First Class Treatment Petty Officer First Class Joshua Candon made his third visit to Northeast Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District as he visited pre-K and kindergarten classrooms on May 17th. The Naval officer last came to the school in September 2016, when he presented a folded American flag that

had been flown during several Joint Task Force missions. Mr. Candon recently returned from a deployment in Africa, and during that time Northeast students sent his unit personalized cards for Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Easter, as well as candy, Girl Scout cookies and other goodies. During his recent

visit, Mr. Candon showed students an African war club and answered questions about his role in the military. He also thanked the students for their kind words and generosity during his recent deployment. I recently listened in on a rather interesting Press Club of Long Island panel discussion, highlighting the process which went into investigating a cold case that had gone unsolved for over 50 years on the east end of Long Island. The teamwork between reporters and the police department eventually resulted in the case being “cracked,” so to speak, and the unsolved murder put to rest. I bring this up not because of my fascination with true crime stories; but rather, it brought to light the importance of a component often missing in many lines of work, in life as a whole … that of collaboration. Often, the focus is on independence, on doing things one’s own way, with little room for input from others. Cooperation is key – this a concept taught to us from the first day of kindergarten on up, earlier even, as we begin to learn the process of sharing our resources (even if those happen to be building blocks or Barbie dolls). I don’t often have the

opportunity to cover events; but recently, I was privileged to take my journalistic tools into the field and exercise some of those reporting and photography skills honed in the lecture halls of college, even as far back as the grade school classroom. As I stood on the tarmac at Republic Airport last week, borrowed camera in hand, anxiously awaiting the arrival of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels, I scanned the crowd assembled. Veteran reporters mixed with fresh-faced interns, all waiting for a glimpse of the majestic planes. Some carried smart phones; others set up elaborate tripods and fiddled with expensive lenses, all determined to capture that “perfect” shot upon landing. Suddenly, there was a roar overhead. All attention was instantly focused on the sky, as cameras zoomed, record buttons were pushed and people jostled for a better angle. And then, just like that, they were gone, gliding to a landing on a distant runway before slowly taxiing toward us, where they would

eventually park for follow-up pilot interviews. All around, you heard the murmurings of Did you get the shot? and I thought they would be approaching from the other way… Can we get a do-over? And in that mix of elation and disappointment as many realized they had not, in fact, captured much of anything in their respective frames, there emerged that collaboration I speak of – that natural instinct to cooperate for a common goal. Phone numbers were exchanged, business cards swapped and contacts were instantly made, with promises to share footage and photos. After all, we were here for the same reason. No benefit to withholding information that, ultimately, we all desired to share with the masses. We may not have cracked a case that morning, but we demonstrated on a much smaller scale the beauty of cooperation, of teamwork. The stunning fighter jets aside, that may have been the most beautiful sight of all.

Earning First Place A team of student scientists from the Amityville Union Free School District took first place in the project competition at the recent STEM Diversity Summit at Farmingdale State College. The group of Amityville Memorial High School students, including Jeffrey

Garcia, Nathalie Larin, Amber Palmer, Amelia Tisk, Alexa Victor and Z’Dhanne Williams, are part of the Independent Science Research program. They presented their project, “Treatment of Polycythemia Vera with Resveratrol and Other Small Molecules,” which

they have been working on since middle school. The students have been trying to determine molecules that would be best for the treatment of Polycythemia Vera, a rare blood cancer. They have been working one day a week at Farmingdale alongside biology professor

CHIMNEY SWEEP

Amityville Memorial High School’s girls lacrosse team recently finished its inaugural season, as the popular sport was added for the spring 2018 schedule. The junior varsity team was coached by a pair of Amityville teachers with experience playing at the collegiate level. Northwest Elementary School thirdgrade teacher Nicole Bass was part of three NCAA championship teams at Adelphi University and high school social studies teacher Margot Howard was an inaugural member of St. Joseph College’s women’s lacrosse team. The Warriors played a 13-game schedule from late March through early May against Suffolk County opponents from Lindenhurst to Hampton Bays. Homes games were held at Lou Howard Field.

Coach Howard said the team was more competitive as the season went on, and successfully increased their goal-scoring ability. It also continued to gain players as word spread about the new team, finishing with about 20 players. Senior captains Gaby Alberto, Kimberly Bonilla and Allison Martinez led the group of mostly freshman, sophomores and juniors. Next year’s team will have many returning players with a full year of playing experience. “It’s a young team and we have a lot of potential,” she said. “The girls were so amazing and so dedicated. I’m just really excited about the future of this program.” Coach Howard said she was extremely proud of her players, who added lacrosse to their rigorous

academic schedules. They committed themselves to learning the rules and strategies, and played well together as a team. Evan Farkas, the district’s director of athletics, physical education and health, said the hope is to expand the girls program to include a varsity team in the near future. Amityville will introduce intramural boys lacrosse next year to eventually grow into a full program. “We’re incredibly proud of the girls and the coaches,” Mr. Farkas said. “It’s a challenge to start up a new team. I think this is going to be one of our great programs in Amityville. Watching a game, it felt like lacrosse was always here.”

Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Death Notices Wilbur Sterling, a longtime resident of Amityville, died May 14th, 2018 at his home. He was 97 years old. Mr. Sterling was born on October 9th, 1920 in Brooklyn, New York to Alfred A. and Anna (Salverson) Sterling. He was a proud Naval Veteran serving during World War II, in the Asiatic-Pacific area, from 1942 to 1945. Wilbur was the former Suffolk County Deputy Chief Fire Marshall for 20 years. He was an active member of the

Amityville fire department where he served as chief from 1965 to 1967. Mr. Sterling was predeceased by two wives, Kathryn and Shirley L. Sterling as well as his son Wayne. Survivors include his daughter Janet Fine (Andrew), his granddaughter Kaydie and a close family friend, Regina Coons. The Amityville Masonic Lodge, the Wantagh American Legion and the Amityville Fire Department conducted services at the funeral home

on Wednesday, May 16th. The Reverend Martin Nale, pastor of Christ Lutheran Church in Wantagh conducted the funeral service at the funeral home on Thursday, May 17th. Cremation was private. Inurnment of cremated remains will be in LI National Cemetery on Tuesday, May 22nd, with Military Honors. Arrangements were under the direction of Powell Funeral Home, Inc., Amityville, New York.

Science Symposium The fourth annual Science Research Symposium at Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School on May 17th celebrated the outstanding accomplishments of the high school’s science students. Joined by district administrators, board of education members, representatives from the Town of Babylon, members of the science department and invited guests, the students in the independent science research program, the advanced science research program and the introduction to science research program showed off their award-winning works. “These powerhouses have worked tirelessly –

after school, before school and on weekends – to present their best work,” said science teacher Tracy Wenzler. “The teachers and the mentors have lent their time – their most valuable resource – to these students and they have worked tirelessly to present their hard work. They are helping to bring our science program to new heights each year.” Fourteen Copiague science research students presented a brief overview of eight different projects, many of which have garnered notable awards throughout the school year. Projects were on display for a poster presentation walk following the ceremony, giving attendees an opportunity to speak

with the students firsthand about their research. Zachary Wilson, a Copiague alumnus and one of the first students to participate in the science research, was the keynote speaker. He presented his senior thesis to the audience. Each student in the program was presented a certificate by science Chairperson Renee Locker in recognition of his or her accomplishments this school year. “I am very humbled at the success and dedication of our students,” Locker said. “I am very happy with all of the new partnerships we have made and the fact that we are producing some of the top STEM students here in Copiague.”

Commiting to College Copiague School District’s student-athletes who will be continuing their sport at the collegiate level were recognized during a ceremony hosted by Copiague School District’s athletic department, coaches and Copiague School District athletic director Pete Cesare on May 15th. Mentors Recognized Fifth-grade student council members at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School in the Copiague School District shared their appreciation for the special mentors at their school during an Honor a Teacher celebration on

May 21st. The fifth-graders chose a person who has inspired them during their time at Susan E. Wiley. Joining the teachers were administrators, assistants, aides and cafeteria workers. The students presented

them with a plaque, and wrote about why they have been inspirational to them. They connected one on one with their mentors and asked them questions about what inspired them.

After learning about erosion, rocks, plate tectonics, volcanoes and earthquakes, and the water cycle, sixth-graders at Park Avenue Memorial Elementary School in the Amityville Union Free School District shared their knowledge with their younger peers. The school hosted its annual Science Project Fair on May 17th, and

sixth-graders set up their displays in the auditorium. Fourth- and fifth-graders visited the fair to learn about the different scientific concepts. Students worked in teams and one group per class was assigned to each of the five topics that comprised the sixth-grade science curriculum. The teams had to create poster board presentations.

Teacher Deborah Ross said that in addition to mastering the content, the students had to put great thought into their projects and create wellorganized poster boards. She explained that presentation skills will become increasingly more important as they get older and even could be necessary when interviewing for jobs.

Students at Great Neck Road Elementary School in the Copiague School District had a special visit from members of the Drama Club from Walter G. O’Connell Copiague High School on May 18th. During two performances, the high

school students improvised different scenes for the younger students based on social issues they may encounter. The students played out scenes that involve bullying, being left out, anxiety about moving to a new school and how to deal with different/
