Rebecca from Mineola is motivating the local community to find cures by participating in the Crohn’s & Colitis Long Island’s Take Steps walk. This year’s walk takes place on Sunday, June 12th, at 1 p.m. at Marjorie Post Park. Rebecca is living with Crohn’s diseases which combined with ulcerative colitis, are painful, debilitating digestive diseases affecting more

than 1.6 million American adults and children, including an estimated 80,000 patients under the age of 18. In 2011, as a senior in high school Rebecca started to develop severe abdominal pain in her lower right side. After her first colonoscopy, Rebecca woke up to, “You have Crohn’s Disease... there are support groups for what you’re going through.” What she thought would be a quick fix turned into a life changing diagnosis. Within two months of diagnosis, Rebecca dropped down to about 90 pounds; hair was thinning, on TPN, could not eat solid food, and was scheduled for surgery. “CCFA has been an incredible organization from the beginning of my IBD journey,” says Rebecca. “I attend yearly talks about uprising medications and technology in the IBD world and am connected through campus connects. Since I was diagnosed, my family and friends have supported me in raising funds and have walked proudly with me at the Take Steps walk. I am proud to be the honoree this year for the CCFA and have aspirations to spread awareness and fundraise greater than any other year. I hope the money raised towards research will someday help find a cure for myself and all

The Saga of Squeegee By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Beautiful turquoise betta seeking small, non-disruptive companion to cohabitate within fully equipped tank. Must be able to vacuum gravel and plant surfaces; windows a plus. So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

Crayons of Care As part of a community service project, fourthgrade students in Patti Dieck’s class at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District collected and donated crayons to The Crayon Initiative, an organization that gathers unwanted crayons and recycles them

into new ones. To begin the process, students wrote more than 100 letters to local businesses and teachers in the district asking them for their unwanted crayons. To encourage their school community to get involved, the children made posters that were hung in the hallways

around the building. In collaboration, the students sorted the crayons by color and sent them to The Crayon Initiative. With their contributions, the recycled crayons will be remanufactured into new ones that are donated to schools and hospitals for children to use.

Mock Interview Day The Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School Industry Advisory Board recently held its first Mock Interview Day. During the event, students participated in mock interviews with local business employees,

elected officials, board of education members and school administrators. At the end of the program, the interviewers provided valuable feedback to the students and answered any questions about the interview process.

“It was a great opportunity for our students to practice their interviewing skills,” said Linda Aims, business education teacher. “This is one more step toward making all our students workforce ready.”

Sew for Service Members of the Home and Careers Club at Copiague Middle School, under the advisement of Christine Barteldt, won the grand prize in the Long Island Family and Consumer Sciences Challenge for their entry in the “Sew for Service” contest. In early December, students began the process of hand sewing blankets during their club meetings. After months of hard work, they created and donated a dozen blankets to Mike’s Tykes, an organization that

distributed the blankets to animal rescue shelters. For the LIFACS Challenge, the students completed an application and submitted photographs of their finished blankets as well as the thank you letter they received from the Mike’s Tykes organization. As the grand prize winner, the club earned a $100 cash prize which they put towards a pizza party and donated the remaining funds to the Copiague Middle School Builders Club, a community service-

Copiague Groundbreaking The groundbreaking ceremony for Copiague Commons, a 90 Unit apartment project, took place on May 5th, at the site located at 54 Railroad Avenue across from the Long Island Railroad. Developers, elected officials, business owners, residents and bankers gathered to mark the start of construction of this 33.5 million dollar project. Sharon Fattoruso,

President of the Copiague Chamber of Commerce, and longtime resident spoke to those who came out for the ceremony. “Young people drawn by affordable housing could in turn bring businesses, restaurants, and maybe a coffee shop. This is a great day for Copiague,” she said. Sharon has played an active role in the revitalization of Copiague from the inception of the

Copiague Vision Plan that was established back in 2009. She hopes that this will be the beginning of great things to come to downtown Copiague.

With friends, family and members of the board of education in attendance, Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary Kelly, Middle School Principal Edward Plaia, Assistant Principal Kristy Pagliari, Dean of Students Earl Mitchell and NJHS adviser Carlee Wallenstein were on hand to congratulate the students on this special achievement.

The Suffolk Zone of the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance sponsored the annual Physical Education Student Leadership Awards Ceremony at Longwood High School on May 4th. Students who qualify for the award are recognized for their achievements in physical education,
