history and has been coordinating with Leslie Ciliotta, the other ninth grade social studies teacher, in planning virtual lessons. In prerecorded videos, students can see their teachers as well as information on the topic through a screen share. Student choice, a Columbia University Teacher’s College learning strategy, complements the common assignments that students complete. Mr. Zider cited one lesson on the Spanish Conquistadors, in which students could pick any aspect of this topic to research, become an expert on it and create a presentation. They could write a persuasive speech, prepare a Google Slide presentation, create a written timeline or record a Flipgrid video. One student wrote a speech from the vantage point of a Conquistador leader trying to recruit people to join his expedition. Eighth grade English Language Arts teacher Katie Rosario and ENL coteacher Christina Romeo use Google Classroom as the main learning platform for students, posting a slideshow twice a week that includes the learning objective, lesson and activity. Students can
use the message board or email to ask any questions. A recent poetry unit featured YouTube videos, Google Doc activities, Padlet links for class discussions and Kahoot games for review. For an upcoming short story unit, Ms. Rosario and Ms. Romeo will use Google Meet to stream live read alouds. The videos will also be recorded and posted so all of their students can access and review them at any time. Flipgrid is another tool for class interaction as students can record themselves and post their videos in response to a question or discussion topic. Virtual reading logs motivate students to continue their independent reading. “Using these various methods, we are hoping to create some normalcy and consistency for our classes,” Ms. Rosario said. The middle school is using virtual block scheduling for home instruction, so assignments such instruction in each subject area is done on assigned days. The school’s website also includes tutorial videos on the use of Google accounts.

Teachers at Edmund W. Miles Middle School in the Amityville Union Free School District are connecting with their students in new ways as distance learning will continue for the remainder of the 2020-21 school year. Students have been accessing all of their coursework using their provided Chromebooks. Ninth grade social studies teacher Jack Zider has been preparing his Advanced Placement Human Geography students for the May AP exam, which is being given online this year. The format of the test will be different from prior years, as students will have to answer two long-response questions in 45 minutes. Mr. Zider uses Google Classroom to post lessons and practice questions, and also video chats with his students through Google Meets twice a week. In addition to mastering the course content, he has been helping them get accustomed to the writing style expected for longresponse answers. “It’s important that the students know you are there and can see you,” he said. “Teaching is all about the connection and you’ve got to maintain it.” He also teaches global

The Charity of The Month for May is: Guardians of Rescue to get food for their pets. However, Paws of War will at times arrive at their homes with no warning, knock on their door and tell them that they have some items to drop off for them. “You always see that tear in their eye” says Robert. “That someone actually cares enough to come to their home and bring them something is very special.” A lot of these veterans suffered for many years, all of which now have lifelong disabilities due to their service to our country. Paws of War feels that at the very least they can bring them pet food to give them a helping hand during these tough times. Additionally, Paws of War has partnered with Cambridge Catering, who is providing hot cooked meals free of charge to our veterans. Hank, a Smithtown resident and veteran, was someone that Paws of War helped. When they arrived at his home, they noticed a his two very proud flags were destroyed. They handed off the pet food and trays of hot food that Cambridge Catering has provided, but they didn’t stop there. They then went to the hardware store and purchased everything to fix and replace his flags. Guardians of Rescue and Paws of War can both use your support so they can continue to help others. Guardians of Rescue is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. Their mission is to facilitate and foster programs and activities that further the unique benefits of interaction between people and animals. We are all aware of the toll that this pandemic is having on people, yet the impacts are being felt beyond humans. Animals are also being impacted in numerous ways by this situation. Guardians of Rescue has been dealing with the Covid Crisis in many different ways, such as helping people feed their pets and taking on the responsibility to care for homeless animals. They have even stepped out of their realm of helping animals to assist seniors during these trying times. They are overwhelmed by the amount of assistance needed and their phones are ringing non-stop. So many people have had their employment impacted by the virus, therefore donations have been down. This makes it difficult for them to continue feeding the animals, building doghouses, taking in new rescues and trying to cover all their expenses. “The pandemic has created a host of problem for the animals,” says Robert Misseri, President of this organization. “I hope that we can make it through this difficult time, so that we can continue to help the animals in need.” Robert is also the President of Paws of War, another non-profit right here on Long Island. This organization trains and places shelter dogs to serve and provide independence to our U.S. military veterans that suffer from the emotional effects of war. In turn, each veteran can experience the therapeutic and unconditional love only a companion animal can bring. Throughout this pandemic, they have been tending to the most at risk veterans. They find that their older senior veterans typically are very prideful and refuse to ask for any handouts. Many live alone and will still go out and put themselves at risk

While flowers certainly add beauty and a wonderful aroma to wedding ceremonies and receptions, there are other reasons behind their inclusion in such festivities. In ancient Rome, brides carried or wore flower garlands because the Romans believed flowers signified hope, fertility and new beginnings. In the Middle Ages, brides did not carry flowers, but rather strong-smelling spices and herbs. The rationale was that the herbs and spices would drive away bad luck and evil spirits. Flowers also served another practical purpose. In eras when bathing was a luxury, different flowers and herbs helped mask body odors. It wasn't until the Victorian era, when flowers were used to symbolize romantic love, that they became part of wedding ceremonies, according to Modern Weddings magazine.

To some parents it is worse than the discussion about the “birds and the bees” they had with their children 40 years ago. An open discussion with our children about your wishes after you pass away is a tremendous benefit to you and your children. A family discussion will avert the tragic situation that happened when Ted Williams died several months ago. My philosophy has always been, the funeral is more for the survivors than for the deceased. I recently spoke with a woman who did not want her children to be bothered when she died. She wanted to pay for a direct cremation without any services or viewing and she did not want to discuss it with her children. She wanted to make sure that she would be cremated before her children could get here from out of state. I suggested she first discuss this matter with her children. She said it was only her decision. I then asked her what she would do if, heaven forbid, one of her children died and they were cremated before she could say goodbye. She simply said she would never talk to her daughters or son-in-laws again. She then looked at me picked up the papers put them in her pocketbook and said I will be back after I discuss this matter with all my children. Some people do not ever wish to see the person after they die. They want to remember the person alive. Some people need the opportunity for closure and need to view their loved one before interment or cremation. Whatever your wishes are, I simply ask you discuss the matter with those who will suffer most after you are gone. Remember the funeral is more for them than it is for you. In America, John and Ann Betar, ages 104 and 100, respectively, have been married 83 years as of 2016. The couple eloped in 1932. They have been named one of America’s longest-married couples by the Worldwide Marriage Encounter.
