On Friday, July 21st, for the 10th consecutive year, thousands will ride through the streets of Babylon alongside proud veterans to support wounded service members. Last year, the event raised over $60,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project and United Veterans Beacon House, with over 1,000 riders participating alongside more than 50 wounded service members. Since the first Soldier Ride in 2008, over $750,000 has been collected for injured service members. The Town of Babylon is proud to announce that 50% of the funds raised at this year’s Soldier Ride will go directly to Suffolk County United Veterans (SCUV), a project of the Association for Mental Health and Wellness.

At this year’s Town of Babylon Earth Day Celebration, Deputy Supervisor Tony Martinez unveiled the first annual Town of Babylon Environmental Stewardship Award, a yearly award that recognizes the work of a local environmental group. The inaugural award was presented to Todd Brice, President and Co-Founder of the Great South Bay

Society, for 10 years of dedicated service keeping our local environment clean and beautiful. Brice was joined by co-founders David Hager and Michael Babich to accept the award. Since 2007, the Great South Bay Society has hosted an annual cleanup of the Great South Bay in Amityville. Over the years, they have removed over 120,000 pounds of debris from the water and

Teachers at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School have not only embraced the Amityville Union Free School District’s new initiatives in literacy instruction and technology, but are using the programs together to provide students with engaging learning experiences. Fifth-grade teachers Amy Stein and Paul Grasso are using Google Classroom and Chromebooks to support Reader’s and Writer’s Workshop through Columbia University Teachers College. The literacy program, implemented in the elementary schools and middle school, offers a more personalized approached to reading and writing instruction. Ms. Stein and Mr. Grasso recently taught a unit on immigration, which is part of the United States history-focused fifth-grade social studies curriculum. The teachers used Google Classroom to share videos and documents about Ellis Island, Angel Island and Mexican immigration with students, who were able to view these using the class set

of Chromebooks. Through Writer’s Workshop, students completed several writing assignments using evidence from these materials to support their arguments or by interviewing someone they knew who emigrated to the United States. With Google Documents, the teachers could give instant feedback by “live editing” an assignment while a student is working on it. With Google Documents available for longer writing assignments, Ms. Stein and Mr. Grasso use Padlet for quick responses and class discussion. They pose a question and students type their responses on the computer, which then appear on the SmartBoard for all to see. Ms. Stein said this has the children putting more thought into their answers because “no one wants to have the shortest response.” “The students are all very engaged,” Ms. Stein added. “We are immersing them in all different kinds of materials and it has really pushed their thinking further.”

Flag Day is June 14th. A time to display and honor our Flag. With this in mind, I thought I would provide you with information about the use of the United States Flag during a funeral service. The following regulation is taken from the National Flag Foundation, the authoritative body for honoring, caring and displaying the American Flag: “The ceremony of draping the casket with a United States Flag is used to honor veterans, “patriotic citizen”. Upon further investigation I have learned that this has come to mean every citizen of the United States has the right to have his or her casket draped with the United States Flag. Thus firemen, policemen and everyday citizens who were not veterans may opt to have their casket flag draped. However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet.

1. If the casket is closed the entire casket may be draped with the flag. 2. If the casket is half open, the foot end of the casket may be draped with a properly folded flag. 3. If the family does not wish the casket to be draped with the flag, it must be properly folded and placed in the panel of the open casket. 4. The blue and stars are always to be placed over the head and left shoulder of the deceased when the casket is closed and a similar position when the casket is half open and only the stars are to show when the flag is properly folded and placed in the panel of an open casket. 5. Nothing is to set on top of the flag. Finally, if a flag is to be displayed during the funeral on a pole, it is always to be placed at the left of the casket. National Junior Honor Society Sixteen students were recognized for their academic achievements and good character when they were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District. The afternoon ceremony on May 15th featured a candlelighting ceremony to mark the five traits required for membership: scholarship, leadership, service, character and citizenship. of Schools Dr. Mary T. Kelly, Principal Edward Plaia and Assistant Principal Kristy Pagliari, who told the inductees to continue to embrace those values. Honor society members, under the direction of adviser Carlee Wallenstein, perform several community service activities a year.
