“Hope,” a multi-panelled artwork created by three classes of visual art students at Usdan Center for the Creative and Performing Arts, was awarded a First Prize in the 2014 student art competition at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove, Long Island. The work was designed and built during the summer of 2013 at the renowned

summer arts day camp, which is also an agency of the UJA-Federation of New York. It was conceived as a visual metaphor for the chronology of events that precipitated the Holocaust and its aftermath. The Usdan winning prize, in the Multi-Media/Still category, was awarded at the Center on Sunday May 18th. The project was conceived by Usdan

Art Department Chair Rochelle Morgan, who is a child of Holocaust survivors. It began with a visit to Usdan in August by Ms Morgan’s mother and aunt, Lucy Gutman and Rita Kurz, who spoke and were interviewed by the student artists about their experiences in concentration camps. The students wanted to know how people survive

horrific life events but still maintain dignity, integrity and compassion; and the artistic task for the students was to find the proper medium and method to best respond to this question. They also wanted their artwork to pay tribute to two women who, in the face of extraordinary abominations, managed not only to salvage their existence but to

subsequently live full and productive lives in New York. The result is a large lucite “box” of approximately six feet in length, painted on both sides by students who have depicted scenes that bring the sisters’ story to life. Each spring, the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center offers competitions for students centered on a theme of

social justice, tolerance, and respect for diversity. The competitions offer students the opportunity to showcase their creative talents. Winning entries are exhibited at the Center and photographed for inclusion in its Competition Journal. The mission of the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center

By: Jamie Lynn Ryan With the recent passing of Memorial Day, I thought it appropriate to resurrect an old column from 2006, as the sentiment remains the same no matter the year… I am willing to bet that there are many children who were probably raised to think the sole purpose of Memorial Day is strictly to roll out the barbecues, open the pool for the season, head to the beach for the ﬁrst time and check out all those great sales. Pretty sad, when you think about it. Such a holiday is surely not a “happy” occasion in the traditional sense; although,

for most people, all that matters is that it qualiﬁes as a paid day off. And there we are, off and running, blissfully unaware and increasingly unpatriotic as a result. When did this sense of apathy set it? Is it just a manifestation of the more recent generations, or is it representative of our country as a whole? Now, I’m certain there are many to whom this sentiment does not apply. Any veterans, or the family and friends of those who have served, are generally quite appreciative of such a day’s signiﬁcance. I, for one, admit that I had never attended any kind of Memorial Day commemoration prior to this year when my family

decided to take a ride out to Calverton for the cemetery’s annual services. Sure, it was solemn, but you know what? So is the fact that hundreds of thousands of people have lost their lives over the course of the last several centuries in wars at home and abroad. Is it really asking too much to observe a day – a portion of a day, even – to appreciate that sacrifice? So, the next time some overly-commercialized holiday comes along, take a moment to reflect upon the reason why it was made a national holiday in the first place. I doubt it was to give people another excuse to have a barbecue.

St. Joseph’s College (SJC) will hold its 24th Annual Golf Classic on Monday, June 9th, at the Plandome Country Club in Plandome. The 2014 honoree is Don Lizak, former athletic director of SJC’s Long Island Campus. All proceeds from this event will support the College’s athletic programs. Since 1994, Don Lizak worked to transform SJC athletics into the highly regarded athletic program that it is today. After becoming an NCAA Division III institution in 1997, SJC won the Skyline Conference Presidents Cup four times and grew from eight varsity sports to 19. During his tenure at the College, Lizak oversaw the opening of the John A. Danzi Athletic Center in 1997 and the 24.8-acre Outdoor Field Complex in 2012. He spent 38 years in athletic administration and coaching with stints at Long Island University,

In celebration of Mother’s Day on May 11th, students throughout the Copiague School District participated in activities that honored mothers and other important female figures. In Danielle Rizzo’s first-grade class at Deauville Gardens Elementary School, students created cards and presents to give to the special female in their lives. Using scratch paper and a wooden stick, students made drawings that were

inserted into mugs to be given as presents along with handmade cards. At Great Neck Road Elementary School, kindergartners hosted the annual Mother’s Day Celebration. The students treated their mothers to a concert, singing songs all about mothers, Mother’s Day, and all the special things mothers do for their children. Following the concert, the moms watched a musical slideshow, prepared by the

kindergarten teachers, showcasing the students’ activities throughout the year before enjoying a quick snack with their children. Second-graders in Diana Daniels’ class at Susan E. Wiley Elementary School invited moms and other special females to class for a Mother’s Day Tea. During the event, the students read stories they had written on what makes their mother special and presented each attendee with a plant.

The Amityville School District recently paid tribute to the late Superintendent of Schools Dr. John Williams with a special ceremony that left a living memorial for all to remember him in every school. With the help of volunteers and support from the district groundskeepers and maintenance staff, a tree and flowers were planted at every school site, dedicated to Dr. Williams. Students lent their gardening expertise to the effort as well. Many local donors made contributions to the memorials, including

the Bay Village Civic Association, which provided many of the plantings. Each tree is located on the front grounds of the school campus. Dr. Williams’ wife Rita, son John and brother Randy were also present for the ceremony, which included an invocation given by Dr. David Robinson, president of the Ministerial Alliance of N. Amityville. There was also a performance by the Amityville Memorial High School jazz band, a special tribute video organized by technology teacher Steve Carbo and many kind words said by Board

of Education President Lisa Johnson and Acting Superintendent of Schools Dr. Mary Kelly. “Dr. Williams was always a person who could bring people together: children, staff, teachers, administrators and community members,” said Ms. Johnson. “He loved the children of Amityville and did everything he could for them and the district.” Dr. Williams served as Amityville School District superintendent from 2007 until his passing in February 2014. 5K WALK/RUN - New York State Senate candidate Michael Venditto is pictured with participants at the Great South Bay 5K, which starts and finishes at Amityville Beach. The 5K Walk/Run through Amityville is held for the benefit of Citizens Campaign for the Environment and to help fund efforts to restore critical wildlife habitat and water quality in the Great South Bay.
