notes and logging any changes in the eggs’ appearances. Once the chicks arrived, the children had the opportunity to hold and hand-feed them.
