Three students of the graduating class at St. John the Baptist Diocesan High School have each been awarded Teufel Family Foundation Scholarships. The Teufel Family Foundation Scholarship selections are made by the trustees of the foundation, Richard Teufel and Victoria Brown, and are presented to graduates who completed the application process and have demonstrated excellence in the area of community service or significant achievement in performing, graphic or fine arts. Triz Ann Dearoz of Holtsville, is a member of the St. John’s National Honor Society

and was awarded the scholarship for her artistic achievements. The two students who received a scholarship based on their dedicated service to school and community programs were Breanna Clinton of Amityville and Allegra Brown of Central Islip. Both of these students are also members of the National Honor Society. The Shootout for Soldiers, a 24-hour lacrosse game benefiting wounded American military members that has raised more than $250,000 since its inception, will expand to a second location in Long Island on July 24th and 25th. The event, which was originally started by a group of high school students, will hold its third annual fundraising game in the Baltimore area this June. The effort has expanded dramatically each year, with more than 2,000 participants and 10,500 attendees taking part in the 2013 charitable event. The expansion to Long Island, according to organizers, represents the first expansion leg in a program anticipated to spread throughout the country. Fixing The System By: Jamie Lynn Ryan There is a video making its rounds on the social media circuit, showcasing what can only be described as the sorry state of our education system. One after another, various beachgoers were interviewed on the shores of our very own Jones Beach over this past Memorial Day weekend, asked questions ranging from “Who did we fight in the Revolutionary War?” to “What side of the Civil War was Abraham Lincoln associated with?” to “What country attacked us at Pearl Harbor?” The answers? Some of the best gems were “France” (our opponents in the War for Independence), “The South” (50/50 shot, people) and every nation from “China” to “Russia” to “Korea” to, you

guessed it, “France.” So much for the “date which will live in infamy,” right? And all this was to determine who, if anyone, could explain why we began commemorating Memorial Day in the first place. Judging by the aforementioned answers, not too many history buffs among us. The best part was that most, if not all, of the interviewees were clearly high school or college age, leading to the question: what exactly are they learning in school these days? Sure, I can’t tell you the details of every historical event which occurred over the course of the last several centuries, but the basics? Those are pretty hard to forget. And when I was actually in school, studying for exams every other week and writing term papers on such topics? It would have been difficult not to retain at least something, anything.

It’s a sad state of affairs when you are blissfully ignorant of your own nation’s battle for independence and how you came to enjoy such freedoms as frolicking on the beach on a “holiday” weekend, having no clue how such occasion came into fruition. Sure it’s funny and entertaining to watch as you’re scrolling through the Facebook newsfeed; but when you take a step back and realize that these are the people with whom you coexist on a daily basis, some from your own generation, it becomes pretty disconcerting. I wonder how many of these individuals grabbed their smartphones and Googled the answers following their failed interviews. For those keeping score at home: 1.) Britain, 2.) North and 3.) Japan. They may want to grab a history book and fill in the rest.

For A Day Essay Contest. Students in grades five to 12 were tasked with learning about Saturn, its rings and its largest moon, and then writing a 500word essay defending their choice as to which of the three targets they think NASA should send the Cassini spacecraft. In her essay, Belen chose to point Cassini’s cameras directly toward Saturn. “We should observe Saturn because it has many unique features,” wrote Belen. “Two of the many

interesting aspects of Saturn are the hurricane right at its north pole and the hexagon-shaped feature. Saturn is one of the most interesting planets in the solar system, and its features are even more compelling.” With her win, Belen will receive a certificate, her essay will be posted on NASA’s Cassini website and she and her classmates will participate in a videoconference questionand-answer session with Cassini scientists.

Flag Day is June 14th. A time to display and honor our Flag. With this in mind, I thought I would provide you with information about the use of the United States Flag during a funeral service. The following regulation is taken from the National Flag Foundation, the authoritative body for honoring, caring and displaying the American Flag: “The ceremony of draping the casket with a United States Flag is used to honor veterans, “patriotic citizen”. Upon further investigation I have learned that this has come to mean every citizen of the United States has the right to have his or her casket draped with the United States Flag. Thus fireman, policeman and everyday citizens who were not veterans may opt to have their casket flag draped. However, the family of the deceased who were not veterans must provide the flag and it must measure 9.5 feet by 5 feet. For veterans who have been honorable discharged from the military the flag is provided by the Veterans Administration and secured by the funeral director. However, the family must be able to provide a copy of the veterans discharge papers for proof of service. This being done and whenever possible, a military honor guard will be present at the committal service of the veteran to present the flag to the next of kin of the deceased. The rules for use of the flag during the wake and funeral service are as follows: 1. If the casket is closed the entire casket maybe draped with the flag. 2. If the casket is half open, the foot end of the casket maybe draped with a properly folded flag. 3. If the family does not wish the casket to be draped with the flag, it must be properly folded and placed in the panel of the open casket. 4. The blue and stars are always to be placed over the head and left shoulder of the deceased when the casket is closed and a similar position when the casket is half open and only the stars are to show when the flag is properly folded and placed in the panel of an open casket. 5. Nothing is to set on top of the flag. Finally, if a flag is to be displayed during the funeral on a pole it is always to be placed at the left of the casket.
